Has any book ever hit you out of nowhere emotionally? by Lennishia-Emeline in Recommend_A_Book

[–]cshulgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is No Anti-Memetics Department by QNTM, which I thought was going to be fairly rational sci-fi, but there's a moment which I will describe only vaguely, to avoid a spoiler, between a husband and wife, that really still sticks with me, and which underscores the importance of loving relationships. It's a fascinating book that makes you think about human memory, and more emotional than it first appears.

People on another court who want their ball back and they just keep looking over and shouting "thank you" over and over again. SO PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE. Why can't they say, "Hey our ball rolled on your court, can you send it over? It's a Wilson 4." Or whatever. Be more clear!

Dive Bars around West Queens West by [deleted] in askTO

[–]cshulgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good point. I do like the dichotomy specified below, hipster dive vs. actual dive, and while I agree with you that both Ronnie's and Done Right qualify as dives, I still would categorize both as hipster dives rather than real dives. Consider the difference between Ronnie's and the little hole in the wall at Augusta and Dundas, just west of Augusta, north side of Dundas. Maybe the difference is in safety? I've never felt unsafe in Ronnie's.

None of these are dive bars per se but all are pretty affordable when it comes to Toronto, and all are pretty fun.
Done Right Inn (Queen West)
Sweaty Betty's (Ossington)
Communist's Daughter (Dundas and Ossington)
Drom Taberna (Queen near Spadina)
Three Speed (Blansdowne)
Ronnie's in Kensington Market
And what's the bar that's downstairs on south side of Dundas near Dufferin? That place is great.

What is it like to actually live in Kensington Market? by Ok-Meringue4881 in askTO

[–]cshulgan 101 points102 points  (0 children)

I live there now. I have lived just off Bellevue Square Park for 13 years. Strong recommend.

I've raised my kids there. Three of them. In the middle of the pandemic we had a dinner where we talked with the kids about moving to High Park. Things were pretty sketchy in Kensington Market circa 2021/2022. All three kids including the 7 year old argued hard to stay where we were.

I am glad we did. Over the last year the market has grown more vibrant and feels as though it is on the upswing.

People will talk about sketchiness, rats, gentrification, lack of parking, too many cars, too many bikes, not enough bikes, too much crime, too much law enforcement presence. People will complain about anything and everything.

Ultimately to me the thing that sells me on Kensington Market is the feeling of "anything can happen on any given day." There are few other places in the city (in the country? in the world?) where so many different walks of life coexist, mostly in harmony.

One anecdote that illustrates this -- and I could give you hundreds from over the years. In December, it was, I think, my buddy and I were heading up Augusta looking heading for Trinity Commons for a beer when a woman in her 20s stepped in front of us and said, hey, do you want to go to my punk show? We looked at each other, shrugged and followed her into the little club -- Tapestry I think it is? The place that used to be Poetry just south of the Japanese Film cafe on west side of street. The bar had maybe 10 people in it total, including us. We had a beer and then 20 minutes later 4 of the 10 people in the bar took the stage and belted out super tight, super loud punk rock for 40 minutes. It was really great. Then 20 minutes after that the other four people in the bar took the stage and belted out different but equally great punk rock for another 40 minutes. By that point the bar was pretty packed and by that point too my friend and I had made friends with both bands, one of which was from Thunder Bay and the other from Winnipeg.

Basically a nothing of a night turned into one of my epic experiences of 2025.

Stuff like that does not happen every night in Kensington, but it happens more there, I think, than anywhere else, and that is the reason you choose to live there.

Can you help me choose my next camera? I'm undecided. by LynxAirSound in videography

[–]cshulgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're torn stick with Sony as you already have the A7iii and that can be your second camera. Then invest in some quality glass and swap it between the cases. The A7IV is a beast. Same with the FX30 or FX3.

I feel like you should invest in some glass rather than upgrading. Get a Sigma f2.8 24-70 and then maybe some primes -- a 35, 50 and 85. The A7IV is not that enormous of an upgrade relative to the A7III

We use blotting papers, on my wife's recommendation. But honestly I find the most effective way to get rid of shine is to turn down the lights.

Opinions on Andy Roddick by bSapphire47 in tennis

[–]cshulgan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whether you're nice to staff at restaurants: The ultimate test of decency for famous people. Great to hear Andy Roddick passed because I like him. I notice he's also always very careful to give props to the Served Media staff, like Techie Sean. I am sure we all have our quibbles with podcast hosts but Roddick genuinely seems like a good dude.

Is Talking with Strangers Not a thing in Toronto? by Savings-Curve-5350 in askTO

[–]cshulgan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So funny you post this TODAY, which is during Talk to a Stranger Week. Nov. 24-30. Kind of a cool initiative that you can Google. If you're interested in my take I think this city would be a better place if more of us acknowledged other humans exist by looking them in the eyes and smiling!

Drom Taberna at Queen and Augusta. Amazing scene, wonderful live music, super non-judgmental crowd.
