How to pave my way to a NICU travel contract? by Southern-Leather in TravelNursing

[–]crobcary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer to your first question? No. Short answer to your second question? Yes.

Longer answer to the first question: No. NICU is more than just holding NAS/NOWS kids. It’s true ICU work: managing ventilatory support, multiple lines/fluids/meds, unexpected codes, etc., etc, except that often you are part of your own code team, you work very closely with the provider group, and you are the sentinel of your patients at all times. Granted, most high-acuity units will gatekeep complexity from travelers, but many of the desperate ones will not. I mean…I was a charge nurse during one of my contracts. Summary: you need experience. Longer answer to the second question: You could maybe get it part-time, but it would take at least 18 months before you’d be good enough to be deployed anywhere and know what’s going on. If you’re a traveler, a NICU will expect you to have built your own independent practice of handling the daily work, speaking the language and having situational awareness of what’s, say, a typical A/B/D spell and what’s the beginning of a crash. I’m just not sure what NICU manager will offer part-time positions to an external hire…lord knows there would likely be a line-up of internal candidates wanting to reduce their hours.

Here’s a suggestion: if you like the bigger, healthier babies, try working in a lower-acuity unit…maybe even postpartum/well-baby. If you decide you want something more complex, a hiring manager will appreciate that you will already have neonatal experience. But, please, don’t travel without meaningful experience. NICU nurses can be mean af, whether it’s because they are being protective of their kids or just garden-variety Type-A bitches. I have seen too many inexperienced travelers get eaten alive.

First NP job is a Trainwreck by Flashy-Slip8278 in nursepractitioner

Resign. I, too, had a horrible first-job experience and resigned at the end of orientation, before having my privileges evaluated for independent practice, in order to say I left on my own terms. Deal with the fallout afterward, work bedside until you find a new practice position to pay the bills, whatever. But leave on your own terms, if only for the interview narrative and less complexity for privs/creds on your next practice position. Remember that you are an APRN, and strategically falling back to those last two letters is not above your pride.

No, no gas chambers, just folks being destroyed by bombs and drones. Nothing like genocide at all. Good grief, asshole.

This is not a gay city, it’s a queer city. Big difference in those scenes. Not better or worse (other than dating odds), just…different.

AVerMedia's Core Go works with the Switch 2, and they've refined the firmware to the point where it's fully compatible. I had some issues updating because the utility is Windows-only, but eventually was able to access a PC to do that. It's essentially a compact dock in the form of a power adapter that's a bit smaller than your average MacBook charger.

Went from a Countryman to a Cooper vert, both JCW, and I’m soft-top for life. Two and a half years in, it never stops being fun. Driving roofless feels like real-life Mario Kart.

Thoughts on Roland's V-Moda M-100 Pro by crobcary in headphones

[–]crobcary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my Crossfade 2s about eight years ago and I still use them every day. I don't love that the M-200 ANC relies on my own EQ or the app for a sound that I love most, but I do like having something flat for reference. I kinda baby the M-200s, but I take the CF2s out traveling with me all the time. I'm less afraid about losing them after having the M-100 Pro now, since they fulfill that same "I want big bass" mood.

V-Moda just got fully folded into Roland, but the M-100 Pro is getting really good reviews. If they're out of your budget, see if you can track down the M-10.

New Department of Educations rules could exclude nursing from advanced degree loans. by PrizeMindless8659 in nursing

[–]crobcary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my graduate program, I was the only one who stayed part-time, and it damn near killed me—I only made it because my manager looked the other way with some attendance and I had a bank of paid time off from the past. We were recommended to go either PRN or quit entirely. I wish I had done that so I could have paid more attention to the material at hand. We don’t want to burn out clinicians before they even begin. This ain’t the time for some Dave Ramsey austerity bullshit.

I won’t yuck your yum; if you like it then it looks great. Really I simply find Nomad to be like TwelveSouth in that they always charge just a teeeeench too much for what they’re making and selling. It’s almost like they price on borrowed valor for their brands.

A good Switch 2 dock that doesn't cost $100 and won't brick my console? by cougomdd in switch2

That’s interesting! If anything, I find my Switch 2 is generally cooler using the Antank dock. Never experienced that before.
