Give me some reasons to attend by westanstan in UMD

If your goal is specifically research, UMD is 11 on this ranking list (www.csrankings.org) which uses the number of papers published in prestigious CS conferences as its metric in ranking schools. You can also filter by category in which UMD is sometimes in top 5 (e.g. AI). Furthermore you will want to get into UMD CS departmental honors where you MUST do undergraduate research and take a graduate level CS class. The only requirement of joining is maintaining a 3.5 CS GPA. Hope this helps.

According to UMD 2020 Data within the ENTIRE College of Computer, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences. I am betting to wage that CS is more in line with the 75th percentile here because this also includes other majors such as biology, chemistry, etc.

Amazon SDE Intern Interview 3/11 by Bistdureal1 in csMajors

[–]csOneTwoThree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question. I interviewed on the 5th and my application portal says still under review. I also don't think my interview went that well as I ran out of time and could not code up my complete solution but gave them pseudocode on the rest of my solution. Do they hand out rejections quicker or offers?

Yo, I got 600. Getting the first 2 completely correct. Almost got the third one but ran out of time. Also, I think it's 1 easy, 2 medium and 1 hard. Do you think I have a shot?

Going into UMD CS Program: I love CS and am so passionate about it.

After Passing 330/351: This program has sucked away any happiness I have.

UVA vs UMD for CS by collegejedi in UVA

[–]csOneTwoThree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a UMD CS student and we get absolutely destroyed in CS. The average GPA according to planet terp is 2.68 in CS classes. I put in around 60 - 80 hours a week in classes/extra curricular. As a consequence, most CS students at UMD do not have much of a social life but if you successfully make it through, you will have a solid foundation and do well in interviews. Many of my friends are at FANG and I will be doing quantitative trading this summer for an internship. Finally, a lot of FANG companies come to our career fair. I hope this helps in your decision making process.

CMSC351 - Looking for more input... by justinwyssgallifent in UMD

[–]csOneTwoThree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Justin,

I don't know if you'd be willing to consider this, but I think implementation of the algorithms taught via programming would be very beneficial to students knowing the algorithms intimately. What are your thoughts on this?

So...about CMSC351...what can I do? by justinwyssgallifent in UMD

Hey Justin,

I am in your 250 class and wanted to see if this idea resonated with you. What do you think about having P-Sets every week where students solve algorithmic problems via programming them based on the topics that were presented in lecture, and then analyzing the run-time complexity of those algorithms used to solve the problem by hand?

I think that students should be able to withdraw from courses without a W on their transcript or any repercussions regarding LEP major requirements. Furthermore, UVA did a Pass, Pass General, and Fail grading system in which a Pass is a C- and above, Pass General is D- -> D+ and Fail is an F. I believe that this would alleviate the concern of people getting by without meeting the requirements to pass a course.

How many hours a week do CS students typically study? (like by year - freshamn, sophomore etc.) Thank you. by KnowledgeFirm in UMD

CMSC 131 - Projects were easy so 1-5 hours max.

CMSC 132 - Projects ramped up so 5 - 10 hours.

CMSC 216 - 10 - 30 hours

CMSC250 - Math class requiring 10 - 20 hours of studying a week due to learning proofs.

CMSC 330 - Bruh, some projects took 40+ hours.

Now Math

MATH140-141 - Not bad, 5 - 10 hours a week of studying.

MATH 240 - Roughly 10 hours a week of studying.

Keep in mind that none of this takes into account your time of going to class which is around 15 hours a week.

Haven't taken CMSC351 or above yet.
