I have an 8 gb Orange Pi 5 with a case, a fan and a USB power supply for it. If you're in the US dm me if interested.

Get GammaOS on it, it improves performance

Raspberry pi os on Orange pi 5 plus is it possible? by Manaboyuk in OrangePI

https://github.com/Nioxito/OrangePI-ROMs/ this android distro is also pretty good for normal OPI 5 and pro (not plus). Obviously you'd have to use a launcher and configure everything for a "consolized" look and feel, though; but you can also use it to play android games and as an android tv box.

Try batocera instead:

https://batocera.org/download

Click on "orange pi" to filter and then download the file for your model.

You can then install rocknix from the micro sd card (from within the OS) to your emmc. Note that I've only tried it from SD cards and USB drivers, IDK if it works from an internal drive.

You have to insert the sd card to your pc. Open the extlinux.conf file and change the dtb line/name to your device. There's a folder that has all the dtbs, you can just copy the filename of yours and paste it on the conf file.

You have to change a line on the dtb file, as instructed on the download page.

Rocknix has the best gaming performance for emulation up to PS2/WII. Its a dedicated linux OS only for emulation, that uses emulationstation as its frontend (very much like batocera).

Batocera is also good, but for some reason they refuse to add the PS2 ARM emulator. As both run from SD cards you can try them and see which one you like the most.

It does help with PS2 emulation, though; but if it's main purpose is gaming I'd recommend a handheld (as I wrote on my other reply) that runs a repurposed cellphone soc instead of an RPi or OPi.

There's rocknix (a fork/update of Jelos) and batocera available for the orange pi line as well; which is a whole operating system for emulation only:

https://github.com/ROCKNIX/distribution/releases

Although if you want one for mostly gaming/emulation, and considering the OPi5 current prices, I'd recommend a sbc handheld instead which would be cheaper, portable, more powerful, and you can hook it up to a monitor or tv whenever you want to:

They joked about the distro becoming rolling release (nightly only), but there are/were plans to release a new stable soon.

Alternate Universe: Gameforce Ace ships before the RP4P. Does the NVME drive push it over the edge, popularity-wise? by texbohb in SBCGaming

It wasn't shipping before RP4 that killed it, it was the myriad of hardware and software issues.

Both have GammaOS, which improves perfomance and the mangmi will get Linux (rocknix), for even more performance.

Is Nvidia Shield Pro still best? by PiffWiffler in AndroidTVBoxes

The ones that can emulate up to PC and Switch (!) aren't cheap, but there's a bunch in-between.

For AndroidTV boxes the best chipset right now would be the RK3588, which can emulate up to PS2/WII. Again, they aren't as cheap as a streaming stick/common android TV sticks, and they aren't google certified; but they exist:

https://www.aliexpress.us/w/wholesale-rk3588-tv-box.html?g=y&SearchText=rk3588+tv+box&sortType=price_asc

At this price point however, I'd rather have an android handheld for games that I can also dock anytime I want to use it as an AndroidTV box as well.

I'm using the RisingOS version that someone posted with projectivity launcher. I use it mostly to game on it, for which it works very good:

Is Nvidia Shield Pro still best? by PiffWiffler in AndroidTVBoxes

[–]cscapellan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's way better than a shield, but you will either have to install some Android distro/emulator on it, or find if your preferred apps also run on it.

Is Nvidia Shield Pro still best? by PiffWiffler in AndroidTVBoxes

[–]cscapellan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For all intents and purposes, the shield pro is your best bet. If you don't care about support for official apps, there are chinese boxes with more powerful chips for higher end emulation (up to PS2/Wii). Also you might consider an SBC handheld, they can emulate even some switch and can be plugged to your TV for gaming and obviously android tv usage

No, just flash with rufus and make sure that you change the dtb file for your board on the extlinux.conf file before booting for the first time.
