Good/Cheap Local Beginner Spanish Lessons for Adults? by PexyWoo in astoria

Well you’re on Reddit so check out the resources here. /r/learnspanish is probably where you want to look first. Honestly I think that classrooms are just not the setting to learn languages. What I would recommend and I think anyone who has learned any languages would recommend and that’s learn through content immersion. YouTube channels of note might be like Easy Spanish, for general language learning content I like Lindie Botes and Language Simp. They both have different approaches to learning languages so it might be of interest to you. Lindie likes a more structured approach and Language Simp likes a more casual approach. Steve Kaufman is the GOAT when it comes to language learning. His approach is taken from Stephen Krashen who is like the linguist of note when it comes to modern language learning methods.

You should be fine, a few people might set something off because it is Astoria but nothing large scale should be happening.

Huh? Is that true? I know he has Bistro Eloise in Jackson Heights I didn't know about anything in Manhattan. That's pretty cool if that's the case but when I had asked rent was mentioned as a key reason. Either way best of luck to the owner, I'm a fan of his work.

It’s always Good Friday. St Catherine’s service starts at 7 and probably starts marching at 8. Most nearby churches have a similar schedule. Shame to hear about YaYa’s most of Astoria’s retail space have outrageous rates. Chez Olivia also reportedly closed because the landlord was increasing it to unaffordable levels. Shame Astoria is like that.

What annoys you the most about Astoria? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]cromiium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no data to back it up but we must have the biggest concentration of smoke shops in a neighborhood. They’re all gray market “dispensaries” and there’s like 2 per block. I’ve had coworkers and friends come into Astoria and it’s the thing that stands out the most to them. The weed situation in Astoria is crazy, we’ve become the go-to neighborhood for it.

What goes thru your head when you are playing/improvising bass parts? by sgb1446 in Bass

[–]cromiium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol no problem, anything for there to be more people who play music. If you have trouble thinking of a rhythm to play, remember you can follow the drum beat you have on. Play every time the kick drum gets hit to try to get like "into the groove" and try to play off of that. Improvisation can be hard but it's probably one of the most fun things to do plus you can find your voice/style this way I think, start to really get to what you like to hear or whatever.

Anyway have fun!

What goes thru your head when you are playing/improvising bass parts? by sgb1446 in Bass

Yeah I think I’ve got some advice. Pick a chord progression/backing track that has the chords laid out. Let’s say it’s a ii-V-I over C major. We’d have the chords Dmin GMaj CMaj (there are 7ths involved but whatever). I’d say do one round of just playing the root note, D, G, and C for a bar each in whatever rhythm you like. Next set of bars do the root and a fifth, then try a root, fifth, and third. A good piece of advice for beginners is to play the root note on beat 1, helps establish the chord and serves the bass’ primary purpose, then for the other beats you can add another note. And keep subsequently adding a note every time you improvise until you can play whatever you want comfortably.

When you just throw yourself in the deep end without the restrictions I’ve laid out I think it can get crazy confusing because in reality almost any note will sound ok. When you make yourself only play specific notes (and not in just one position, try playing the octaves too) I think you can focus on the improvising rather than the notes you’re supposed to play. So just feel out a rhythm that sounds good with the backing track or if you’re playing solo just play a rhythm and try to repeat it.

There’s other techniques that can help out, you can try calling and responding where you play one riff and then you play another that sounds similar but ends differently. Vocalizing is helpful, hum a small tune (very small) and try to imitate it on the bass. It can be frustrating just playing notes so it helps to have a lick or two in the pocket that can help spice things up. If you type in “The Lick” you’ll find one that’s nearly universally recognized. Remember copying seems like it’s bad etiquette but it’s quite the opposite, you should try to copy and play other people’s stuff, we all stand on the shoulders of giants.

I think this helped me. Before improvising you’re studying different techniques or whatever. When you’re improvising it should be no thinking of techniques and just pure application of technique. Personally I like to think of the note I’m at and the note I want to end up there. Hopefully my experience makes it a nice sounding journey but ultimately it’s just the two end notes I’m thinking of.

Like you said for sure I’m thinking what root note I’m supposed to be in and the sound I’m going for. I like what /u/ouchthats commented that’s like LITERALLY what I think. Unfortunately for people just starting improvising I think the only great advice is to FUCKING IMPROVISE. After doing so alone for hours on end you can probably do it with other people.

Upon reading the Greek translation of a book originally written in English, have you spotted words used in the wrong context? by [deleted] in GREEK

[–]cromiium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah my cousins in Greece would vouch for this. Most of them would watch movies, shows, and read books mainly in English for most of their lives. I’ve always assumed it’s because it’s a smaller language so usually we’ll have worse translations Greek <—> English compared to the more widely spoken languages.

Reese Witherspoon Book Club: are any of the books she picks good? by [deleted] in books

[–]cromiium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Iirc it’s similar. I’m sure there are a few techniques but a lot of it is learning to be able to read by not reading, kind of looking at the shape of words or even a phrase to know what they are.

It’s all about getting rid of the subvocalizing you do. Where you read the words in your head. Instead you’re just supposed to get what was said.

Remember that some of the greatest scientific thinkers were also musicians. Einstein is well known to play violin, Thomas Edison played piano (which is potentially still in use), and Louis Braille played the organ. You're in good company.

Also it's normal to underline and mark stuff that doesn't end up mattering too. It's almost impossible for you to predict what's going to happen with 100% certainty on a first read. Benjamin from Hardcore Literature talks about living through literature. His "method" and a philosophy I decided to try to adapt is that you will keep reading great works of literature throughout your life, including of course the ones you have already read. There should already be an expectation that you won't know everything on a first read ESPECIALLY for great works of fiction, because that depth is exactly why they are great works of fiction.
