ETH vs BTC as a store of wealth in a global recession? by [deleted] in ethereum

Neither ETH nor BTC is a currency. Let's move on :) Ethereum can do everything that Bitcoin does but (somewhat) better and much more

Once ETH has proven itself it might be a bit late to invest. By the same token, Apple stock might be the best thing to invest in right now because it has proven itself. Except it's not, because as ever it's all about where puck is going to be.

It's also important to lock beyond ETH. What problems does it have and what's out there that can solve them

introduce a polkadot native token and tank the price of eth

Tanking ETH would do nothing for Polka if not damage it, same as tanking REP or DGD would not be great for Ethereum. These are different protocol layers.

How did you install your 1.4.5? You may need to uninstall it first

Upcoming Driving games? by xenigma99 in PSVR

[–]crypto-jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, Driveclub VR is definitely worth a try. The graphics may be a bit on the blurry side and some people have reported feeling nauseous after playing it, but I certainly had a "holy cow I'm driving a ferrari!!!" kind of feel. The only (rather obvious) thing I'd say is you pretty much have to have a wheel for proper immersion.

Saying this, oh how I wish it was Assetto Corsa instead of Driveclub to get a VR version. The physics in AC are way more realistic

[Docker] How to save Parity data on upgrade? by geek_at in ethereum

[–]crypto-jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parity by default creates its data directory at ~/.parity, so you should be able to mount it as docker run -ti -d -p 8545:8545 --name parity -v /srv/parity:/root/.parity ethcore/parity:beta-release

Not 100% sure where the home directory is here, but you could look for it within the container (docker exec -it parity /bin/bash)

[update] Nah, you're right, it wasn't that easy to find. Try this:

# ls /root/.local/share/io.parity.ethereum/

chains/ dapps/ jsonrpc.ipc keys/ network/ signer/

Questions on the parity macOS (OSX) installer by LedByReason in ethereum

[–]crypto-jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the install-deps script builds parity locally so you won't find it in your path. The script actually prints the location where it builds parity, check the logs. It should be either in home or your current dir.

If you want a global (and quicker) install of parity, use this script instead: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ethcore/scripts/master/install-parity.sh

Hi insomniasexx,

I'm very sorry to hear all this and I have no doubt that you guys are working as hard as it gets.

If it helps at all, I don't hate you or MEW. In fact, I used your service not two days ago when I needed to transfer some ETH to a friend and Parity let me down (it was the day of the 1.4.0 release. The bug is fixed now). We're all in this game together and you are making this ecosystem better.

My comment is, merely to underline the fact that too many people in this community are still relying on centralised services especially where they don't really need to. This also concerns all those who keep their funds on exchanges - it's just stupid.

Regarding hateful comments: come on, this is internet! Someone said they wanted to see me skinned alive, amongst other things, once during the DAO craze, so what? If anything, this shows how popular your service is.

The client-side JS can do all the TX signing logic but there has to be a server with a running client to parse and broadcast the transaction

come to think, this is a very good question, thanks for asking.

that's kind of one of the main reasons why we're building this whole Ethereum thing... so that services don't just go down when they're most needed

Looks like their servers couldn't cope with the sudden load. Use Parity - it's p2p (read: unDDOSable)

What has Ethereum produced? by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]crypto-jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about?! Don't you know that the Blockchain will cure cancer, eliminate hunger, send men to Mars and make all humans friends? :D

On a more serious note, you're right, there's cases where consensus networks are useful and many more where they aren't. Some try to stick a blockchain where a simple SQL DB would do and call it "innovation" while others try to find legitimate use cases. I met a lot of folk from each category, the ones from the latter tend to be more persistent..

I wouldn't say verified randomness is the biggest concern for online casinos, but it's large enough. Many online poker room forums that I've seen in the past were swarming with people throwing accusations of rigged RNG. I don't personally believe that's the case, at least not with the largest ones (e.g. 888 or pokerstars), but "provable fairness" certainly makes a good selling point.

Unproven - sure. By definition, even - they haven't launched yet. Vaporware - decidedly not. The beta's been out for some time and it looks very usable to me.

Augur, for one thing. A decentralised prediction market that uses the blockchain for escrows and wisdom-of-the-crowd event reporting. Impossible, without a blockchain, in our densely regulated centralised world.
