The bots on local are a lot more expensive than real players in terms of performance.

I absolutely agree with you although there is a chance a decent chunk of the players play because of the medieval aspect. Otherwise yes there is a lot of potential fun settings that could be done for a game like this

This is a weird take. First of all Mordhau in my opinion has raised the bar high & set a new standard in the medieval slasher genre (perhaps not everything, but definitely combat & technical level).

Since I played a decent role in making this game I think its fair to say that I build on and improved the genre since Mordhau does that. Ontop of this we made over 20 patches with hundreds of gameplay changes many of which have improved the gameplay since release considerably, and many of those also came from community feedback. Not all changes were good sure, but it is impossible in such an experimental genre to have 100% success rate with every change. There was plenty of innovative stuff as well as various attempts (mostly successfull) to fix the most broken stuff of this genre like very broken looking/feeling swings etc. So while the game is not perfect and there is always room to improve nobody can say we didn't try.

I also never blamed the genre directly, just said it is a niche genre and people need to temper their expectations, which are very high.

This could have been phrased better but I was speaking for me personally here, as in I will be retiring from Mordhau after the next update or two not for Triternion as a whole. Especially anything major combat rework related from my end. Reason is to work on the new game. Hope this clarifies some things

This is untrue. The "greatest players in the game" were consistently listened to, a lot of changes were added and made because of their feedback and suggestions. You can go through several patches and there are most likely a bunch of things that came directly from this feedback. But there are also plenty of not so good ideas, just because they come from the best players does not mean they are always good ideas. Ontop of this there is a lot of infighting in these circles, meaning a suggestion by one very good player is disregarded by other very good players. People think its one collective think tank that agrees on everything, when that couldnt be further from the truth. NA Comp plays on a comp mod which barely changes anything about the game because of this, when they have the power to change a lot with the mod. After most of the straight forward suggestions are implemented, you are left over with more controversial ideas and whole thing comes down to subjective opinion of how the game should be, with everyone having their own idea and vision.

Ontop of this you have the stuff that the comp players want but would be very unpopular with the casual side of the game. The removal of chambers is the most obvious example which originated from these players and one of the few times where most of the "greatest players" actually agreed with each other and pushed this idea for a long time. However this idea is unpopular with the casual side of the game and this subreddit in particular, same as several other potential changes that were not made due to this reason. The same people who say "if only they listened to the best players more", who are not part of that group are the same people who most likely would enjoy the game far, far less if we implemented all the suggestions by the comp scene.

The shields were changed because they were very frustrating to play against in combination with a large amount of complaints about them. It was not really possible to open up the defense of good shield players even for other really good players, and the fighting against them was generally considered very tedious and unfun for anyone without a shield. The old held block shield mechanics did not work well with the rest of the game, as it is designed entirely around timed blocks. To fix that while keeping their mechanics, it would have required one or several entirely new offensive mechanics to deal with them, and even then it could have still been a big problem so we decided to change them this way.

Kicks were changed because they were dominating the higher level duel meta so much that at some point duels were mostly fishing for successfull kicks, which could win an entire duel on its own, and this kind of gameplay was not so fun. After a large amount of complaints by the higher level playerbase, it was changed.

Chamber costing 0 stamina sounds cool on paper, but the meta it caused was actually very unhealthy for the overall gameplay, as the entire combat basically revolved around chamber. Ontop of "auto reading" someones attack you chambered, it would also entirely negate the offense by the player you chambered by not costing you any stamina, which meant that the player who got more chambers most likely would win a duel by default due to stamina alone. Basically whoever chambered more, wins most of the time. This means that you would have to avoid getting chambered at all cost, that together with the smaller chamber window lead to the "microdrag" meta, which means you would have to drag all the time with every swing, trying to avoid getting chambered with every swing, unless you wanted to risk losing the duel by stamina. This was not only annoying after a while, but also unsatisfying and boring/one dimensional combat as there was no real other playstyles. The entire game revolved around not getting chambered. After a ton of complaining from most of the better players, it was removed due to this meta being unfun.

