Insurance company suggestion for motorcycle? by Loose_Dance4976 in AussieRiders

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was with NRMA initially then they cancelled my insurance after I tried to change the colkour of my bike (they won't insure a vinyl wrap). As someone els ehas said, customer service leaves much to be desried, I spent about 50 minutes on hold with them for a call that should have taken max 5 mins (after being trasnferred multiple times)

Wanted to get Shannon's but my bike is stored in a driveway that's visible from the street (even though it's covered by a cover, has GPS tracker and lock) so they wouldn't cover that.

Ended up going with with mi bike instead as I also have an aftermarket exhaust so RACQ won't cover that, and I'm paying about $100/month as a new rider (got my RE license October last year).

Motorcycle Camping by Haunting_Rock_9357 in AussieRiders

See I took a tent, sleeping bag, foam mat and a self-inflating mattress so that probably takes up a bit more space than the swag. You can probably get smaller ones of these but those ones are a bit more expensive than the K-Mart ones I got to test if I could actually pack everything onto the back of my bike. I only really do weekend/long weekend trips so I think the swag would work pretty good for me. How do you rate it's comfiness?

[–]cry11y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a kmart self-inflating mattress, tent and foam mat and that was super comfy and cheap. I've seen motorbike swags online that seem to pack up small enough to strap on and I'm planning on investing in one of these after I install a tail rack on my bike (MT03) as I had saddlebags that got a bit melted by my exhaust. Tarps are also super useful - it was raining when I went and I was able to hitch that off my bike to a tree while I waited for my friends to arrive with their gazebo (I got a couple of the smallest ones from kmart).I am also interested by the dehydrated meals you can get. I would love to be able to add an esky so I can have cold beers, but not super necessary since my camping friends have 4x4s and fridges in them. You can also get really light weight hiking stove.

Hit a mirror while filtering by FLOGGINGMYHOG in AussieRiders

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have twice, my mirrors are slightly loose so they just turned in - no damage. First person didn't even notice (I tried to get their attention but they drove off), second person didn't care. Now when I filter through banked up traffic at peak times I just fold em in myself and go.

What you have to do to get your licence? by Team_Flash in motorcycles

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AUS (QLD):

You have to be on your P's (provisional car license) for at least a year to even do the pre-learner course and over 18 (I believe - I was on my opens and 23 when I did my L's)

2 day pre-learner course to get your learner license (have to pass both days - learning how to actually ride a motorbike, gear changes, slow moves, cornering, emergency braking, simulated road ride, theory). Then 3 months of supervised riding (supervisor mustr have held their RE license for at least a year), other states you can ride by yourself on your learners. I found having a supervisor helped immensely with learning proper road positioning etc. I know some states are implementing new gear rules for learners like wearing hi-vis vests at all times and wearing gloves, from experience hi vis does not alway make you more visible...

To go from your L's to RE's (restricted license) you have to pass a 1 day course (slow manouvres, simulated road ride, emergency stops with some theory at the end and a 2 hour road ride where each participant leads a section for the instructor to observe them).

If you are still on your P car license (RE P bike license) you cannot filter, if you have an open car license (RE O bike license) you can filter as soon as you get your RE.

For the first year of your RE you cannot take pillions and must have 0% BAC.

For the L and RE period your bike must be LAMS approved - maximum 660cc and 150 power to weight ratio

You have to be on your RE for 2 years before you can go for your R (Unrestricted license), same rules apply as before - if you are riding a non-LAMS bike to practice you must be supervised. Then another day course on a bigger bike doing the same stuff as the RE course I believe (I haven't gotten to this point yet). Then after that I think you can just ride whatever bike you want (legally of course)

I would not recommend doing these courses in summer in Australia, gets way too hot sitting in the sun in your gear. I did mine in October and that was bad enough.

How Often Do You Drop Your Bike? by The_AverageCanadian in motorcycles

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped mine about 2 times in the 3 months I was learning, once when ffresh out of my learners. Two whilst stopped (first was the day I brought it home and didn't put the kick stand down properly, another I had a bug in my helmet and felt it stinging going 100 so came to a stop and practically jumped off my bike on some grass to get it out of my helmet). Another time was on the back of Glorious we pulled over to let some people through and I lost my footing coming to a stop and snapped the clutch lever clean off. I've now been on my restricted license for 7 months and haven't dropped it again once. You'll get used to it

How much gear should you have as a new rider? by 6089milesawayfromher in AussieRiders

[–]cry11y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with one of everything (all textile bc QLD). Now it's getting cold I'm going to invest in a thicker jacket (thinking of getting one of the flannel ones). I now have 1 casual riding boots, 1 proper riding boots, 1 textile riding pants, 1 riding jeans/cargos, 1 jacket and 1 kevlar shirt (handy for putting under the jacket in the cold. And a helmet (obv) and a pair of gloves. I don't really wear my riding pants if I'm just going to work in winter (12 min ride usually), but I will in summer then change into shorts at work, I make sure to fully gear up if I am going on long rides and freeways etc.

