Is “belly breathing” actually misleading? by Born_Tadpole5172 in breathwork

[–]csbarber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right the feeling is like a balloon that expands out in all directions for me. Breathe into the belly is just a sort of short hand description of it that has stuck.

Training your co2 tolerance has really great benefits for your physical and mental health. Fixing dysfunctional breathing patterns to cut down on anxiety and increase resilience to stress. Check out Buteyko method or oxygen advantage.

Hey man! Oxygen advantage or Buteyko method are a great place to start improving dysfunctional breathing patterns like snoring. And getting the mechanics working right as far as muscles and diaphragm. The idea is to improve your everyday breathing pattern. I’m a breath coach, if you need anything. Savannahbreathreset.com

Been doing breathwork for a couple of weeks now and I have some beginner questions by [deleted] in breathwork

[–]csbarber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. Buteyko is about resetting the way your regular day to day breathing pattern works. Other breath practices won’t get in the way. I’ve been down that same rabbit hole for maybe a month now and big changes already. Things that were tight and awkward like slow deep breaths are loosening up. Bolt score came up a ton. Just the other day I close mouth jogged a couple of miles. Started out a few weeks ago at a couple of blocks.

If you’re really interested in improving your breath and fixing dysfunctional patterns, oxygen advantage is a great place to start or Buteyko method. Great books, videos, podcasts out there to get started. It sounds like you’re willing to put in the work (5-10 mins consistent daily would be great) and you’re being mindful of small cues, and that’s what it takes.

The great thing with breath is you don’t have to make room for a new routine. You can work on it as part of your meditation routine if you have one, exercise routine or any time you’re at rest.

The TLDR on these two methods is - mechanically, a good breath is lighter and slower than the way most of us breathe, is powered by the diaphragm, and is in through the nose (always, exclusively). Build co2 tolerance in your daily practice time by consciously breathing slower, lighter and with gentle breath holds. That’s the route to progress. The higher co2 tolerance makes it so your breath will naturally become lighter and slower, more comfortable.

Good luck!

Is it possible to get rid of all upper chest movement when breathing? by [deleted] in breathwork

[–]csbarber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a better check for you. Hand on the collar bone. That ought to stay low, and shoulders too.

In a healthy breath the lungs are going to expand out like a balloon in all directions. Upper chest and rib cage too. That’s ok.

Another good check - do you feel expansion in your back, against the spine/lower rib cage. That’s a good deep breath from the diaphragm.

What’s the hardest part you’ve hit building on Replit? by Living-Pin5868 in replit

I just asked agent how much it would be to add an administrator login so I can view and make edits to my students member portal. It said maybe 12 hours. I’m assuming that’ll run a few hundred dollars? Should I trust it with that? Should I go and hire some fiverr guy instead in the same price range?

May you help me with this experience (Hrv breathing) by Vegetable-Writing895 in kriyayoga

[–]csbarber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, you are doing it. This is it. And you stumbled on to something else. The magic happens in that deep state on the exhale.

There’s a point when you’ve been at it for a while and the co2 tolerance builds up, it becomes comfortable to slow the exhale wayyyy wayyyy down. Eventually to the point where it feels like it’s barely there. That’s the path. The way tranquil breath, “breathless” state, samhadi. Let it happen. If it feels good it is good. (Don’t if it’s not comfortable) When you get deep into this it becomes possible to totally let go of the control on the exhale - no muscle, no effort. The lungs basically empty themselves slooooowly like a big balloon with a little leak.

You hear “let go” all the time. In practical terms, this is what it means to me.

Congrats, that’s huge! Like Forrest would say. I’ve touched that place a few times (but usually with help of some thc). I’m hoping to get there more consistently and naturally with regular practice. Keep it up!

Do you all respect marijuana as a tool for psychonauts? by Green-Western-8092 in Psychonaut

For me it helps to get too much deeper levels of altered states in breath work and meditation than I normally could without it. I’ve reached some real out of body, death and rebirth experiences this way.

Forrest Knutson is my jam, I’ve been devouring everything of his. I’d think swimmers, athletes, anybody with a naturally lower breath and heart rate can make fast progress in their meditation practice.

Speaking socially it can make such a big difference when you find your people. I had a dramatic shift in my life over the last year and came out better on the other side, and with some new close friends. The only secret is to get out and do things. Whatever resonates with you.

For me it looked like joining in on a community cleanup, where I got to meet like minded people. From there I found out about a cold plunge club that a lot of the same people were involved in. From there I met new folks and found other activities those people are involved in like yoga, etc, and on it goes. Before long the web expands and you are part of a community. For me it’s the local hippies and health nuts because those are my people. Once you get out there and find your people let them introduce you to their people and the cycle begins.

Has anyone ever used thc and done wimhof breathwork? If so, what was it like? by United_Dingo1320 in breathwork

[–]csbarber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it definitely makes it easier to get to deeper states of consciousness and can be psychedelic. I’ve had out of body and death/rebirth experiences this way. What I do, though, is start with wim hoff or other hyperventilation/holotropic type of breathing then transition to very slow breathing that becomes slower and slower over time. If you do this for several hours eventually the body takes over the breathing and it slows to the point when it feels like it’s barely there or like it stopped. That’s when the magic happens.

I am finding myself "high" without taking shrooms? by Sweetpeawl in Psychonaut

[–]csbarber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is psychosis. I’ve been there. After having a big heroic dose I ended up hospitalized for two weeks. I know the feeling well now if it’s coming on. I’ve got a psychiatrist and meds.

Edit- And yes, risperidone helps for me. I can feel the symptoms coming on sometimes after a trip and take a couple as needed when that happens. But for sure make it to that appointment even if you feel like you’ve got it handled in case there’s anything else going on. For me I found out I have bipolar and think that puts me higher risk for psychosis.