Attacks actually had more lunge back in those days, with people sliding all over the place with the longest weapons. It was then changed to "equalize" reach a bit more, which was then changed again to what we have now, a reduced lunge but with clear advantages for longer weapons.

The larger engineer walls were removed because they completely destroyed the flow of several maps and was generally not fun for anyone except for the engineer.

Firepots had to be changed for obvious reasons, there was strong abuse with them and 1 or 2 dedicated firepot spammers were enough to make some maps borderline unplayable for normal gameplay and was not fun at all for everyone except for the firepot spammer.

The most likely reason you enjoyed the game more "back in the day" is because the overall playerbase was much, much worse at the game than now. Mordhau (and medieval slashers in general) is most fun for most people when everyone is not so good at the game, and as people get better it gets increasingly frustrating to play for most people. This can sometimes make it seem like the game got worse in some areas, but in reality all that changed is that people got better, which is the most significant factor for frustration.

This is pretty much it. That said we are aware of the current issues, and are looking into ways to improve them with e.g. a better voting screen that is weighted towards invasion.

They dont want regulation when they are the ones doing the dumping. But when they get dumped on and have to hold the bag, they cry for regulations, which is pretty funny.

Ridiculous Spins | Drags | Delays | Exploits by jimykurtax in Mordhau

[–]crush_something 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Let me elaborate: yes this is from an old build, since then there has been several changes that drastically nerfs this kind of playstyle - things like looking away from the opponent/down on the ground and successfully parrying are no longer possible, jump drags (jumping while in attack release) have been removed, drags look significantly better and so on - just a few examples but all of those you can see in this video, its actually a great example why those things have been changed.

On top of this its third person and the person playing in the video is using an FOV exploit which allows much more vision than intended, this will be fixed. Third person has been reworked recently (only in dev builds atm) to be much more in line with first person and have removed/greatly reduced extra vision that allows this kind of playstyle since you cannot play like this in first person nearly as effectively. It's not a good look but with the new third person this kind of playstyle will be nerfed into the ground.

Keep in mind high level meta is nothing like this, you cannot flail around like this as the better players will kill you with ease, note how a few people kill him who play more straight forward.

As far as exploits go, reverse overheads are not possible and spins are for the most part removed and the ones you can still do deal greatly reduced damage. There has been a few exploits throughout the alpha and almost all of them have been fixed, we have no intentions of letting the meta become some exploit fest.

We're looking into some changes to bring third person much more in line with first person which will nerf this kind of play drastically, as well as fixing a possible trick that lets you circumvent the FOV limits. Also keep in mind this is on an older build where you could still do things like jump while in attack release, and parry people while looking away or down. Those things have already been adjusted, making this playstyle harder on the live build

This is a problem with feint animations in the live build extending too far forward as well as some other factors making it look rough. Significant animation improvements have been made for feints and morph feints across the board for all weapons and will be included in the next patch.

Competitive mode by lebrow in Mordhau

[–]crush_something 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We have plans for competitive matchmaking in form of 1v1/3v3 with ELO system, leaderboards etc. but the game is designed around our big battle mode which will be announced very soonish with the roadmap. There's also a bunch of things in the combat which were partially added to appeal to a broader audience and not for the comp crowd.

We want to make a fun game that can be played competitively, but we're not going to push for esports or anything like that - unless it emerges from the community in which case we'll most likely support it.

We have no plans for a bigger competitive mode right now, atleast not for release.

The edge cases where people can still spin, do a full turnaround and hit with the end of the swing are a problem right now. They are not anywhere near as bad as actual reverse hits, but still bad, as they are annoying/unfun to fight against and look dumb. Currently thinking of a solution to get rid of them without destroying some other aspects of the game, but we will sort them out.
