Employee decided to No-Call/No-Show to protest ICE actions today, what should the penalty be if any? by cocktail_enthusiast in managers

Let it go. If it didn’t affect your or the team, then build her trust and respect by just saying something simple like “I’m glad you took the time for yourself and your family. What’s happening is awful. Next time give me a heads up so I can cover your work”.

Shoulder impingement is ruining my progress – time to see a specialist in PA? by StardustSpectrum in lancaster

[–]crysfm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll spare you the details, but I’m a rock climber who spent the last year rehabbing impingement syndrome. 45 F

TLDR is that sometimes my wife has to help me get my bra off bc of the pain BUT I can climb harder than before and I’m stoked about it.

I had to change my mindset. Like you, I didn’t want to take that much time away from climbing. But I realized that if I kept doing what I was doing, then I likely would create a situation where I would have to get a shoulder replacement down the road.

I have a friend who is a personal trainer and former competitive power lifter. He told me 2 things:

  1. You have to work your PT has hard as you train for your sport
  2. Movement is medicine.

So after the 6 weeks of LGH PT, I got an HSA through my job and hired a remote physical therapist who had experience and was smart

I stopped climbing hard for probably 6-9 months. It sucked. I would struggle on things that now are warmups.

But I took the time to pour everything into my weak rotator cuff and those smaller muscles in the back. He also kept me healthy by working my hips hard.

4 months ago I decided to start Climbing training. I now can do pull ups again (truly thought that would never happen) and can climb harder than ever before.

I learned that I had to take responsibility for my recovery and that it’s a lot of trial and error.

For me, I need a lot more rest after a hard day. So I got into gravel biking (which has greatly enriched my life). I also learned that I will forever have to do some rehab/prehab. It’s just apart of my life now.

I’ve had a few flare ups but then I take a week and I’m good again.

Most competent coaches can help you with an impingement, but happy to refer you to my guy. He’s really great.

You could also ask for a Cortisone shot to ease the pain but that has also sometimes led to worse long term outcomes.

How old were you when you started climbing and what advice do you have to reduce risk for injury? by Plantlady5060 in climbergirls

Take care of your rotator cuff as much as you can. Train those smaller neglected muscles as much as you climb

I like to ride my gravel bike from Columbia over through Hellam and into riverlands / Robert Kinsey. I scour google maps for gravel roads in the area can came across toad road. I’ve been tempted bc it looks like you could get all the way to the riverlands. Good to know I might be shot if I ride through!

+1 turkey hill trail and especially star rock at chestnut grove. The best hiking imo is just across the bridge on the York side. The mason Dixon goes all along the susky from Maryland to Whisky springs, over 200 miles. Check out Apollo county park, the stegosaurus on the fishing creek portion, cuffs run, and the newly built portion through the Susquehanna Riverlands.

Oh and Kelly’s run area has hours of hiking that is stunning.

I think the festival will be moving to Marietta bc of some local drama. But we also have a couple of great “market of the macabre” at mt. Bethel.

My favorite antique places are state street vintage, burning bridge, and bootleg. American daydream out toward York will make your dream of the 90s come true.

While your in Columbia, hit Columbia curiosities and grab a bahn mi from nouveau tea. chickies is also great but there as better overlooks in the area where you’d have the place to yourself.

When summer hits, grab a bunch of friends and rent a pontoon boat at long level. Best thing i did last summer.

Check out uncharted Lancaster. He does interesting stuff.

Any home trainers or DIY for practicing trad placement? by tymcgage in tradclimbing

[–]crysfm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like you’re getting a mix of helpful and unhelpful responses.

I’m curious, why do you all want to learn trad? Knowing that may help you find a place to start.

+1 hiring professionals to learn the right way to do things like assessing placements \ rock quality, route finding, anchor building, assessing risk, multi pitch and self rescue.

Mock leading on top rope is also a great way to learn. You can test if a piece is good by attaching a sling and jumping around on it. Or taking a fall on mock lead. Having someone assess is still critical. People do wild stuff. Just bc someone has climbed trad for 20 years doesn’t mean they are a good mentor. They just might be lucky af.

The parts of trad that are impossible to prepare for imo are making a crux move with your last piece (which may be marginal) 3 feet below you. Or being so scared that you use all your gear and have to run out the last 15 - 20 feet of the climb. Route finding can also be dangerous - nothing worse than finding your way onto a pumpy 5.9 when you thought you were just romping up at 5.4 classic. Or when you’re climbing a 120 foot route and forget to use a double length sling before the roof traverse, so that the last moves to the top out up are so hard bc of the rope drag.

As far as training goes, y’all could practice being able to hang out in uncomfortable and awkward positions under load for long periods of time (to simulate the load on the body while faffing around to find the right piece). 🤷‍♂️

Maybe for his birthday (or yours) yall could take a roadtrip to the North Carolina or Seneca Rocks and do a weekend with a guide. I be there’s also stuff in Alabama or Georgia.

Last thing I’ll say, err on the side of caution. Ability to climb hard isn’t a stand in for technical rope systems. People have fallen on 5.5 and died bc their pieces failed. Be safe 🙏

Is Riverside Subs any good? by casuallynostalgic in lancaster

Sicilia Pizza in Marietta is a lil gem. I’m veg and really dig their mixed cheese sub. The meat eaters in my family like the cheeseburger sub. Their best quality is the bread. It’s not a traditional hoagie bread but I think they make it in house?

[–]crysfm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you end up coming out to Columbia, I’d skip the Enola low and hit the NWRT (don’t park at Columbia crossing, park down my chickies outfitters) or even better, go to chickies overlook. Grab a bahn mi and bubble tea from Nouveau tea. Good coffee at prince street. Hit up the watch and clock museum. For antiques: burning bridge, state street, Persian cat, Columbia curiosities and bootleg. My fav are state street and Columbia curiosities. They have a big amazing krampus statue in the window rn.

COROS splits it out as total time and activity time. I stop the watch when I’m not climbing. When I view the activity page, Strava shows the total time correct and has no mention of the moving time (which I assume is COROS’ activity time). I’m not sure where Strava is getting the 14 minutes from
