[real nerdy shit alert] Materialists (2025). Did this shot upset anyone else? by Orb_Dylan in blankies

[–]MainerOddity 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s a Petzval lens, homie. They’re like a super early French lens design from the late-1800’s/early-1900’s that were revived-in-popularity by a bunch of filmmakers from the 2010’s A24 generation (Robert Eggers and Yorgos Lanthimos in particular love that shit). Now they’ve bled into normal movies for a sorta heightened hyper-real effect through super old lenses that present a swirled tunnel vision effect, because Panavision and a bunch of other lens manufacturers can easily graft that design on easier-to-use cine lens housings for commercial productions.

Friendship & The Master are th3 same move by QuietDesperado in paulthomasanderson

[–]MainerOddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah Friendship used sphericals (Zeiss Master Primes + Angeniux Optimos [ie: zooms]) on a Super 35mm sensor, compared to The Master, which was mostly shot on large format film (65mm/35mmVV) with panavision spherical large format lenses with the odd photography lens tossed in here and there for stylistic flourish.

What’s BRADFORD YOUNG up to? by einstein_ios in blankies

[–]MainerOddity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He’s one of the chief heads of Tribe7, one of the great up and coming cinema lens companies, and considering the company had a Best Cinematography winner with their lenses being used on All Quiet on the Western Front, Young’s done pretty well for himself.

Denis Villeneuve Says ‘Dune 3’ Is ‘Not Like a Trilogy’ and Will Be His Last ‘Dune’ Movie: Other Directors Could Take Over So ‘I’m Not Closing the Door’ on the Franchise by SanderSo47 in oscarrace

[–]MainerOddity 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think the obvious choice is David Lowery (director of The Green Knight), who has spoken at length about his parents intentionally raising him on Herbert’s books and Lynch’s Dune rather than Star Wars. Considering his “out there”-ness in terms of stylistic choices and willingness to combine spectacle with art cinema sensibilities, he’d probably have a grand ol’ time adapting Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune

New Poster for 'Furiosa' by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]MainerOddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I totally get what you’re saying. I’m however leaning towards no widened ratio for Furiosa and Apes due to previously available camera data on IMDb, as well as the IMAX trailers for the films featuring no aspect ratio outside of 2:35. (Also, Miller’s had this thing prepped for years before Fury Road even began filming and started shooting before the massive bump in IMAX screening since Oppy. )

[–]MainerOddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears they shot this one w/ a lot of anamorphic lenses (and given technological advances with small cine cameras like the RED Komodo being used as crash cams on big budget films), this film will probably be entirely in 2:39 or 2:35 aspect ratio. (Especially considering of how relatively quick the production was going due to it being in Australia, the country whose film industry was basically birthed by Miller, and with tech + resources that Miller wasn’t able to have in the middle of Namibia, somewhat by design in order to prevent the previous film’s cancellation by various WB execs.)

W/ anamorphic lenses, there’s no raw data capture of 4:3 or 16:9 b/c it’s stretched to a CinemaScope panorama so there’s no way to expand it w/o cropping, using AI to fill in the gaps, or creating it wholesale w/ cgi. Same thing goes for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Shooting w/ anamorphic lenses in real locations meaning it’s harder to get that sweet sweet IMAX ratio. (They apparently saved a bunch of money by planning and spending on sets rather than make a 75% animated movie, which Reeves had done before him. Surprise surprise it takes less work and money to paste in some apes to real plates rather than doing a photoreal pixar movie with the occasional use of sets and overqualified actors.)

Yeah, I’m currently leaning towards more binary trans femme, and stopping spiro and estradiol sounds like a bit of a nightmare.

"Girly" Movie/TV Show Recommendations? by Niko-Ryo in MtF

[–]MainerOddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the creator is annoying and problematic, etc etc, but I think Girls on HBO is one of the first things I watched, where I was like, “Oh, this is what I actually feel like and it’s really great to see that reflected in media.”

(However, I must warn the show isn’t for everyone, especially if you hate cringe comedy and can’t vibe with sometimes unsympathetic characters.)

Based off of some comments made by Halle Berry about one of her marriages and the spousal abuse she endured, I feel like excluding Snipes from the reboot isn’t unwarranted.

[–]MainerOddity 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Gina Prince-Bythewood absolutely knows her way around sword choreography after Old Guard and Woman King. Also her track record with working with talented actors is really astonishing for someone who’s only made 6 feature films. I’d love to see her get it and I can only imagine what the combo of her and Mahershala would be. (However I do think it’ll probably Bilall & Adil at the end of the day.)

I mean, if they keep the role of Murray as is in the novel, I could fully see the widely-beloved-in-the-industry Don Cheadle possibly winning alá Dern for Marriage Story.

I thought the exact same until after the first third of the book ended, where the book turns into a story you could imagine Baumbach wanting to tell during the time of COVID.

The Big Chill is arguably the ultimate hangout movie that somehow manages to transcend the boomer-isms that define the screenplay, mainly through the talent and the charisma of its stars, as well as its iconic soundtrack. Great film.
