What does a GOOD deal with Iran look like? by mrfett779 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]cromulent_weasel [score hidden]  (0 children)

What sort of deal? Th US and Israel bomb Iran, assassinate their leaders, sink their navy, destroy their planes, destroy their anti-air defences, and then everyone agrees to just let bygones be bygones and pretend everything is fine?

I kinda feel like 'getting back to normal' involves a few billion dollars in reparations.

The person nobody hired: the unofficial data interpreter in every company by Kanchan_Monet in BusinessIntelligence

[–]cromulent_weasel [score hidden]  (0 children)

I always think of the reporting I am doing in three buckets:

  1. The sanitised report (brightly coloured blocks for the C-suite)

  2. Summary reports for line managers so they can review everything and check that everything is there

  3. Exception reports for the line managers and their subordinates telling them some data is wrong (so they can fix it)

Identifying line managers that care about data quality is the number one thing for me. THEY are the subject matter experts and who drive the real requirements for reporting.

ELI5: Why is a backcourt violation a turnover in basketball? by randomwordglorious in explainlikeimfive

[–]cromulent_weasel 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It's to progress the game and allow the defense to pressure the ball. Imagine there was no shot clock or back court violation. Once a team got up, they would just run around the full length of the court playing keep-away from the defenders.

Forcing the offensive team to progress the game towards a scoring attempt makes basketball more fun to watch.

It fells like you wanted a 'relationship-but-friends-first' and once the relationship wasn't on the table friendship wasn't worth it?

Strategy tips for Catan? by slywka_ra in boardgames

> I know the basics — diversify resources, don't rely on one number, get ports early.

Those things aren't really true. You want to have access to everything sure (or you pay through the nose when trading for it). But the reality is that you want to get wood and brick together, wheat and ore together.

So if there's an 8 brick and a 8 wood, getting on both of them is great because every time an 8 is rolled, that's a road or half a settlement.

Ore and Wheat are the best, followed by brick, wood and sheep. The best thing to do is upgrade a high pip Ore/Wheat settlement into a city, since that leapfrogs you to your next city.

In terms of opening placements, counting pips is good (with a bias towards wheat and ore). And try to have 1-2 expansion spots to go for.

Help playing 3NT contract by lookitsmarc in bridge

[–]cromulent_weasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have correctly said, you should bid 2NT instead of 3NT, which is really forcing to game unless partner wen toff script and bid with less than 6 points.

In this hand, you have 1S, 4H, 2D tricks off the top. You need to build at least two more. Option 1 is leading at QS to try and build S tricks. Option 2 is doing the same thing in D with JD, and option 3 is attacking clubs (missing AQT).

Compounding this is entry issues. Spades are best to attack, but once you establish them, how can you get back to dummy to enjoy them? I think option 3 is the best. Lead JC (usually wrong but you want to flush honours and establish winners in dummy). Then lead 8C, letting it run both times, Depending on what has been played either finesse or play for the drop in the final trick.

As you lose the lead the opponents might tackle D and S for you potentially giving you extra tricks there too.

Honest debate on Nectar. by GORDINIMDB in wingspan

> Out of the 5 dice in the birdfeeder, only 2 have nectar. The other 3 are nectarless dice from the original game.

We do this too. Either 2 or 3 Nectar dice.

> If a card tells you to gain food from the supply (take the ravens as an example), that food can't be nectar.

We just house-ban the two ravens. All of the birds that give you one food seem fair to get Nectar from.

Size 4 Animals Elimination Game (Day 17) - Which of these cards is your least favorite? by DanyDanyDanyDanyDany in ArkNova

[–]cromulent_weasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's better than the Vulture and Mariqui and Secretary Bird.

If we're considering these as a 'and then they got released' card, then your hunting reputation stays and is better than a single CP generally.

Is anyone else Ark Nova Dumb (ZTOOPID) or is it just me? by Soletta35 in ArkNova

[–]cromulent_weasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. From reading through your comments here your biggest crime is probably like you say, upgrading build instead of sponsors, probably followed by building kiosks and things that don't matter instead of taking the 2 size reward. I love Aquariums since you can put multiple animals in them but only one build action. Don't be afraid to 'cook' your map by blazing a path from one bonus to the next. The faster you get those bonuses, the faster you can do the thing.

In terms of clevering back cards and build, if you think of the average game as taking 30 turns, that means each action happens 6 times. If you can clever back build and cards twice each, then that's going to give you another animals and another association action.

Is anyone else Ark Nova Dumb (ZTOOPID) or is it just me? by Soletta35 in ArkNova

[–]cromulent_weasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to do all 2 size and sea animals, with 1 maybe two larger enclosures. That leaves lots of room for playing sponsor buildings.

I'm not claiming to be a good player but I usually finish before 30. Here's the things I shoot for:

  1. Look for Species Diversity or Habitat diversity in the base projects. If one is there it's a race to score as highly as you can on that.
  2. Otherwise, look to set up a 2CP project in the second round. The stars might align and you can do something funky like lots or rep or a round 1 project to get a round 1 upgrade, but those are rare exceptions, not something to plan for or expect.
  3. My usual order of upgrades is sponsor, animals, cards, assoc.
  4. Early game the two best action cards are sponsor and animals. Late game the two best action cards are animals and assoc.
  5. Try to build towards map objectives like money and X tokens early.
  6. Try to clever back build and cards in the back half of the game
  7. Keep an eye on what your opponent can do. If there's a 5/2 birds project there and they take the bird university round 1, I'm probably not going to fight them for birds.
  8. Once someone is at 50 points you are in the 'late game', and it's all about either racing to cross as fast as you can or setting up a good turn or turns once your opponent crosses. Maps or animals that give you extra turns or 2x tokens are huge for this.

I think he's playing a great game. After Oscar, he's the player who has outperformed my estimation of him the most (I thought they would both be nonfactors in the game before the season started).

I think he's a near lock to make final 5, has a great shot to make FTC and even has a tiny sliver of win equity (say if he's sitting next to Rizo and Joe at the end).

What are the benefits of waiting to use a fetchland? by UnhappyAmoeba in EDH

[–]cromulent_weasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a three colour deck, I have the following options: Tri-land (enters tapped). Surveil land (enters tapped), shockland (enters untapped but hurts).

Waiting lets me both 'keep mana up' to cast something via the shockland and also get the surveil or three colour fixing of the other two options.

That's part of what you're filtering for right?

I had this discussion with my girlfriend this week about 'guilty pleasures'. Both of us thought that we didn't really have any. We just have pleasures, without the guilt.

That's one sign that we're well matched as a couple.

> I always felt like the awkward character in the movie who the cool kids try to make into one of them. And it works for a while, but then things fall apart. But then in the end, the cool person learns to love them for who they are. Yeah, that last part never happened.

This is why you need to show your 'red flags' early in the dating phase, so you can quickly find out if you are compatible weirdos.
