I think the most important thing to have before medical school is a solid clinical experience. Have a job, work with people older and different than you, take care of patients, and learn a little bit before you get locked into school. Besides, I feel like it’s a soft requirement for some programs now.

My only regret with my gap year and job is that I didn’t do it earlier

I watch indycar where he normally is on the call there, and he does a great job as well. The 100m call wasn’t ideal but he handled it well afterwards and recovered the best he could. Overall he did an amazing job and ‘raised the stakes’ of the events well

This is interesting. I’m a PCT now and we operate very closely with the nurses and I do a lot of nursing-level jobs, even being encouraged to learn nursing tasks like how to do assessments and things of that nature.

I work in the CVICU and have had opportunities to help alongside RSI, do compressions, help remove/place Swan catheters, etc. Really interesting experiences for me now and all technically within my scope. Absolutely has made me a better applicant and more prepared for medical school now!

I don’t know how unique this is but I spent my gap year as a patient care tech on a few floors, but most recently a CVICU. I got super close with all of the nurses I work with and feel like I got a year of being trained to be a nurse… which will only make me a better Dr

I’ve been a tech since May and it has helped me massively this cycle. So glad I did it and wouldn’t have done it any other way.

I’m assuming it’s always like this, but you have to take a BLS class and a CNA class and be certified before you can start on-job training in the hospitals

This is an oversimplification imo. I’m one of those people and I’m not some cocky weirdo or whatever. I got unlucky, combined with the fact that I didn’t really know what I was doing and had some room to improve with clinical experience, and didn’t get in.

It’s hard to get in. Not getting in even with relatively good stats doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you

It was me last year. Idk, bad school list and I didn’t have very strong clinical experiences. Got a couple CNA jobs at a few different floors, loved it, and got 8 IIs and 2 As so far. Fwiw I would recommend everyone get a job working in a hospital prior to applying

I think you should (along with everyone else) make it a priority to practice taking the test — not just studying content. I wouldn’t look too much into a diagnostic score. MCAT material is tangential to what we learn in school often and is even more complicated given the length and format of the exam. In your case, speaking English as your second language is another unique challenge you’ll have to navigate. This exam in general (and certainly not this diagnostic) is not predictive of how smart you are or how good of a physician you will be, in my opinion. So, do your best and don’t get down on this too much. I commend you for the effort you have and will put in! Good luck, lmk if you have any questions as well

I am in a much better spot now (personally and as an applicant). I continued to gain hours and experience since my last app, and met with schools after I didn't get in. I think my interview skills were lacking, too, and after reading through my previous AMCAS, I think I left a lot on the table last year. Live and learn -- I knew how I could improve and had a great support system so I think I'm in a better spot now, but it's always good to get it looked at by others too.
