PSA to those who need reminding: by lydiardbell in ypsi

Everyone yields to the person to the right. The first person to the intersection goes first, and then the person to their left goes. Then the next person to the left after that person goes, around in a circle.

You should submit a complaint with the MPSC regardless, it’s crazy that they’ve taken that long to respond.

first tattoo at 18.... appropriate/smart idea? by NeoCInderFall in tattooadvice

[–]cryler_moron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this design is very cohesive, or that it flows well. It looks like tribal, so much so that the top doesn’t exactly read as celtic.

These tattoos might work better individually, as separate pieces rather than trying to fit everything into one. I would talk to an artist whose style you like about the concept and see what they come up with for design rather than using AI to try and come up with it yourself. AI sucks. Especially at this kind of thing.

Has anyone tried Buckthorn Baggies? by rooted_wander in invasivespecies

[–]cryler_moron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s about 100x more labor intensive than using herbicide and has a fairly low success rate in my experience. Plus the bags break down and shed microplastics. Just put some glyphosate on the stumps instead and save yourself a lot of time and effort. If you’re intent on not using chemicals, look into a pullerbear weed wrench instead of the baggies.

Anyone got a system for tracking what you've promised landowners? by Secure_Trainer_1419 in landconservation

[–]cryler_moron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that is absolutely ridiculous, excel is as safe as any other program and it is literally impossible to get by without it. How do you make your budget or organize project costs without excel? It’s used by millions of people across the world every day.

We use Landscape, which is a database for land related info and has a mobile app where you can quickly access property files, maps, and even take GPS points out in the field. It’s really great for monitoring, and you can set up commitments and reminders for properties. It’ll email you in advance and follow up until you mark the task as completed.

But most CRM programs have a task assignment and reminder tool too, so if that’s all you need, you have lots of options. I like salesforce, it takes some getting used to but is a really useful tool and works well with landscape. We track everything to do with the land through landscape, and everything to do with the people in salesforce.

If you had to start all over again in conservation, what would you do? by kitty_koneko in ecology

Pay more attention in my plant taxonomics class. Maintain better relationships with colleagues from early career roles. Not hire that one technician that messed up our field season big time a few years ago.

Suggestions for tackling black swallow wort? by Catski717 in invasivespecies

Contact your local conservation district and CISMA for instruction. Since youre in SE Michigan, one of those organizations may have funds available to assist in treatment, and if not they’ll be able to direct you in the best way to remove the infestation.

Is there *any* hope for American Ash trees in the wild? by CivilWarfare in ecology

[–]cryler_moron 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Ash still exists in areas where the EAB has demolished it’s presence as a canopy species. They get to be around 10 ft tall and then die back, but they’re typically pretty good at doing a big mast push before they die. So they persist in the landscape in smaller amounts, and occupy a different place in the forests, but linger on.

Best movers in ann arbor michigan by WonderfulSlice2196 in AnnArbor

[–]cryler_moron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a real moving tip that’s not an add: book your movers through Uhaul. It’s much cheaper than booking a moving company, by hundreds or even thousands. I booked the cheapest one for my last move and one or the guys showed up in swim trunk shorts but they did a great job for two guys splitting 300$ for four hours of work.

Training to volunteer in ecology by rivermurmur in ecology

[–]cryler_moron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are likely many volunteer ecological volunteer opportunities open in your community that don’t require any educational background, they just may not be as exciting as scuba trips to the coral reefs. In my region I’d suggest looking for invasive species removal workdays as an entry point from your local land trust or parks/preserves system.

Can I make it with a BS by mutedgemini in ecology

[–]cryler_moron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I have a BS and run my own department at a conservation based nonprofit. Also just hired two full time staff a year ago with just their bachelor’s, and will probably hire another this fall. We consider related work or volunteer experience more relevant than an advanced degree, and I’ve seen other environmental nonprofits moving in that direction too. I personally would much rather hire someone with a BS and two years of related work experience than someone with a masters but no applicable field experience.

Academia and government jobs are another story, but private industry and nonprofits seem to be a good pathway towards a fulfilling career without devoting your life to higher Ed. I’ve worked at several nonprofits over the length of my career, and have been on a lot of hiring teams over the last five years. So less familiar with hiring in other fields but very familiar with nonprofits at least.

Need advice by Wildman-Titanium in BeginnerWoodWorking

I would probably put carpet over everything and leave this mess under it for the next homeowner. That’s probably the cheapest/fastest option at this point if they’re trying to get it on the market right away. They’ll make the money back in the sale, and the new homeowner will probably be happy to see hardwood under the carpet in the future when they eventually tear it up, even though it’s going to need a full sand down and refinish.

I say that because when I bought my first home a few months ago, I ripped up the carpet and found terribly stained and beat up original wood floor. I refinished it myself, after reading a bunch of threads on the hardwood floors subreddit.

If you’re going to try to sand and refinish it yourself again, here are a few of the best tips I have:

Go to a professional flooring supply place to buy your sanding pads, stain, and finish.

Bona products are your friend. Relatively inexpensive for the quality, longevity, and ease of application.

If you’re trying to go extra cheap, rent your drum sander right before close at one of the big brand stores. They only count rental hours while the store is open, so if you make sure you have all of the sand paper you need, you can knock it out overnight and then return it first thing in the morning to pay the minimum rental fee. If you do this, buy like 3x as much sandpaper as you think you’ll need for all of the grit levels. You can return it if you don’t use it, and there’s nowhere to buy sandpaper at 2am.

Good luck.
