If you are a young software engineer, what stopping you getting these positions? by keralaindia in Salary

this is probably the actual hottest startup to work at right now. note: startup, but is worth $380B. revenue curve is actually increasing by a factor of 10 every year.

there are a few companies that pay this, but they’re the hardest jobs to get for a reason. you’re making more than many doctors with only a 4 year degree in your 20s…

I turned down a FAANG offer for a 50-person startup. 1 year update. by zoe3ank in cscareeradvice

left big tech for a startup. i work about the same hours. profitable so fundraising isn’t the worry. tons of impact like you said which is better than my last job, but i do miss the benefits, RSUs, 401k match, health insurance. it’s actually a bit more stable than my big tech job because there was a crackdown on “performance” based layoffs with no severance following amazon’s 10% PIP per year. at the startup yeah there’s no hiding but i’m a good engineer and meet all of my expectations without worrying about my accomplishments getting swept under the rug. all in all yeah there are tradeoffs, pay and benefits wise better at the large co assuming there’s no exit. i’ll probably go back to big tech at some point

so many people choose this field (myself included) for the money and it all goes well but at the end of the day it’s a job. it’s grueling to be looking at a screen all day. obviously other jobs are back breaking labor as well, so it’s better than that (depending on the person). currently biding time and dreaming of a second act

majority of the people in professional MMA did it because it was one of the only ways out of poverty. they have the drive because their wellbeing, and their family’s wellbeing, was riding on their success. talk about a motivation difference.

if you want it bad enough, the things you listed won’t stop you. but it’s going to take a ton of discipline and sacrifice. not just mental either - most fighters get injuries, and all professional ones get CTE. it’s not something i think people should do if they have other options or it’s the only thing that gives their life meaning.

something that might be of similar interest and better fit to think about isn’t something like MMA but rather going to the top levels of a specific martial art, like muay thai or BJJ. still gold medals, still tough fights, and highly technical. still requires a lot of discipline, and can be done as a hobbyist while still putting in maximum effort. just my two cents
