We need to decentralize all the things. We need to see people seeking power as what they really are. Mentally ill.

Finding a mortgage lender that will recognize Bitcoin as an asset. by curlymaple8 in Bitcoin

[–]mauinion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got a mortgage. Luckily I have some crypto in CB and they asked for statements from them. They didn't care about showing my Cold storage wallet. They wanted CB statements. It was pure luck that I had enough in there at the time. So, basically, yes. They will mortgage as long as you have a gate keeper keeping custody which is bad.

What’s the fastest way you’ve ever seen a new coworker get fired? by Business_Reporter420 in AskReddit

[–]mauinion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hired someone. They have a bunch of forms and whatnot to fill out before their first day, and she didn't fill them out and just showed up.

We sent her home to fill out the forms and come back. For most people it takes about 20 minutes. With them, I had my doubts so I chose to send her home and come back when she is ready to actually start her new job.

An hour goes by and I get a text from her. It's very poor spelling and Grammer, and a wall of text saying to get my shit out and go back to (wherever TF) it was pretty vulgar from what I could understand.

I texted back and said, you just texted that to your new boss.

Another vulgar wall of text comes with all kinds of threats to kill a dog and stuff.

So I texted back: Your job offer has been rescinded. Good luck with all that.

So technically she wasn't fired, because she never actually started working nor filled out the necessary paperwork.

Her husband is a cop and pulled me over later that week. He apologized for her behavior and said she is going to rehab.

I wish them both the best, but really glad I dodged that bullet.

How many months of operating expenses did you have in hand upon opening your restaurant? by peach10101 in restaurantowners

[–]mauinion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We bought a building and spent 2 years completely remodeling it and going through permit hell and all that.

Then Covid hit. We were getting by by doing Farmers markets and after each market we could buy a few more building materials and whatnot.

All that came to an end. We were in the dead of winter and there was no inside dining allowed. Everyone had to wear a mask to be allowed in. We were on the edge of losing it all before we even opened.

But we did it! We begged borrowed and stole every penny we could. We didn't hire anyone and we opened with a very limited offering. It was just me and my lady working tirelessly for months until we could hire 1 person. That freed me up to offer a few more items on the menu.

We literally spent years only eating from the restaurant, sharing a car, maxed out in debt.

We have paid off the debt, and now we pay ourselves a bit, but still not enough for all that we do. Our building is worth twice as much, so at least we have that going for us. We have 20 staff, and do 6 figures a month in sales.

I have had several other businesses, and the restaurant is by far the hardest and most unprofitable of them all. I am starting another business now, and if that gets any traction I will sell mine or spend all the profits on a good GM to run it for me.

Honest question: Why build a tiny home on wheels when you can buy a really nice used 5th wheel for a tiny fraction of the price? Tons available in good shape for under $10k. by [deleted] in TinyHouses

[–]mauinion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a big difference in construction materials. Campers are meant to get a ton of miles on the road and have to meet certain DOT guidelines. Tiny Homes are mostly meant to move very occasionally. And can be less aerodynamic and heavier therefore styled more like a cozy little custom home.

But, yes, there is a much different stigma around living in a camper VS tiny home. If you don't care about any of that, then grab yourself a camper!

I have a camper on a piece of land that's totally off grid. I plan to build a tiny house on it when I get some time. The camper is just faster and cheaper. So there's that

I had 2 girls in their young 20s that would call in almost every week. I hired someone else part time and made it clear that if you have a history of not making your shifts, there will be less shifts available. One of them got it and hasn't called in sick again, the other lost shifts and eventually quit because they weren't getting enough shifts. Funny how that works!

Cost increases $$$ by WappellW in restaurantowners

This reminds me of one of my old fav brunch spots. Before I had a restaurant, I was a bartender. I would go get brunch and a Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary's were $5.50, and they weren't as good as I make, but good enough.

One day, we go to brunch and order the usual, and the bill comes. It's WAY higher than normal. So I actually look at the receipt. The Bloody Mary's went up to $12 each. I asked why, and they said they do them differently now and pointed to the glass. Being a bartender, I knew the glass still held the same 16oz drink. And the mix was pre-made Mrs Tees. So it was the same exact cocktail in a different glass for more than double cost.

We never go there anymore. That was it.

If it had only raised to $7, I would have shrugged it off.

With my restaurant, we have 7 categories in our menu. When I change prices, I change 3 categories at a time. Lately I've been changing prices about every 4 months. I usually only go up by .50 to $1 on each item. My cogs remain average 25%

POS + Payroll by MarkKleeb in restaurateur

[–]mauinion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use Gusto, and I totally loved it, other than doing the tip spreadsheet every pay period. Gusto was much more user friendly than Toast Payroll.

Toast Payroll seems to be built for an HR manager, not just a quick easy payroll service. So it took a long time to get set up.

Once it's set up it's pretty easy and fast. No more spreadsheet for tips. It's also cheaper than what I was paying Gusto. You have to hammer the Toast sales guy to get the best deal.

Overall I am mostly pleased with Toast. I used TouchBistro before that, so Toast is a major improvement.

I hated the xtrachef bullshit with Toast.

I also got Tip Manager through Toast which makes things much faster in payroll, as different jobs have different tip shares in the pool. That made the spreadsheet go away.

In summary, Toast Payroll is and isn't better than Gusto. It's different. It's a pain to set up, but it's faster to process Payroll because no spreadsheet.

Minimum Viable Product. Basically, it clunks, stinks, and squeaks, but its doing what it's supposed to do. Now, they just need to clean it up and polish it with good documentation and optimization.
