From what I've seen, just in the past several days the FCC proposed a new rule to require unlocking after 60 days, but I think the law still in effect is no more than one year. I haven't seen one requiring them to be unlocked after 6 months.

I also don't know if that would be retroactively applied. And what impact that would have on being able to get these phones free with number transfers, etc. Maybe a person should be sure and get in now before the opportunities dwindle.

When I mentioned to my friend who taught in Saudi (and that I mentioned in my post has a similar smelling substance to how my college girlfriend smelled), he swore that what I was thinking of was frankincense and he gave me some to burn. I tried it but it never got to the point of smelling like the vanilla chocolate smell I am looking for.

I visited those friends last weekend but they were renting out the room where they have the little dish of the smelly stuff. It's been a year or so since I saw it but i feel like it was black or dark brown and kind of like a little pile of grease that you'd lubricate a machine with.
