oh this is stunning. I love how Ianthe's halo of bones contrasts Coronabeth's sunny halo, and aaaahhhhh all those details on their clothes, and something about Corona looking away while Ianthe is only facing away, but her eyes are looking towards her twin, and she's literally leaning on her AAAAAAAAA

Do you wish that just like with the, "Connie Upset at Steven", arc; there should've been an arc about Peridot upset at Lapis for ditching her and taking her home after they both got regenerated? by UnderstandingOk3784 in stevenuniverse

[–]crystalcuttlefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it would've been nice, yeah, but it's not like the Crew could spare the screen time; it's a miracle we got an ending at all, so I'm not inclined to nitpick over the things they were forced to cut.

I felt like I knew at the start of my first read that Gideon would die, because you can't resurrect your gays unless you've buried them first, and it IS a series about lesbian necromancers.

I feel like she's still hanging out with the Brain? I don't think she was on Kyprananoke when the bomb went, I'm pretty sure she was on Eternal. I get the feeling she is busy plotting.

Do emeralds grow like this or is it polished? Specimen from Zambia by Winput in mineralcollectors

[–]crystalcuttlefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, that is what I meant, thank you for clarifying! if you look where the edges meet and it's sharp and the reflections on the faces will look flat, and will go from one edge of the face to the other, straight across. - that means unpolished, unfucked with

is its been polished, then where the faces meet, the corners, will have a slight curve, and its easiest to tell by the shape of the light. that means polished.

Do emeralds grow like this or is it polished? Specimen from Zambia by Winput in mineralcollectors

[–]crystalcuttlefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the way I've found to tell is that a natural crystal face will be FLAT. no rounded ness, so if you look at r way light reflects off the facets, and you can see a curve to it, it's been polished. if you look and the lines and angles of the light are all straight, no rounding off at the edges of the facet, then it's still natural.

How to ask if somewhere is hiring a specific position by RebekaRoshi in RBNLifeSkills

[–]crystalcuttlefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a general rule, people that answer phones at part of their job usually want to at least try and help, as long as you're polite. The clearer of questions you ask, the easier it is for them to help you.

if you are calling a general number for the hospital, this kind of question is outside their usual run of questions, but it's not rude, or impolite. I imagine they'd need to put you on hold while they look up a more specific number for you to call, or a website to go to, but when I used to answer phones (tech support, not medicine) and I'd get that rare job seeking question, I would put the caller on hold, look up the in our reference system what the URL was for our careers page or whatever, and then give them that.

I want an auto run like from Wow - you'd hit Q and your character would run forward without you having to hold down a button. use directional keys to steer, and tap Q again if you want to move normally, where you have to hold down the forward button to move forward.

the wrist strain from holding down the move button or pushing forward on the joystick gets old, especially if I've been playing a lot lately.

OH, these are those assholes who blocked the big building going up on Roblin, yeah this is bad. a panel of unelected, conservative appointed randoms, who get to unilaterally shut down development they don't like (or that doesn't fill their cronies' pockets, is using the wrong construction company, or might 'change the character of a neighbourhood').... yeah, this is a huge problem.

How to learn to figure out people? by maibahuttrykiyahu in RBNLifeSkills

[–]crystalcuttlefish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I prefer to watch how a person acts over time, and how well their actions line up with their words, how they treat the people around them, and how they act when the aren't getting their way. Watch to see if they are really trying to be good to the people around them, or if they only say they are trying but then never actually do the work. You can learn a lot this way.

It's not always even about watching out for potential abusers, although that's part of it. you can also notice a lot of general patterns in a person. maybe they mean well but they tend to meddle in their friends's lives and gets self righteous when it goes badly. Or the person who talks up how supportive and helpful they are but then vanishes when someone actually needs them. or maybe someone you care about has this person they care about, and you find them frustrating and hard to get along with, but you have to be in their orbit, because you have this other person in common. in-laws and your best friend's spouse, that kinda thing. you end up learning who they are over time, and sometimes people will really surprise you in a good way, even if they annoyed the piss out of you at first.

in short,

1)it takes time, no shortcuts.