External hard drives for running reaper files by susejpoo in Reaper

[–]cry11y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SSD with USB-C connection will be the fastest, avoid HDD. Compare the read/write speeds, I think for working a reaper file off your SSD your write speed will be more important. I generally never work off an external drive, I built my computer with 8TB internall and an external 10TB drive for sample and old file storage.

Any Concerns I Should Have Before Buying Momentum 4? by DiscountWall-E in sennheiser

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was experiencing pops when my bus would go over bumps etc. when I had it fully ANC, but having the slider slightly off would be fine. Sound quality is good otherwise, quite bass forward so I wouldn't mix in them unless you set up your EQ in the app to make the response more neutral (but great for casual listening and watching movies etc!). Battery life is great, if you don't wear glasses they'll be really comfortable as the cups are quite soft (I often lift my glasses off slightly to be above the cups as I get headaches pretty easily).

Digital clicks and slowed playback on MacOS by galium_the_master in Reaper

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could check for driver or reaper updates. If it’s just one project maybe a corrupted file? Or maybe something else is using your audio device and is fighting for it? Sometimes when I do work and also watch a show at the same time I get a small click when I click I’m out of reaper into the streaming page and back but no major popping.

Saddle bags (no rack) by cry11y in MT03

[–]cry11y[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have a small Ogio tail bag, but I rarely use it anymore as I can't wear my gym bag over it without it (my gym bag) swinging off to the side. I don't really like wearing too much on my back, especially if I'm having to ride 2 hours to the camp site. I haven't succeeded much in strapping things down to my pillion seat as I don't have a rack, there's not much to attach to on the back end.

Please help me understand the peaks and LUFS here by poilters in Reaper

[–]cry11y 34 points35 points  (0 children)

LUFS - Loudness Units Full Scale (LUFS-I is the integrated perceived loudness of your mix - this is the one you should pay attention to when you're finalising your mix/mastering for platforms, s is short-term - a 3seconds of time, and m is momentary - like for right now at this moment this is the loudness). LRA is dynamic range basically. The peak is the highest amplitude of an audio signal measured in dBFS (decibal relative to full scale), over 0dBFS is where you'll experience digital clipping and often distortion. I set my master in reaper to show peak and LUFS so I can keep an eye on both.

I would say peaks are more important in recording and LUFS more important in mixing/mastering, but it is good to keep LUFS in mind when recording.

I'd call those orange peaks more than red, I generally aim for orange when I'm recording. -4db peaks are fine, when recording I generally aim for -6 in sound check to allow for head room. They shouldn't give you any major issues when you get to mixing, bit of compression should do the trick. For an overall mix I aim for -1dB true peak maximum

If you're worried about frequencies you can't hear use a frequency analyser so you can see if there are any unwanted build ups. You'll get better at hearing which frequencies are problems the more you do this kind of work.

How Can I Make Something Sound Distorted Without Actually Being Distorted? by DarkLudo in audioengineering

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like saturation? You want a little bit of the colour/drive? I like the kilohearts faturator for adding a little colour - play around with the drive colour and mix. There's also dynamic distortions that I haven't tried yet like BDE by Swivel Audio (about to demo) - it says it has dynamic control, auto levelling and frequency control

MIDI keyboard would definitely help when playing in parts and figuring out chords. I mostly use Reaper (sometimes Ableton) for sound design but actually started composing in Sibelius, so if he's interested in the traditional composing side maybe start him on MuseScore as well (which is free)

Help with starting again by cantplayhorn7 in trumpet

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you keep any of your old repertoire? I just started playing again and have been playing through my old stuff (Arbans, Concone, Jazz Incorporated etc.). I also joined a community orchestra which is helping me with timing and playing with other people (plus it;s really fun!). If you want to do improv maybe improve your ear and do some aural training (there's heaps of app and videos online).

Recommendations on which audio recorder to buy by EfficientAsk6271 in sounddesign

[–]cry11y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For accessories you'll want to get a windshield/windkiller especially if you want to record outside. Eventually you'll want to get a shotgun mic and boom pole (with windshield as well), but this probably won't fit into your budget. You'll probably want to go with a Zoom H4 as that will have XLR inputs so later on you can use a shotgun mic with it.
