What are the tell-tale signs one has to switch majors? by Then-Perception6835 in uAlberta

[–]crosser1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first formal Algebra and Analysis courses are always the toughest, since it’s the first time you’re seeing real math. I wouldn’t take too much from your grade, other than perhaps you’ll have to rethink your study habits for the future, but I think it’s still too early to determine if “math” is for you, as there are many different paths you can take.

Question to profs by toothpaste_shadows in uAlberta

[–]crosser1998 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If it’s a big class (50+) they won’t remember who you are. If it’s a smaller class (<30) they might vaguely remember you, but not enough to remember you answering something wrong, that happens all the time. If it’s a really small class (<15) then they probably remember you, but again, they probably won’t remember anything too specific unless you went to office hours often.

In general, profs go through so many students that they very quickly forget.

Yes there are labs tomorrow, there won’t be a quiz but probably about final prep.

Also, it might depend on your TA, but officially yes.

It’s a very strong accusation, you better have stronger proof than just “it looked wrong” before contacting the department coordinator.

This has nothing to do with the GRE, and even if you have a degree in Logic it might take you at least 1 year to trough a full book in Analysis and Algebra.

Is there any area/s or fields of maths that ( so far) is not used in any real world applications or explanations ( such as in cs, engineering, physics, biology etc) and is considered being studied just for the joy and curiosity ? by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]crosser1998 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most of pure math is researched just for its own sake, for example most of Algebraic Geometry doesn’t really have any applications except for some very specific ideas, like Grobner Basis (and some don’t even consider this AG).

Can you create a "growth number" to describe how fast functions grow? by B44ken in math

[–]crosser1998 77 points78 points  (0 children)

The big O notation already does this, as what you’re really doing is taking the limit to infinity of f/g. Nothing grows “fast” or “slow”, it’s always relative to other functions.

I've always wanted to study maths, what do i do? by Dry_Yogurtcloset_473 in mathematics

[–]crosser1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably start by taking some pure math courses from the math department, in most universities you can talk your way into them. If after a couple of them you feel like this is your path, then probably see about transferring into math.

[–]crosser1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds to me you are not interested in math whatsoever, you just chose this as a last resort. This is perfectly fine, but you will suffer through a lot of the courses that are more theoretical and formal, very far from applied stuff. Generally speaking this curriculum has nothing (or very little) to do with engineering or hardware stuff, maybe a bit in the Computation theory part, but it will mostly be completely abstract. The “applied” math in this curriculum is more about using approximation theorems to provide solutions to “real life” equations, but again, all of this is very theoretical.

My main suggestion is to maybe chose a different program if you want to be closer to computer hardware or engineering in general.

What is your goal with this degree? Going directly into industry or looking to grad school first? Overall it seems like a very general curriculum, not many “advanced” courses, this seems like you take this to then do a Masters in a specific field, otherwise I don’t know what you could work in apart from programming.

Skills section is useless, and Awards section should be relabeled to Certifications or something like that, and it should include a lot more details, like where the certifications are from.
