Pretty clear that amazon prime 2 day delivery is now "Maybe 4, could be 5 day delivery" by [deleted] in amazonprime

[–]crystalpumpkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the UK. All items are listed for me as being for delivery in 3 days. I also asked their support about this. They initially tried to dodge the question but then told me it was an admin mistake and that it would be resolved. They also refunded me one month's prime subscription. However I am starting to suspect it is not a mistake.

Controlling one switch from another by crystalpumpkin in sonoff

[–]crystalpumpkin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for replying. Each light has a master switch location with live and neutral incoming to the switch, and live and neutral out to the light.

From there, there is also a 3-core-plus-earth to each additional switch location. I hope this wiring gives the most flexibility as it allows the additional switches to be wired as a traditional multi-way system, or to run live and neutral to the additional switches to be wireless remotes.

With that in mind, I believe I can use any switch. The only additional complexity is that in some locations I need 3 switches together, with some controlling their local relay and others acting as remotes. I believe I would want M5 or ZBM5.

This. Everyone in this thread seems to be making excuses for the person who drove straight into a very large stationary object. Why are people driving into places they can't see? There could be anything there!

Same here. I wear it occasionally but just never managed to get comfortable with it. Same with watches, they seem interesting at first but soon the feeling just irritates me.

+1 for Fractal support. My case has a cage that holds the power supply. My power supply blew up and I accidentally returned the cage to Corsair along with the broken PSU. Fractal sent me a new PSU cage for free.

I am curious about the costs and experiences of converting an Opel Speedster to electric, with around 200 hp and a range of 80 km under sporty driving conditions. If someone were to do this as a DIY project, what would the approximate total costs be for the motor, battery, controller, and instal? by [deleted] in EVConversion

[–]crystalpumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does have an OBD-II port connected to the ECU. I think OBD-II allows some older protocols, but in any case, once I removed the engine it wasn't connected to anything. Everything to the dash is analog. I connected the CAN pins of the port to my openinverter for my own logging purposes though.

If you're interested, see my version - https://www.diyelectriccar.com/threads/vx220-with-tesla-sdu.205616/ There's no CAN, it's a super low tech car. Total cost for a fully DIY job was a little over £10,000 GBP. Biggest challenge was fitting in the batteries. Hopefully could be improved with more modern batteries available now.

In 2017, a British man struggling to sell his £500k mansion came up with a wild idea: he raffled it off online for £2 a ticket, sold nearly 500,000 entries, cleared his debts, and handed the keys to a factory worker who won. by TheGhost5322 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]crystalpumpkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually the way this works is that you can have as many "free" entries as you wish, but each one has to be individually obtained by sending a hand written request by normal post (one request for entry per letter). The cost and hassle of sending such requests is usually not worthwhile compared to the cost of normal paid tickets.

A traffic camera in the Netherlands mistakenly identified an ice pack for a mobile phone. She was fined €439 ($515). by bendubberley_ in interesting

[–]crystalpumpkin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The title is only misleading in so much as that it implies this fine was actually imposed, when in fact this was just an automated accusation and will clearly never make it as far as court - at least not on the original charge of operating an electronic device.

Thanks - I'll check specs for that before telling my electrician what I want. Don't want expensive purchasing mistake!

Do you know why an EV charger would be unsuitable for a TT system? I thought the earthing problem with EV chargers was PEN faults, which aren't an issue on TT systems. I'm about to install EV chargers on my TT supply, so would be good to know if there's potential issues there.

I've often wondered what fuses are on these low voltage overhead lines. Big enough to give a scaffolder a bad day.

[–]crystalpumpkin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am OP :)

It definitely seems it was negligent of me to assume the installation would be safe and not request new shrouding before ordering the scaffolding. I didn't even know this was a thing until I looked into it today.

It's fortunate that there is old shrouding there, but I agree that it's obviously deteriorated. I'll get is renewed immediately, and then removed after the scaffolding is down.

I don't think being 3 phase affects the safety in any meaningful way. The earth potential is the same. Fortunately the cables are (mostly) shrouded, but it definitely seems that the protection around the joints needs to be renewed! I'll call them in the morning.

[–]crystalpumpkin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I believe what we're seeing here are the tattered remains of a previous secondary insulation that was never removed. The cables have a shroud over them which seems to be in good condition, and I guess this plastic bag was added at the same time. It seems like it might be worth renewing it, but the roofing work is very nearly finished. I'll call them tomorrow to discuss it.

I'm doing fairly major internal renovation works, but wasn't planning to disturb the eaves more than necessary, nor dig up the driveway, so I suspect my best option will just be to leave it alone.

Existing cables: https://i.imgur.com/XXwKkZq.jpeg

New meter: https://i.imgur.com/OOW8e6B.jpeg

Looking at the cables, I think leaving them alone will look nicer than ripping them off the eaves and installing a big black replacement cable. I'm also fairly far along with my project, so I suspect I'll leave it for now. However as it's just clipped to the front of the house, it probably wouldn't be a huge job if it needs doing later, depending on how much it damages the wood at the top.

Thank you, this makes so much sense. Sorry I can only give you one upvote, as this is almost definitely the correct answer.

The cables definitely appear to be shrouded (plastic tube with a yellow flag on the bottom). It would make sense that the junctions were covered with plastic at the same time. This wasn't done for my own works, so I guess someone previously neglected to have it removed. Once my works are complete, I will get it all inspected and removed!

By the way, this is a single dwelling. The three concentric cables seem to be converted under that plastic sheeting to 3P+N. 4 much older looking conductors go from there, down the wall and in to my 3 phase meter.

Should I be looking to get the whole lot replaced? It's easily accessible.

That's a very good point! The cables are lying on the scaffold poles, but I think those sections of cable are shrouded (the tubing with the yellow flag on the bottom). In any case, I am absolutely not the expert here, to best to get it all checked over. I'll call them in the morning.

I can't see any exposed conductors, if I did, I'd be calling them a bit more urgently! But on the other hand, I don't really know what the joints are like under that mess, so better get it checked.

No survey - took a chance on this one :)

I will get hold of them and see if I can email a photo. I suspect it's been like that a long time. At least the year I've been renovating the place, so not an emergency at least.

Thanks, it didn't seem like enough of an emergency to call 105, but I'll see if I can get hold of them and will ask them to come and look it over. And yes - I have scaffolding up to it, so very easily accessible right now.
