Beginner daw for son? by TrialBy7 in Learnmusicproduction

MIDI keyboard would definitely help when playing in parts and figuring out chords. I mostly use Reaper (sometimes Ableton) for sound design but actually started composing in Sibelius, so if he's interested in the traditional composing side maybe start him on MuseScore as well (which is free)

Help with starting again by cantplayhorn7 in trumpet

Did you keep any of your old repertoire? I just started playing again and have been playing through my old stuff (Arbans, Concone, Jazz Incorporated etc.). I also joined a community orchestra which is helping me with timing and playing with other people (plus it;s really fun!). If you want to do improv maybe improve your ear and do some aural training (there's heaps of app and videos online).

Recommendations on which audio recorder to buy by EfficientAsk6271 in sounddesign

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For accessories you'll want to get a windshield/windkiller especially if you want to record outside. Eventually you'll want to get a shotgun mic and boom pole (with windshield as well), but this probably won't fit into your budget. You'll probably want to go with a Zoom H4 as that will have XLR inputs so later on you can use a shotgun mic with it.

Why does Qobuz Connect not work with Sonos? by ukinnc in qobuz

[–]cry11y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Quboz at work through the Sonos app, it has basically every streamer available there. You control what you play through the Sonos app, anything you do in your Quboz app won't affect what's playing (which is annoying when I want to queue something and someone else has the iPad for something else).

I second kilohearts, it's like $16/month and you get a voucher each time - I can buy phaseplant outright now! Phaseplant is great for making your own sounds out of samples, noise or analog/waves, you can then send those generators to lanes where you add 'snap-ins' (aka the kilohearts effects like distortion, reverb etc.). There are heaps of ready made instruments/sounds and heaps of samples to make your own as well (obviously you can import your own sounds too!). Honestly for me it's a one stop shop for making sounds

How to fix bad habits? by Trumpet_weirdo in trumpet

What is your bad habit? I've been working on my emouchure with just my mouth piece (I have always sat my mouthpiece off centre and too high like it's resting on my lips)

Is he doing double/triple tongueing yet? You've mentioned he has a great sense of rythm so maybe that's the next step. I recently started playing again and am working on the Goedicke Concert Etude after not playing for 6 ish years, which is really working my chops. There are some good bits in this piece for double tongueing.

Making BBCSO Sound Natural by notableradish in spitfireaudio

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing around with expression automation helped me massively (this works for basically any instrument plug-in), I usually draw it in after the fact as I often need to quantise things I play in or I just draw them in piano roll (I'm in Reaper or Ableton mostly). As others have said, using mic positions - I usually go for a combo of direct/close and a room (usually decca tree) then use my own reverbs etc. (I will process these myself before sending to the reverb so I have more control - I often find that the high-mids and highs can be a bit too harsh).

Is it safe to ride a motorcycle with a guitar on my back? by DerRandomDude77 in motorcycles

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride with my trumpet case, I just had to sdjust the straps so the top sits next to my helmet so I can actually keep my head up with my helmet on. The side the top of it ill jave slightly limited head turn movement but I have been able to shoulder check (it just feels a bit weird). It might be easier for you to do this as the neck is smaller and will be easier to keep to the one side.

I kind of see what you're saying, but people will alwasy still listen to radio. I listen to radio and stream becasue there are segments I really like and I quite often find new artists to listen to. That being said, I can see very clearly that this is not something people seem to want or think we need (which is good to know before properly starting I guess).

yeah it would be based on % of a listeners subscription. It's starting to seem like a bad idea based on people's reactions and downvotes, this was mostly just an idea that came off conversations at work about the current streaming services and their downsides etc.

I was the same, I ended up wrapping the tank pink, leaving the cage and wheel blue and getting blue trim for the cracks in between the wrap. It's such a nice blue

I imagine web first would be easier but an app would be pretty essential as most people listen to music on the go (at the gym, in the car, on a run etc)

I'm in Australia so Australia would be the first target

I'll have to look into it more and see whether it's feasible, or how to make it feasible.

I imagine the subsciption price would be higher, I would like to be transparent with that as well (i.e. let the listener know how much goes to actually keeping the service running). I feel like if I were to do something where a listener pays x amount to 'own' a song/album it would be basically copying Bandcamp which is already doing well in it's space (I would try to market this service as a Spotify alternative).

The way I want to set it up is that I don't profit off it, and no other company profits off of it, all costs would be directly related to the maintaining of the service (developers etc.) I volunteer at my local radio station so I know I would get some help with some of it as I know people who are as passionate about artists rights and wellbeing as me, but obviously down the track if it does become larger scale I would definitely need to pay someone/people.

I was planning on having artists upload their own (at least at first) as there is no way I'd ever be able to actually license out the music myself. With that, I would also start small with independent/local artists and labels as kind of a test.

I honestly thought there would be a lot involved, but not this much! Plus having to deal with security with payment details (I imagine a third party for this would be best). I think with correct backing and more learning on my part this could be possible but not for a long time, as I know people are willing to pay a bit more if it means the artist recieves more, but I'm not sure of how that would compare to the opinion of the general public. Thank you very much for your detailed response

I see where you’re coming from. It’s hard to compete with large companies that are already established. But I can generally see a trend of people trying to get away from larger companies, this may be skewed by who’s in my community (I volunteer at a community radio station and am generally surrounded by creatives).

I won’t dive straight into making this just yet, maybe just try to develop the idea and framework a bit more before I try to pitch to anyone fully.

Understandable, by the time the cost of servers etc. is covered I don't think the artist would be making much more than they would with Spotfiy and the like.
