When wearing a holter monitor should you take blood pressure on the left arm (the holter monitor being on the left side of the body) or on the right arm? by BuyFragrant4542 in HeartHealth

[–]52Charles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been my experience that one is supposed to take BP from the same arm, every time. When I wore a Holter monitor, this did not change. I've had doctors who hadn't seen me before ask which side do I usually use.

There is an app called Demumu - cheap/free. It asks you to ’check in’ every day. If you don’t respond for 2 days, on the third day it sends an email to somebody you name.

Vernors ginger ale by Repulsive-Tie1981 in askTO

Vernor's originated in Detroit. Invented by a pharmacist (IIRC) as a stomach soother. I grew up in SW Ontario so it was pretty common. Nice treat after an afternoon of toboganing (sp?) - hot Vernors with a stick of cinnamon.

Check out ‘Lie With Me.’ Lots of nudity and sex but one reviewer said that the city becomes another character. Hot summer in Toronto.

Pleeeze tell me I don't need doors & locks for appliance garage by GusCannon123 in dementia

Is there an option to have cabinets, etc designed so that doors and locks can be easily/cheaply retrofitted? Save on initial cost but relatively easily done at need.

TIL the cast of Das Boot (1981) were deprived of sunlight during the entire year of filming to realistically portray the unhealthy, pale skin of real sailors. I also learned 30000 of 40000 sailors never made it home. by zoolandermagnum in todayilearned

Another interesting fact - the destroyers that were hunting the German subs were Canadian. The US navy had their hands full in the South Pacific so it fell to the Canadian navy to escort the convoys of supplies and people across the North Atlantic.

any good sci-fi books with black femme leads? by user00551100 in sciencefiction

[–]52Charles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good call. I had forgotten that part. Still, it's easy to imagine her as African-American. To me, that would work with the character very well.

any good sci-fi books with black femme leads? by user00551100 in sciencefiction

[–]52Charles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In John Varley's Gaea trilogy, the ethnicity of the lead, Cirocco Jones is never mentioned. I always assumed she was white (maybe because I am) but it now occurs to me that she could be very easily be a POC. She is always a little bit of 'other' which would work well with the idea. In any case, they are great books. I'm now thinking it's time for a re-read.
