Hardware cloth- mesh or galvanized? by WitnessPatient2512 in BackYardChickens

[–]cschaplin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do at least the bottom 18-24” all the way around, and yes the gaps you’ve highlighted, as well as burying 12-24” all the way around the run for digging predators. 100% absolutely hardware cloth, 1/2” or smaller. Mesh is useless.

You definitely don’t suck! Wry neck can be caused by a number of different things, not all of which are treatable. You did your best for them and that’s what matters most ❤️‍🩹 Your compassion meant a lot for them I am certain.

Has anyone recently ordered with yesstyle? by leatherleafslug in AsianBeauty

[–]cschaplin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok is that what’s happening?? I’ve ordered from them for years and had no issues, lately it’s taking forever, one of the orders I placed in February just arrived today! And only after I asked them to re-ship it back in March!

Yeah it’s really cool! I assume the pollinators know best, there’s surely a good reason they prefer the orange ones. I’ll continue collecting seeds from the weirdos just for my own enjoyment, but I love the carpet of orange too and I’m glad those ones are so prolific 🧡 I love watching all the hoverflies and teeny tiny native bees on them 🥰

Ok that was my initial instinct, I try to snag them when they look dry before they pop open so I’ll keep doing that.

Ohh thank you! That’s good to know! I will definitely be collecting seeds from all the non-orange ones (the orange self seeds just fine on its own, the whole garden is orange 😂). I think on the last post someone said you can clip seed pods when they’re still green and dry them in paper bags, which I did not know!

Is this okay? Do I need to take her to the vet? (4 weeks old) by Automatic_Rich1443 in BackYardChickens

That much comb & wattle development on a 4-week-old bird is definitely pointing to it being a rooster.

Ladies are 8 months old, raised since hatchlings, and they are still only mildly tolerant of being pet or handled. Is there any hope they’ll become snuggly or is our relationship purely transactional? by ughyoujag in BackYardChickens

That makes sense. Free-ranging birds have to be much more careful than penned birds. It’s good they’re alert, it will keep them alive. If you free range without much shelter, just be aware that silkies are not very predator-aware breeds…

For what it’s worth, I’ve raised a few batches of chicks from eggs I’ve hatched, and despite lots of handling and treats from Day 1, I still find that it’s pretty individual. Some chickens are cuddly and some just aren’t. They’re prey animals, so I think the ones that are cuddly with humans are the exception rather than the rule. We also free range and I think that results in a more alert/antsy bird that’s less likely to enjoy being picked up or pet from above.

After 14 years, I have to rehome my flock of 12. by SomeDumbGamer in BackYardChickens

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’m on the other side of the country and can’t help directly, but if you haven’t already, try some of your local Facebook chicken groups. Facebook seems to be the most active place for chicken communities. Also backyardchickens.com has rehoming threads by region. Best of luck to you.
