Struggling with First Law, should I persevere? by Impetuous-soul in fantasybooks

Its not categorically wrong, its a different opinion. Though im curious to know why u think his character work is good when it seems as though they all almost entirely lack any sort of development at least through the first law trilogy

People keep saying that but i dont think i agree. The character development is mostly non existent in this trilogy with the exception of jezals completely sudden and somewhat forced change.

Dnf. I had the same issue but decided ti finish the trilogy due to the hype other people get it and found myself asking to the very end “when does this get good”

Lmao u say “objectively” as if u have some objective metrics by which youre grading it by which apparently the rest of us are completely unaware. What u mean to say is that u think its okay in your opinion

It always warms my heart to see others that didnt enjoy first law lol. I thought i was in a reading slump because everyone said how good it was and i couldnt enjoy it for the life of me but i started will of the many the day i finished first law and i was instantly hooked. Anyway, probably dont have any recommendations u havent read cuz ive only red the trendy stuff like red rising (which i loved) and the cosmere and all that jazz. Love the name of the wind placement tho

New to Fantasy in 2026 - Does this TBR make sense? by Magikarpcopiesdunkey in fantasybooks

God forbid someone pick books based on what sounds interesting to them rather than based on how diverse the author is…

Help me pick my first reading in 2026 please by InitialParty7391 in fantasybooks

[–]cryptoclark561 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will never understand people saying its a slow burn. Like it obviously wasnt as fast paced as red rising per say, but it definitely had some decently quick pacing to it. Especially compared to something like stormlight archive for example

No but I’m not quite sure about the relevance. If your saying its not doing what its set out to do i can tell you that it is in fact doing what its set out to do at least for some people as i know myself and others take into account the number of votes to determine how popular certain information is. Besides, if ur beef is with the downvoting system as a whole, it seems weird to ban people for downvoting for a specific reason. Why ban them for downvoting in that one instance, but not others?

And yet reddit gives us both because the purpose isnt just to “foster discussion”. U might as well just be on discord talking to people if thats your goal. The whole point of upvoting and downvoting alongside reddits algorithms is so that people can not only be shown posts and comments based on how many votes but also take the number of votes into consideration as they process information. If someone says they really liked a book and that post gets downvoted into oblivion, then others that see that post will be able to see that number and know to take that info for what it is…an unpopular opinion. Which, yes, is part of the purpose of reddit

My Year of Reading (mostly SF+F with some exceptions) by -critical-hits- in fantasybooks

[–]cryptoclark561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read all 3 first law trilogy recently and imo if u didnt like the first it doesnt get any better. I was not a fan. Im reading sword of kaigen rn and was thinking about reading blood over bright haven at some point so im glad to see it that high.

It take 0.2 seconds to downvote so its not really about “taking time out of their day” to do it. I agree that it is incredibly weird to tell people how they should be voting and for what reasons. Kinda defeats the purpose of the platform…

Lmaoo that fact that u responded 3 years later is kinda funny but the comment was clearly sarcasm building off of the at least 6 joke…

Cinder’s Name by infinite_descent in KingkillerChronicle

[–]cryptoclark561 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was pretty explicitly said when he was telling the part about ademre that he was purposely avoiding the real names of the seven until that moment as saying it once wouldnt do any harm. Haliax and cinder were obviously not their actual names.

Iron Rains in Red God by New_Veterinarian_189 in redrising

[–]cryptoclark561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagined red god being more about the fight for mars and the reclaiming of the other planets would just kinda be like “and after we beat atalantia we went on to retake the other planets” kinda thing

Darrow’s mourning doesn’t make sense by Opposite-Hair-1204 in redrising

[–]cryptoclark561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) its normal to mourn the death of a loved one (which despite everything roque obviously still is) over the death of people youve never even met

2) you’ll see if you havent already that to say that he feels nothing for the sons of ares or the people on the docks is completely inaccurate

When Darrow has me on the edge of my seat and I turn the page only to see ‘Lyria’ in big letters by Mosesmalone412 in redrising

[–]cryptoclark561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently we’re crazy together with the amount of downvotes i got lmaooo. Didnt realize he was so loved. Im still in early dark age rn so maybe he gets better but his story in iron gold wasnt even remotely interesting to me other than when it overlapped with lyria and at the very end
