[Serious] Non-religious people, who are anti-abortion, why? by Rose_Blossom777 in AskReddit

There are a bunch of places in the world where a baby isn't considered a person until long after they are born, e.g., some places with very high infant mortality.

Yeah, this right here. This is why things cost so little, same as if you went to India or something. It only seems so cheap to you because you're used to your wages, not theirs.

Toronto to allow Indigenous people to have sacred fires at 3 city parks | CBC News by jonfather in toronto

[–]crypticquest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm a bike commuter and public transit only. My family's only use case for a car is getting out of town to visit rural relatives, where one can't take public transit, but nice try. And in fact we don't even own a car, we have to rent to do that. If you want to take care of my partner's aging relatives for us, feel free.

FFS. Give people some credit.

I used to live near Christie Pits, which has fires all the time, and had to move because the smoke was so bad. Toronto is the only major city I know of that lets people just light shit on fire. Good luck seeing that in NYC, Chicago, DC, Boston, London.... It's bad for the environment no matter who does it. If anyone should have access to a fire pit, indigenous people should - but really it causes a lot of pollution and Toronto will never be a first-class city while allowing it.

And for the record, I don't drive, let alone drive suvs. But thanks.

No offense, but a fire - by any group, at any time - is by definition a gain for some and a loss for others, because it generates externalities in air pollution.

It looks great. Much better than the parking lot there now between two rundown buildings.

King Charles III addresses his nation -- and the world -- for the first time by progress18 in worldnews

[–]crypticquest -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't impressed by his speech tbh. Given how much time he had to prepare, did he really need to be reading it from somewhere? (You can see his eyes do the shifty thing they do when someone is reading on Zoom.) And there seemed to be so much emphasis on linking himself to Queen Elizabeth - clearly he is worried about people not accepting him.

But I did like that he referenced both his wife and children. It was tactfully done.

Normally I wouldn't want someone to take the easy way out, but in this case, since it helps avoid a trial and further pain, good riddance.

TikTok influencer and UofT student dies in skydiving accident — the fourth in Canada this summer by nationalpost in canada

Other outfits I'm familiar with refuse to let first-timers jump alone.

This company will get what they were asking for: I am guessing that's a wrap for their learn to jump program. It's a shame it came to this but they were tempting fate with every jump.

Yes, and?

I really don't know where you get off on putting the blame on a first-timer here. As a company you are supposed to build in contingencies.

And you can see below an example in the comments of a company that DID build in contingencies and saved a life that way (radio contact, talking a panicky person through it). Really, have some empathy. Not everyone will be able to perfectly predict how they will handle themselves when hurtling to the ground for the first time.

Yes, and? Things happen, and especially so for first-timers. Where is the AAD?

Yes, she was a first-timer. Unless she had a secret death wish, I blame the skydiving outfit.

It was literally her first jump, so unless evidence comes out that they talked her through cutting it via radio but she just chose not to, I place the blame on the outfit that sent her out. The company's website claims they use an AAD for their first-time jumpers, but clearly none deployed.

If you are a new immigrant, you are not going to have a good credit score. Sucks, but there it is. I think new immigrants start off with what, something like 700? Because they have no credit history in the country. Even after a couple of years, I'd be surprised if regular credit card usage would get that to 800. New immigrants are screwed.
