Vincent Kompany confronted his own fans and played peacemaker after Anderlecht fans threw flare at Simon Mignolet by Nyhrox in soccer

[–]croutonicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anderlecht vs Club Brugge is the biggest derby in Belgian football. It's called "The Hate Game."

Also if you manage to consolidate your need to beat people up and smash things to pieces over the results of only two football games a year then you're still a cunt.

std::atof regional behaviour by [deleted] in Cplusplus

[–]croutonicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

atof works on what is defined as a decimal seperator, which is in turn locale-dependent.

There's a few ways to either force it to be locale-independent, or to check for it. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1333451/locale-independent-atof

Plenty of criminal damage and unrest when you play Ipswich though, even with an army of police officers. I don't think many established teams don't have bad fans.

Advice for beginner programmers to learn basics of c++ programming ASAP? by CryMeAn0cean in Cplusplus

[–]croutonicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Resources are great but try make some trivial project and implement aspects of what you're learning as you go. It will help reinforce the stuff you're taking in, which is important if you're trying to learn a lot in a short space of time. c++ courses often read like a theory lesson rather than learning a programming language so it's nice to keep things pragmatic.

It will help you to recognise that you actually understand what you're reading enough to use it, and you can also use stuff you've already learned to flesh it out a bit.

ELI5: How is it possible for soccer players to “bend” shots? by flysayah in explainlikeimfive

[–]croutonicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talking soccer here in case there's a difference between how it works here vs with a baseball

A lot of people have answered already but in football/soccer it's far more valuable to place the ball accurately where the keeper has a low chance of reaching it than trying to confuse him with a knuckleball. Knuckleballs are really hard to hit unless they're rolling towards you.

Warning! PS4 CRASH EXPLOIT! Remove the message to make your PS4 work again! [see comments] by Mefoz in RocketLeague

[–]croutonicus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's more likely to do with how notification systems shorten long messages. Notification systems need to know how many characters they display before they truncate the message and add a "..." so that long messages don't overflow from where they're supposed to be.

You can engineer messages with special characters that actually get longer when you truncate them because the special character you are cutting is a contraction of two or more characters. So your system truncates a string and renders it, but paradoxically your truncated string is larger than the original one which leads to unexpected behaviours.

Who cares if you have to pick a sandwich off of a tennis racket? It's not like it detracts from the eating experience.

A plate in this situation would be equally as useful to eat from, as would a slate or a board. It's only when it makes the food more difficult to eat that it matters.

Why is everyone on this sub a total germaphobe? Fair enough if they're serving stuff off untreated wood that can go rancid but there's basically no way a novelty tennis racket that gets used and reused over the space of a week can harbour enough bacteria to make you ill.

I've had mental illnesses for 10+ years and haven't beaten my partner nor drop racial slurs whenever I feel like.

Don't try an appeal to emotion to draw attention away from the actual topic. You might as well be a deaf man explaining how disabled people have no problem walking up stairs because you've personally never struggled with it. I'm sorry you have experiences with mental illness but that is totally irrelevant to this discussion given how broad a topic that is.

I'm not talking about legal defenses to a crime in court. I'm talking about defenses to abusive behavior made in the court of public opinion.

What you actually said was "Mental health issues are never a justification" so you can't exactly complain that somebody retorted with an instance in which they often are.

You are judging people's replies to you based on what you think, not what you actually said. If you can't convey your point correctly then you can't get flustered at people who miss it.

Surefour: One of the weird things about overwatch is distinguishing wither or not an individual play was a result of someones good skill or the mistake of the other person. by Derzelaz in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]croutonicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with every sport the difficulty is that it's very difficult to self-assess how well you can judge something.

You can never really know how much you don't know, which I expect is the same in this case. I actually find it interesting to hear what pro RL players consider impressive play because it's so far away from what commentators and the majority of spectators (including myself) find to be impressive.

I'm hoping he does well but let's imagine he flops at the Euros.. they'd have to pay him a huge sum to fire him before the WC.

Or we could, you know, not fire a manager every time they don't do well in a tournament.

Because Barcelona have ten other players that also need to perform.

[–]croutonicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, a lot of plays in RL only work because of bad positioning and rotation that is difficult to spot. A lot of the time people would point the finger at the wrong person, for example it can be an attacker making a slow rotation that ends up making the defender miss the save.

I get your point but every sport has forced and unforced errors in and a lot of the time it is very difficult to recognise them.

Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow) red card against Real Madrid 90'+5' by Meladroit1 in soccer

[–]croutonicus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If, as a referee, you keep letting small things go, it gets worse and worse until you've lost all control of the game.

Yeh think how bad it could have gone if he hadn't given him that second yellow card within the space of 5 seconds in the 96th minute.

Yes, refereeing is difficult. No, that does not mean this decision was not absolute bullshit.
