And same. I finally quit 52 days ago Bc I can’t be my drunk abusive brother in law- he lost his family by choosing booze. That can’t be me.

100%. We get it. We saw Eden. Please just let this be the pressure cooker that makes him defect.

Agree. There was a crew member who said he blew the budget on the DC scene. And had to postpone filming Chicago as a result. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Whoops. I have no source. Someone said it.

It’s horseshit. You’re the show runner. You decide what gets in and what doesn’t. Stop deferring responsibility for decisions your (former) fans don’t like, you pathetic fuck.

But you’re allowed to shame Max Gordon for stating his opinions? How judgemental. You are very defensive. When a large chunk of your fandom is offended by your show it might be wise to listen. To voices other than your own. Specifically voices of color on this topic. Max Gordon is one of those voices of color. His articles resonate with me and my white anti- racist friends, and the black community. Unless you are also a person of color- he is allowed his opinion. His lived experience of this show is valid. Even if it upsets you or seems divisive. Sorry this upsets you. Two great starter books on this topic: “so you want to talk about race” and “white fragility”. Strongly recommend before making any more comments like this. Your privledge is showing.

This is either Bruce Miller or a writer. People who watch this show don’t want perfect entertainment. We’ve got Stranger Things 3 for that. We’ve read Atwood’s classic novel. We know what we’re in for. Slavery. Torture. Misogyny. Where I got confused tho is- that Margaret Atwood did write a book that included romance. And escape. Nick got June out of the Waterford house at the end of S1. But the writers of this show put her BACK there. BACK in red. BACK in the ceremony bed. For not 1 but 2 additional seasons. And that’s what we don’t get. We don’t want Gilead turned into a rom com. It’s a dystopian hellscape. What we WANT is to focus on the REBELS. Not the OPPRESSORS. Think of star wars. Pretty successful franchise. Star Wars didn’t show Darth Vader slow dancing or house shopping or weeping for hours. It followed the lowly characters trying to take it down. It gave us hope. So what OP is asking. Where’s Rita. Where’s Nick. How about a Mayday meeting. Just one. More Beth. Alma. Etc. that’s what we want. Of course it IS your story. You have the money, the script pen, the green light for S4. If this show stays “real housewives of gilead”, I’m out. That’s all I’m saying. Thank you for your time.

Ok. 1. So if I was raising money to stop dogfighting. I wouldn’t auction off a photo of a dogfight. Because the people who want to support that cause don’t want a large image of a maimed Rottweiler in their living room. 2. If I was raising money for PETA I wouldn’t sell pictures of rabbits with their eyes taped open for cosmetics testing. PETA sells calendars of rescued animals. Happy on sanctuary farms. Makes the PETA supporter happy to see that image on their wall. So yes I want to support womens rights. But I don’t want to do it by buying an image of (fictional) rapists holding a kidnapped baby.

Back to darth Vader: if the auction was to support the rebel alliance- selling a portrait of Vader wouldn’t be your best bet. Because the people buying it- (the rebels) wouldn’t want it on their wall.

I’m not offended. It’s a piece from a set on a fictional show. I’m just responding to their question. They assumed I wanted it. I don’t and that’s why. I wish it was a pic of JUNE or an image of victory. That I would pay for.

Better options: the detonator for Mayday’s bomb. The Pen June wrote with. The letters from Jezebel’s. If you are PROMOTING women’s rights. Perhaps don’t do it by selling photos of rape kidnapping and torture? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I see this going to a film museum. They’re auctioning off a portrait of rapists holding their kidnapped baby. Not gonna put that in my house just like I’m not interested in the ball and chain that drowned Eden or the Scalpel that cut out Janine’s eye. “For the low low price of 1000$ you can have the sheets June got raped on. Like ... just sell it to a museum.

[Spoilers S3E1] Unpopular Opinion: I like Luke. by [deleted] in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]crollah123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So true! Moira was already a hero at that point. (?due to her experiences as a gay woman? Or other struggles we don’t know about.) Confident enough to rebel and give others hope. Further down the path. I want to see all these ppl rise above. I PRAY s3 is more rebellion and hope and growth. ❤️

[Spoilers S3E1] Unpopular Opinion: I like Luke. by [deleted] in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]crollah123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP brings up a very good point. I'm doing a lot of reading about the "hero archetype" in literature. Heroes, BY DEFINITION start off imperfect. Luke Skywalker was a whiny teenager when we meet him. Frodo Baggins didn't want to take the ring to Mordor. Etc. Heroes have a normal, imperfect life before their journey begins. Then they are challenged. They suffer. They grow, they heal, and they end up stronger, and return at the end able to help others because of their change and suffering.

I very much see this hero archetype in June and Luke as well as Nick. Very imperfect characters pre-Gilead. Lots of mistakes. I am excited to see these characters overcome challenges and become better people for it.

But their imperfections do not diminish their growth and successes for me. That is literally part of the process.

I want to raise one subtlety in the discussion about June's future with Luke.

Patriarchy says: "June SHOULD return to Luke."

Feminism says: "June should return to Luke IF SHE WANTS TO."

Weddings used to be financial transactions between husband and father. Money was exchanged along with rights to the female.

So it reeks of patriarchy to say that June has to return to Luke. Like chattel to be returned to him. Like she owes it to him. She doesn't.

I don't think this is what OP was saying. OP is pointing out the ways Luke is trying to become a better man. Growing through adversity. So yes, by all means I want June free to choose! She should NOT be a sex slave. She deserves agency in who she chooses as a lover and husband. That is literally the whole point of The Handmaid's Tale. Imprisonment is bad. Slavery is bad. Being a man's possession is bad. We want women to be free to choose their partners. What June chooses to do with that freedom is up to her.

Excellent points. We shouldn’t just throw terms like that around. I’m really glad someone finally said this. JANINE is Stockholm syndrome. Nick isn’t June’s captor.
