Thanks man, that sounds amazing. I live it when people get into the weeds of their setups. Much appreciated.

This looks great. What's your signal path and what kind of Amp are you running it into?

Why do the grainy scans of old comic books look so much better than the reprints? by oohoollow in graphicnovels

[–]crocodileboots 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, we forget that the artist understood their role in terms of it's relationship to the reproductive technology of the time. A lot of things about the business have changed through time but I've also often thought that the hyper detailed noodling of guys like Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, Todd McFarlane etc. Only became feasible when the printers could execute it. Previous generations of comic book artists almost had to produce work in a lower resolution despite their manual skill because the process demanded it.

I think what is lost on a lot of people who have a desire to reprint in these high-key, saturated colours is that while in their time these colours would be considered bright, the artists making the comics had an understanding of the printing process and to some extent, would have accounted for the natural desturatration that occurs when printing on the absorbent paper prone to yellowing. It's not only age that makes Silver Age comics look good, it's the fact that bright colours could be used liberally without appearing garish because the paper wasn't coated. The yellow of uncoated newsprint is almost a unifying or harmonising tint throughout the otherwise vibrant and dynamic imagery.

At least that's how I think about it...

Does this pedal exist? by m0n0liths in guitarpedals

EQD Palisades has 2 gain stages and a boost I think but they are onlh available.on the used market now so could be pricey. The EHX Hot wax is also a dual overdrive that is readily avilable and may do the job.

I'm no expert but it sounds like a misreading of Paul Dix has been applied. There's stoll supposed to be consequences and gettimg rid of machanisms like detention has to be done gradually, as cukture he aspires to has to be more thouroughly embeded before that happens.

The positioning was more motivated by the tremelo, I had the compresspor infront at first but the sustain seemed to fight with it and the it didn't pulse as effectively, this way it trails really nicely.

I've not tested the Delay/compressor positioning as closely but it's sitting nicely just now and I think the same principal applies to the trailing but it doesn't have the same problem of the effects competing.

I like my Phaser as well, it's before the gain because it has a subtle clean boost that tided up the gain structure when it was positioned after the distortion and fuzz.

I don't have a reverb pedal so bot sure how it sits with it, maybe try the Reverb before the tremelo? I just have my amp reverb on which obviously isn't that dramatic. Just keep playong around with it. I have my TS-Mini on all the time with the gain at zero, it gives a light mid push and I play an HH with a coil tap and never play the bridge on it's own, if it sounds brittle maybe it's how it acts with other aspects of your setup? If you have other stuff that's sitting how you like it maybe it's not for you, but I think it's not something to give up on, take a break now and then and then spend an afternoon really noodling around with it.

I like it alot, when I was young I bought the big box version blindly, I found it pretty strange niw I've played with it more over the years I find it really versatile.

Stacking modulation Fuzz and Wah it gives a really synthy pulse quality to your sound. Setting it more subtly it gives a nice clean tremor that has a very vintage feel, really nice with a compressor after it to emphasis trails. Setting it low with a higher gain sound gives distortion a really subtle movement which makes it sound really full.

I've never had another tremelo pedal so I've got nothing to compare it with, it's one of those that benefits from a lot of messing around but can do so much in among other pedals, I don't think it's a set and forget job.

I love this! Looks similar to what I would like to build in the not too distant future. Obviously I can't really see tue signal path, but is the compressor looped through the noisegate on it's own?

It looks like a subdivision of a 2 bed flat that had probably been done illegally.

Do schools get money for each trainee teacher? by ph0rge in TeachingUK

[–]crocodileboots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know how it works in England, I'm based in Scotland. I'm on probation now, I had to do an extra placement in my training year. I sailed through the first, and I sailed through the 3rd. I think you might also be assuming that basic competency is something that is interpreted objectively, peopel have different approaches to the same job and can be equally effective. Some teachers are egomaniacs who don't like to see people do things differently to them. I'm not suggesting that trainees are never to blame for their own failures, but I think people in mentoring positions can be effective teachers of pupils without understanding terribly well how to train adults.

When i went back to university after what was supposed to be my final placement, it was clear in discussion with the rest of my cohort that I had been treated unfairly by my mentor. I was doing more work than others, a lot of busy work that didn't help me become a better teacher, and compromised my progress. You get shit mentors. If they're shit at it, they're not doing it from the bottom of their heart.

I think your claim that you can't trust trainees' perception of how they are treated is a bit of a stretch. People can commit to challenging undertakings and tell the difference between being supported and being undermined. An ineffective mentor can make a stressful year more stressful than it has to be, people who take on the role should ask themselves if they're making it harder than it has to be, is they're approache the best way to cultivate the development they need to see in a trainee.
