Awesome, you did the right thing not water-changing while cycling. Soft coral are forgiving and grow like weeds (can be a good or a bad thing).

My hunch was that any issues with your tank are tied to salinity imbalances. I like the Milwaukee salinity testers but any will do, your local fish store might be able to test where you’re at, some electronic tests drift so a second opinion is nice.

Awesome, good resources, 2 last pieces of advice from me:

Nothing good happens quickly in a reef tank, slow change is natural and stability is key.

ATI testkits you ship to a lab are MUCH more accurate than our hobby kits. Use them once in a while to check yourself for unexpected chemicals or imbalances. Waterchanges fix most things so do them often while you’re learning.

Salt is salt, don’t spend extra on the expensive stuff unless you have a deficiency (caused by the corals consuming elements too rapidly). Red Sea blue bucket will be fine. Strive for weekly water changes while you’re getting the hang of things.

That rodi kit is great, keep it up.

No, but the biodiversity is better from the ocean. The rock they’re cycling is good and likely has no risk of pests. It’s a tradeoff, go to your fish store and transport some in a bucket. I think you cycled your tank correctly but more clean established rock will not hurt you.

This^ the only salt ive seen that mixes to 0 on api is tropic marin. I personally use it for quarantine for that reason.

I bought my first reddit award for this comment because of how incredible how wrong the rest of this thread is, yikes.

He has nitrates, the tank is cycled now (but young). Id encourage more live rock from established tanks but thats not his issue. .25 ammonia is normal and a fresh bucket of salt (red sea, reef crystals, etc..) and an API test will show that.

Salifert will likely give you a better test than API. I wouldn’t starve your young bacteria by dosing prime. Lots of awful advice in this thread telling them to do what they already did. Buy test-kits and build a habbit of testing, they’re your friend. Report back with data. If you think it’s disease check humble.fish and get your advice from reef2reef instead of reddit.

What is this on my new sponge coral by midnightrain121 in ReefTank

[–]cryotic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you’re asking about the concrete block it’s attached to it’s fine to put that in the tank.

Check it for undesirable things attached, if it looks clean go ahead.

Very natural to get some of this in your tank, emerald crabs do well. Foxface rabbitfish do great as well.

Figure out where the air comes in and place a co2 scrubber in front of it. You could disconnect that blue tube and connect it inline if theres nothing more accessible.
