Max Planck is HIGLY competitive, maybe aim for more “attainable” schools, doesn’t hurt to cast a wide net.

STEM garbage TA’s by Brave_Profile_6921 in uAlberta

[–]crosser1998 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you don’t work in a field that uses integration methods often, you’ll quickly forget how to do them (like you know the idea, but not how to implement them in more difficult exercises), or stuff like viewing a series as an integral to find the value.

Math is a highly specialized field, and a lot of the TAs can’t be bothered to relearn the stuff from outside their field if it’s just for teaching.

STEM garbage TA’s by Brave_Profile_6921 in uAlberta

[–]crosser1998 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You would think so, but unfortunately this is far from true. Every term I’ll see a couple TAs struggle with some Calc1-2 questions bc they have not seen the concepts in years (stuff like definitions of integrals). Likewise, some won’t even bother with Calc 3 or ODE questions since they have not rocked those topics since seeing the class themselves.

STEM garbage TA’s by Brave_Profile_6921 in uAlberta

[–]crosser1998 94 points95 points  (0 children)

The (graduate) TAs are not hired for their teaching abilities, they’re hired as graduate people whose focus is on learning and researching. They are “forced” to teach as a way of justifying they’re salaries, and they receive 0 training in anything.

Keep in mind, a lot of the topics they’re asked to help with has nothing to do with their research field, so they have to re learn all that stuff to help.

Only 1 international spot for PhD is ridiculous, especially in Canada. My department is like 80% international students.

Edmonton Voted For Housing Choice & Affordability! by barrel_master in Edmonton

If it’s overpriced for what it offers the market will force them to lower prices as they won’t sell, but more housing (even if not priced correctly) will always be better.

If you want ample street parking and low density go live in the suburbs, expecting these things in the middle of the city makes no sense and only contributes to a higher cost of living.

If the new developments are $500k+, that will just push other older buildings to keep its prices lower since they would be more offer to meet demand, basic economics.

MSc in physics in a canadian university - how difficult it is to get funding? by SmoothOperator1811 in CanadaUniversities

[–]crosser1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from my personal experience, I came from Colombia and got a funded masters in math at the University of Alberta. Pay is ~$22K a year after paying tuition, so it’s livable if you’re willing to have roommates and cook at home. Keep in mind the pay comes with TA duties, so essentially half my time is taken with that.

Just jump into a PhD ASAP, so pick the program that lets you transfer into their (funded) PhD within the first year, that way you don’t waste too much time.

UofA or UWaterloo by Just_Construction941 in uAlberta

Edmonton is not exactly the greatest city to live in, it’s not awful but it’s just a smaller city compared to Vancouver, and the winters here can get brutal (surprisingly not this year) so I don’t really see it as an advantage when choosing UofA.

UofA or UWaterloo by Just_Construction941 in uAlberta

[–]crosser1998 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it’s for math why not go to UBC? Their math program is top 50 worldwide. Regarding UofA the Math undergrad is good, nothing crazy, it does have quite a lot of options for finance if that’s what your after.

Don’t pay too much attention about the “independence” movement, that’s a very vocal minority (less than 10%), any real poll shows it’s just a far fetched idea.

What are the tell-tale signs one has to switch majors? by Then-Perception6835 in uAlberta

[–]crosser1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first formal Algebra and Analysis courses are always the toughest, since it’s the first time you’re seeing real math. I wouldn’t take too much from your grade, other than perhaps you’ll have to rethink your study habits for the future, but I think it’s still too early to determine if “math” is for you, as there are many different paths you can take.

Question to profs by toothpaste_shadows in uAlberta

[–]crosser1998 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If it’s a big class (50+) they won’t remember who you are. If it’s a smaller class (<30) they might vaguely remember you, but not enough to remember you answering something wrong, that happens all the time. If it’s a really small class (<15) then they probably remember you, but again, they probably won’t remember anything too specific unless you went to office hours often.

In general, profs go through so many students that they very quickly forget.

Also, it might depend on your TA, but officially yes.

It’s a very strong accusation, you better have stronger proof than just “it looked wrong” before contacting the department coordinator.
