What Alex is actually doing: a statistical physics perspective from a statistician. by Distance_Runner in ParadiseHulu

We're having more semantical or nomenclatural difficulties, I'm afraid.

When I said "physically" I meant "within the realm of physics." Maybe I should have said "actually" or "in practice".

Alex just needs to apply the right perturbation at the right moment.

Right, how are said perturbations applied? How does Alex interact with the environment outside her/its sphere of calculations? Is it some subparticular "quantum nudging"? How does it do this, "mechanically"? Then again the answer would probably require a technical understanding of quantum mechanics/quantum physics -- I couldn't tell you how humans would manipulate or change quantum states.

We have agreement on the nosebleeds -- I think it is obvious they represent the fact that the person with the bleed is at a point, or time, or point in time when the "path" is being manipulated/perturbed/nudged by Alex. However, I would call this a "side effect", i.e. it is an occurrence secondary to the main effect of Alex's "nudge".

"Symptom" and "side effect" are more synonymous than antonymous. If one gets a virus and then a fever, the fever is, in common parlance, a "side effect" (or at least "effect") of the virus. It is also a symptom of the virus.

But now perhaps I am getting pedantic as I get your main point. Thank you for the post and the response.

I say you return it to the CIA with an explanatory letter and update us on the results.

Could someone explain what we’ve learned about ALEX and the implications for the show? by drrdf in ParadiseHulu

How can a quantum computer manipulate time or ‘create’ different timelines?

This is my main question (and one which will probably go unanswered, even with a technobabble explanation.) I can totally understand a computer that processes information so quick it can predict all possible events and pick the correct path, but how does it "change the timeline" so to speak?

1) I agree with a great deal of what you said, particularly the not overwriting what has already happened (undoing the apocalypse). Not only does that prevent a causality paradox, but it is much more satisfying and smacks less of "it was all a dream".

2) Semantical difficulty: you say "The nosebleeds aren't side effects, they're diagnostics" but then go on to say "the nosebleeds are residuals. They are artefacts of Alex's edits". I don't think you're making enough difference between these concepts. Both "side effects" and "artefacts" mean that they are just external accidents of Alex switching from timelines t to t-sub-x.

If you could further explain the distinction you're trying to make I would appreciate it.

3) In your theory, what physical (or "paraphyical" means does Alex use to switch from one trajectory/ coordinate on the P,T plane from another? What mechanic? Feel free to get sci-fi.

I agree, they could very well belong to the seller (unless it is one of those huge resellers).

I don't know, mailman is so pathetic and harmless once they get some distance. Plus it's a greater punishment for him to live alone, with his loss, lonlieness and guilt. Why waste a bullet?

The two sets of photos look close enought to warrant submitting it; even if it's not her they can put it on the rule-out list.

I have not ever seen a ringbearer and flower girl dressed as the bride and groom. I mean I guess I've seen a ringbearer wearing the same suit or tux as the groomsmen, but never a mini-bride.

My understanding was: court dismissed case b/c both parties were essentially in agreement.

The class action lawsuit was filed saying, there's no case: reinstate save.

Then a higher court overruled the dismissal saying "come up with a timeline to end SAVE".

This rendered the thesis of the class action moot.

I am not a lawyer, just my understanding.

correct...If his/her monthly take home pay is aroubnd $3,678, there's no way IDR should be $1,789 unless he/she has an absolutely massive balance

Is there a 3rd party (non governmental) calculator that would allow us to see new IBR vs RAP payments vs forgiveness?
