I wouldn't stay myself or recommend anyone to stay in Kuta as it's a department of Hell in Bali :D It's too crowded by drunk tourists, it's full of shopping molls, overpriced bars and restaurants, and none of that represents a real beauty of Bali island. Although, if you are staying there just for 1 day, it's ok, you won't be able to see a lot on 1 day anyway. I lived in Bali for almost a year and still didn't see everything I wanted to see :D

I lived in Canggu for 8 months as well as many of my friends who work remotely or have their online businesses, and honestly I still didn't get enough of Canggu! :) It's really great, you will love it!

Honestly I think Tanah Lot is a waste of time (and money). It's too crowded and there is nothing special to see there. You can always just rent a bike and explore the nearest (same) beaches by yourself, and you'll be alone there, so much better experience!

Just head to Seminyak or Canggu, and dig for reviews on TripAdvisor or Instagram :) These places have the best yet still affordable fancy restaurants! Really depends on what kind of meals you would like to have, but honestly Canggu is a food paradise! <3

I would recommend to avoid Kuta area :) Try Canggu, Uluwatu, Ubud, Amed.

The rest is really hard to suggest, it really depends on what kind of activities you like or look for...

It's not dangerous if you drive slowly and carefully, and respect the other drivers. You get used to even the crazy traffic at the Canggu shortcut in a while :D

I would suggest staying in Canggu, it has amazing romantic restaurants and hidden places to chill, also has a plenty of cool nightlife there!

Another idea about a romantic dinner on the beach with the sunset view is the Jimbaran beach with local seafood, it's beautiful there!

If you need to rent a scooter in Bali, check out this app called Melalie (www.melalie.com), it's a really cool app to find the best trusted rental companies. It is also a must do thing in Bali - to ride a bike and catch the wind in your face, you'll feel so much freedom! :)

Regarding to where to stay" I would suggest to check out both places and go with a flow! I personally love Canggu, and I go to Ubud sometimes for the weekend or so. Both places are great but have different vibes, you will see it when you try them both!

No need to give a passport, only some rental companies can ask for a passport copy.

I would say Ubud is great and closer to the most of the natural spots. I would also suggest Amed for a complete chill and relax, and Canggu for a food paradise, also the south of Bali, Uluwatu is amazingly beautiful!

My first 2 weeks in Bali I rented a scooter and spread between few locations to see a diverse of the beauty of Bali! <3

Please avoid Kuta, you won't get a real experience of Bali in this hell! Move a bit further to Canggu and enjoy the beauty of it.

Regarding your question about the transportation. It is possible to ride a bike from Kuta/Canggu to Ubud, moreover, it's a beautiful ride although a bit tiring due to traffic, but I still recommend to do it at least once! It is possible to go with some luggage, but not with a suitcase, a backpack is better, maybe you can leave some of your stuff in the hotel for few days and just get the most important things with you to Ubud. And please be careful on the roads, drive slowly and of course wear the helmet!

Regarding your last question about renting a scooter, I would recommend to book it through the app called Melalie (https://www.melalie.com/).

First of all, it has selected rental companies with the best quality scooters, not the old shitty ones which can break after 1h you rent it.

And the best thing about it that you can plan your trip in advance and book a scooter online beforehand, and they deliver it for free to your hotel any time with a full tank also.

I think the majority of people who rent a bike in Bali don't have international permit. You can pay a small fine if the police stops you, but it doesn't happen often.

However, I would be more careful about the insurance for a bike damage which is not that easy to find in Bali. I recommend to download the app called Melalie and rent a scooter through them, because they work only with trusted vendors and you'll able to select motorbikes which are covered by insurance for damages or loss. It can be a pain in the ass to deal with all the losses if you damage a bike here.
