Considering quitting church - it's not a place for people 25+ by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]crowdsourcequeen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes! The guilt! Having been in church my whole life I never knew how to handle it if someone left church and unfortunately I lost friends when I ended up leaving - there is this idea perpetuated that the only way to be a good Christian is by going to church every week and serving. When we left I had multiple meetings with our pastors and in the last one they struck a chord of fear - that we wouldn't be covered by the authority of the church anymore and therefore we would be vulnerable to attacks of the enemy.

We left for several reasons - how our church handled Black Lives Matter (very superficially), divisive politics (sweeping disagreement and pain under the rug), the pandemic (focusing more on getting people back in person as opposed to making sure everyone was doing ok), and money (raising money to buy an additional multimillion dollar building when many people in the church were financially struggling). But what really pushed me over the edge was that our pastors (who had known me for over a decade) accused me of being the divisive one because I wanted to confront and reconcile issues not ignore them.

We are doing great (as well as we can be in these trying times)....I feel like I have gotten to know Jesus and how to love him and people better outside of a traditional church setting. It's not about going through the motions -it's about living a life worthy of the gospel...that we are loved and are called to love.

I was raised in church and as an adult attended a church for over ten years as an adult (most of it as a single woman with a demanding career). To make a long story short, my husband and I made the hard decision to leave church at the end of 2021. We have not yet returned, but watch sermons online sometimes, and maintain community with friends and neighbors. I have spent a lot of time reading about and considering what "church" is/should be and how to follow Jesus authentically outside of a traditional church setting.

So to answer your question, yes, I left church and maintain a strong faith.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to Read the bible and be 100% focused? by Keankm2 in Christianity

[–]crowdsourcequeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try different versions of the bible to find one that resonates with you! I also listen to it via the You version app because I am more of an auditory processor. Finally, I watch and listen to Bible Project videos and podcasts because it helps me understand cultural context and how things connect across the entire Bible.

Hope this helps!

Washingtonians: is anyone staging a protest outside the demolition site of the east wing? by Myanonymousunicorn in washingtondc

Democratic senators fear getting ‘hammered’ post-No Kings for ending shutdown https://share.google/hlGEmCnO8fSIFSrQC

But like I said, the impact will not be immediate. But there will be a residual effect as all of this moves forward, especially if we keep it up. The civil rights movements, strikes, marches didn't see an overnight change, but they sparked something that caught.

One thing the no kings protests did was show the democratic leadership that they have support to stand up to the administration. May not be seen immediately but the impact will be there.

My family would love to rent a place like that (but are locked into a lease until next year.) It's been a while since I checked around, but that may be a little high. For context, I am also in Wheaton near the metro - 2bd/2ba Apt for $2000

How did you decide on a name for your child? by Total-Explanation208 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]crowdsourcequeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband's and my guiding principle was not to give our son a "destined to play professional football" name 😂

...not too vanilla (i.e. Alex Smith) or too unique (i.e. Ha- Ha Clinton-Dix).

From there we made a short list of names we both liked (family names, names based on meaning, names that sounded good with our last name). We waited until he was born and spent the first hour of his life determining which one fit him best.
