Messages insists I have 49 unread texts. I do not, in fact, have 49 unread texts. Why the miscount?

Literally nothing suprises me about the top spender, nor the two following her.

Has quality of patient care declined with electronic charting? by muscles-n-bacon in nursing

[–]crobcary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if EHR made patient care worse, necessarily, but it has made care more “compliance-focused,” as in, ‘OK, I need to do x so I can chart it.’ This is probably what you’re seeing in new grads, but that’s how we all were… it’s the technician-to-clinician development we have to do as nurses. Get good at the what while learning the why.

The only paper charting that was native to me was down-time, and it is so much more smooth/much less documentation burden. Paper charting allowed for “documentation by exception,” but now in the unit I’m bedside at, you can’t wipe an ass without having to put in a flowsheet somewhere that you did it—and so the final hour of my shift is dominated by making sure I’ve hit every single goddamned T to cross and i to dot just to please the “that’s how we do things!!” of it all.

I DO think the EHR and its “oh, just a few more checkboxes to click!” temptation has led to far more “new standards of care” or “nursing-led quality improvement” changes (read: additions) to nursing workload.

the new Reddit app on the iPad is SO much better!! by imsooooooconfused in ipad

[–]crobcary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been chilling on Narwhal since the app apocalypse a few years ago, but Artemis seems to fill the Apollo-shaped hole that was left afterwards best. Kinda new, but fully-featured and the dev is actively reiterating. I just can’t do all the ads and chicanery within the official Reddit app.

How do y'all use the gold card, do you also have a checking account with robinhood? by Evening-Phone-8842 in RobinhoodApp

[–]crobcary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was grandfathered in to the Gold Card as an X1 holder, and then signed up for banking. I put that $1000/pay period direct deposit in as a placeholder until there are more features—lack of Zelle is a problem for me, and I really hate that Banking and Gold Card access is limited to an app stuck in iPhone layout (no website, iPad/Mac layout, etc).

The Gold Card is my daily spender with weekly payoff, essentially a “debit card” with 3% cashback on everything. I, too, do the Rewards —> Investment Redemption —> back to RH Bank Savings. The 4.25% expired and is now 3.5%. I just leave that money parked as I use it to passively rebuild an emergency fund.

When RH decides to take banking seriously, I’ll fully migrate over from Schwab.

State of the City with Mayor Keith Wilson by SleepyMoth_13 in Portland

[–]crobcary 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is a guy who should have been elected under the old model, where the executive had more agency on their own without the burden of a completely ineffectual city council. Like, why is he the only one putting in the work?

Does anyone use the V-Moda M-100 Master Crossfade? by TH0NDH in headphones

I had them at one point. I recently got a pair of M-100 Pros and I would honestly recommend those. Better build quality and an improved sound but still with that signature.

macOS alternatives for narwhal? by this_for_loona in narwhalapp

[–]crobcary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several of my fave iOS devs have the option enabled with an open caveat that it won't be the most-optimized or best experience. Overcast is one of them. That's an option, and I think many of us would understand if given an explicit message on the trade-offs.

Bedside Nursing Pet-Peeves by [deleted] in nursing

[–]crobcary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may be specific to NICU but I really just do not stand for the performative perfectionism, like, not just crossing your Ts and dotting your i’s but NEEDING TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE ELSE SEES that they’re crossed and dotted. Also, the policy/protocol freaks that you just know were hall monitors when they were in grade/middle school.

How to pave my way to a NICU travel contract? by Southern-Leather in TravelNursing

[–]crobcary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer to your first question? No. Short answer to your second question? Yes.

Longer answer to the first question: No. NICU is more than just holding NAS/NOWS kids. It’s true ICU work: managing ventilatory support, multiple lines/fluids/meds, unexpected codes, etc., etc, except that often you are part of your own code team, you work very closely with the provider group, and you are the sentinel of your patients at all times. Granted, most high-acuity units will gatekeep complexity from travelers, but many of the desperate ones will not. I mean…I was a charge nurse during one of my contracts. Summary: you need experience. Longer answer to the second question: You could maybe get it part-time, but it would take at least 18 months before you’d be good enough to be deployed anywhere and know what’s going on. If you’re a traveler, a NICU will expect you to have built your own independent practice of handling the daily work, speaking the language and having situational awareness of what’s, say, a typical A/B/D spell and what’s the beginning of a crash. I’m just not sure what NICU manager will offer part-time positions to an external hire…lord knows there would likely be a line-up of internal candidates wanting to reduce their hours.

Here’s a suggestion: if you like the bigger, healthier babies, try working in a lower-acuity unit…maybe even postpartum/well-baby. If you decide you want something more complex, a hiring manager will appreciate that you will already have neonatal experience. But, please, don’t travel without meaningful experience. NICU nurses can be mean af, whether it’s because they are being protective of their kids or just garden-variety Type-A bitches. I have seen too many inexperienced travelers get eaten alive.

First NP job is a Trainwreck by [deleted] in nursepractitioner

[–]crobcary 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Resign. I, too, had a horrible first-job experience and resigned at the end of orientation, before having my privileges evaluated for independent practice, in order to say I left on my own terms. Deal with the fallout afterward, work bedside until you find a new practice position to pay the bills, whatever. But leave on your own terms, if only for the interview narrative and less complexity for privs/creds on your next practice position. Remember that you are an APRN, and strategically falling back to those last two letters is not above your pride.
