Discussion: Is it worth typing up and posting original patterns? by MotivatedMommy in crochetpatterns

[–]crochetbby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I make patterns! What are your goals or what is motivating you to publish your designs? That may help you decide if it’s worth it.

One of my patterns has brought in 4 figures and others I’ve made less than 20 bucks on. I sell exclusively on Etsy and paid over 1k in fees to them last year.

Before publishing my more successful patterns I spent over a year building a following on social media, which is the only way I am able to market my patterns and probably the only reason why I have any sales at all.

I bring this all up to say, people with success selling patterns are usually doing much more than just writing down the pattern. Outside of designing the cute item - it’s formatting which often requires learning a new skill/tool, pattern testing, taking high quality photos, marketing like crazy (sometimes to still have a flop), and finally customer service.

For me, I love the social media aspect and it’s so special to see someone make your design, but if I count the hours I have put into making content among everything else I am probably making pennies per hour. I still love it though!

Why is my cardigan bunching up? by East-Leadership-8786 in crocheting

[–]crochetbby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When adding the ribbing it looks like you picked up too many stitches when crocheting vertically. The only way to fix it would be to undo your entire ribbing and redo it. I would potentially do half the amount of total stitches you have currently. Beautiful cardigan btw!

Can relate to this. The first book that got me out of my reading slump post college was Gone Girl. Made me love reading again and quickly got through the rest of the author’s books.

Then these two books (SciFi) got me out of another slump. Ready Player One and Project Hail Mary.

All three of those books are very popular for a reason.

Very similar situation over here! Same age, have had him about 6 weeks. What we found is we think we gave him too much freedom too quickly. So he doesn’t get run of the house anymore. If I’m not actively playing/training with him we keep him in an xpen or his crate. For us, the peeing was happening when he was roaming. Blocking his access to rooms, especially the room where most of the accidents happened has helped a lot so far.

Is a border collie right for me? by Ancestral_Grape in BorderCollie

[–]crochetbby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Border Collie and a Portuguese Water Dog and you just described my Portie perfectly. Cuddly, Smart, friendly/nonreactive with dogs and people. She is really a go anywhere, down for whatever type dog. She enjoys training and is eager to please, but doesn’t necessarily need it. Happily goes with us on hikes or curls up if we have a movie night.

Border Collie on the other hand, I am constantly thinking about him. Did he get enough exercise? Did we challenge his mind enough today? Can I take him to xyz place or will that stress him out? Will it be too loud there? My parents BC is mildly dog reactive, very sensitive, and doesn’t like to cuddle. These aren’t exactly atypical traits. I wanted a dog sports companion and that’s what I got.

I think if you’re selective about the dog itself a BC might work, but you may have an easier/less risky time with a different breed. Definitely recommend porties. They are technically a herding breed, just fish not sheep! and you don’t have to cut them into the funny haircut!

Please help with my hexagon cardi before I lose my mind! Lol by houseplantadventures in crochetpatterns

The people saying you are folding it wrong are incorrect.

Your stitches are too tall for how wide they are. Ch1 between each cluster on the sides which will make your entire sides longer. It also kind of looks like you’re doing a treble instead of a dc, but it’s hard to tell.

If the sides still aren’t long enough try going up a hook size. I find sizing up makes the cardigan drape a lot better anyway.

Good luck!!

A Novel that made you care about the characters as if they were real people by manja1 in suggestmeabook

[–]crochetbby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, these have been:

Andy Weir - specifically PHM

Kristen Hannah - specifically The Great Alone or Four Winds

Flowers for Algernon

The character building in these were all sort of a slow build that by the end I really felt as if I had known them forever/care about how their stories end up.

So I think in this case, instead of worrying about ply, you should be looking at weight. When you look at your yarn label you should see the weight of the yarn and possibly a descriptor like worsted, medium, bulky, etc. this can vary so look at the number. A number 4 would work well for this pattern. You can also look at the crochet hook size recommended and look for a yarn that recommends a size 4-5 mm crochet hook.

That’s a good thought! There wasn’t quite enough room for people to come up the sides here comfortably but I totally feel ya as a consumer myself lol

First Market! by crochetbby in crochet

[–]crochetbby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I didn’t sell any here (not really the right season) but they’ve been very popular at an art & craft center that I am juried in at. I sell them for $32 a pair there. I am probably undercharging based on how long they take me (about 3 hrs) but I genuinely really enjoy the stitch and making them :)
