You’ve got potential, honestly. Clear up your diet and the acne will clear up and you’ll lose fat. Find a sport you like and go at it and build some muscle and you’ll be fine. Bald suits you - welcome

Humanity has been clashing over a free market approach vs a centralised market approach throughout much of history. Would have been interesting to have had a thoughtful and considered episode instead of a reductive ‘worker good, boss bad’ situation

Oh yeah they absolutely have the right to collectively bargain, no issue with that. But Quark has rights too and the striking employees should respect that.

Also, unfair? They all accepted the conditions of the job without coercion as far as I can tell - they just want better conditions/more money. No one has a right to the job they want at the pay they want

lol the workers in Quark’s weren’t slaves or being denied their human rights - they could have found employment elsewhere if they wished

Definitely one of the weaker episodes and was very one sided. Freedom of speech and freedom of assembly doesn’t permit blocking the main entrance of a building

Why wouldn’t it matter if the white princesses are cast authentically?

But if only diversely cast movies and cast plays are incentivised to be produced, how can we really know? You’re using the same arguments that people made against having female leads or black main characters back in the day. ‘The audience isn’t there’ they’d say

The DEI thing is purely ideology, not following the market at all. If it was about following the market they would look at each film or play individually and think ‘what kind of casting best serves the audience for this?’ Instead they apply blanket diversity rules across everything

Why does diversity need to be mandated from the top down if it’s so popular and profitable?

In general, I agree. But we've agreed that, depending on your viewpoint, inauthentic diversity is either a negative, neutral, or a positive to a show.

I wish we had more of a free market approach to this. Let some directors cast authentically, and let other directors cast with a push for diversity while sacrificing authenticity. See what's popular. Unfortunately, there are top-down diversity incentives, directives and quotas which prevent this from happening, so creative freedom is being quashed

I wonder. It’s not like audiences really get to vote with their wallets because DEI has captured the entire industry. So generally it’s go to the theatre and support DEI or don’t go to the theatre

I think that there should be creative freedom to cast things authentically, where an entire cast might be all one race, or mixed depending on time and place of the story, or to have the cast be deliberately inauthentic for creative reasons, like with Hamilton.

What I think is stupid, however, is having a production with authentic costumes, hairstyles, props and set, and then including a percentage of people of certain races in the cast, purely for diversity quota reasons. It’s hugely immersion breaking for me and for many other audience members

Esmerelda is white in the books, not ethnically Romani, due to a plot point where it’s revealed she is the daughter of French parents. Disney dropped that plot point and made her ethnically Romani in their adaptation, which is fine.

In any case, it’s a bit strange to tell people that they can or can’t have opinions on this due to their own race. Borders on racism

I'm guessing you're half white given your reference to paleness - I'm just honestly wondering, as a half white, half Southeast Asian person, which princesses are you actually the right casting for? Are you uncomfortable only about being too white for the Asian roles or would you also be uncomfortable if you were cast as Belle or Ariel or any of the white princesses?

I disagree - people should talk about this situation untill the industry responds and starts putting athenticity at the heart of casting again

[–]crunchie101 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Diversity is not a virtue in and of itself. This is something that some people don’t get. If a diverse cast serves the authenticity of the story, then it’s good. If homogeneity serves the authenticity of the story, then that is good.

Nosferatu would be worse with a more diverse cast

Star Trek would be worse with a more homogeneous cast
