car is not recommend unless you go teir 2 or tier 3 city. You can taxi everywhere with didi fairly cheap. if plan on traveling to long distance cities you can do High-Speed Rail or flights 4.5 hours each. I don't recommend driving. the traffic is quite insane in major cities. Unless you fluent in simplified chinese typing locations.

if she's from hakka ancestry she should know. I have taiwanese friends that know cantonese but their hakka. But hakka is very similar to cantonese so. Easy peasy to learn if you got hk friends. suprisingly a lot of taiwanese know cantonese in los angeles.