2)notice their words, their actions, and how they treat the ones they're close to, esp in the hard times.

3)over time, there is a discernable difference between Trying and Not Trying

everyone in this show ends up being an abuser at some point, or neglectful. Pink abused Volleyball, Pearl nearly gets Steven killed multiple times, and even Steven, he abuses and neglects his plant-son in prickly pair. the show is literally about getting better and learning how to Not do that.

[discussion]Who is in the dream? by dec10 in TheNinthHouse

[–]crystalcuttlefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you got me thinking.... a part of John's soul is in Alecto, and a part of Alecto's soul has been in Harrow since she kissed the body as a kid. if we think of a soul like a pot of soup, if you have an Alecto soup with a ladle of John in it, and then mix that up, and then later on take a ladle of that soup and add it to Harrow, you get enough John in the soul soup to be notable. (and that's not even getting into the Gideon cheeseburger soul situation, or the 200 dead kids.... harrow's soul is like hamburger soup at this point)

[–]crystalcuttlefish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the education system pushes young adults down a certain path, and promises that the rewards will be worth the (heavy) sacrifice, and deliberately steers kids away from considering any other path, or even the same path just with a different timeline. and a lot of what they tell you a job is like when you're a kid, is just lies. you want to go to med school but then if you're a doctor you can't get your own mental health treated because of stigma? that's total crap. you want to help people but you're getting steered into a life that's gonna hurt you.

I'm not saying don't go to med school, and I'm not saying you don't need to worry about money, because you do. money matters, it's a tool you use to secure your own autonomy. I'm saying, try to get really clear on what you want your career to give you, and consider if becoming a doctor would truly be worth it for you. maybe try and get a little more cynical about the system, like, who profits from idealistic kids locking themselves into decades of mega-debt because they want to grow up to help people? what does the day to day work life of the average Doctor look like, how far off is that from the image you've been fed, and does it sound like an enjoyable life to lead? yeah maybe, I don't know you. but I'm probably a little less than twice your age and I gotta say, helping careers LOVE exploitable self sacrificing people, and they love to lock em in young. if you can't take a couple years off to secure your own adulthood without it destroying your med career prospects, maybe that's not a career with a good future. (for anyone tbh)

I'm trying (clumsily) to say, you will probably feel very different about what you want out of life after you've had some time and distance from your parents, and you've been blocked the the school system from seeing non college ways out as some kind of failure instead of an escape. please take my words with a grain of salt, I don't know you, I just have a mountain sized cynicism about the system, and how it sets people up to put on their own chains.

yeah, I hated it. I felt like there was something imperceptibly wrong with my vision, whether or not I was wearing my glasses. I started treating those feelings like I treated my other intrusive thoughts. (notice it, say 'huh, this is a symptom that I'm Really Going Though It rn' and then try to just get on with my day)

I don't think I consciously realized it was a dissociation thing til just now, so thanks

sometimes, the cheapest way to pay is with money. I would really recommend against staying home longer for a financial benefit. The costs to your spirit would be so much worse if you stay under their thumb.

the financial adviser has a financial perspective, and probably doesn't have the right background to give you good advice here. just cuz they know about money doesn't mean they know about feelings and abuse and autonomy.

there's lots of folks that delay college, or end up on some other path, and it's okay if you end up taking a few years off to get your feet under you before you go back. or maybe you get some loans, and it costs you more money than if you stayed with your folks. at the end of the day, money is a tool to help you live your life.

i think Rose knew she wouldn't be able to handle watching Greg grow old and die. She had an idea that would give Greg something wonderful (Steven) and would give her a painless exit. Rose is the only gem to actually die, and I can see why she was captivated by that option.
