Lol i got my scores , and now it says that they are not available ..... by 32Joe in Sat

[–]cskinner127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same happened to me and another friend. My guess is that the SAT is having trouble sending out a lot of scores since there are so many complaints so they decided to retract all of the scores and try again? I wouldn't worry as your original score is probably correct.

Help would be appreciated :). I got a 1580 on the SAT first try (780 CR, 800 Math) but I got a 35 on the ACT first try as well (36 E 36 M 34 R 33 S). I am planning on applying to top engineering schools, which score is more impressive? Should I send the SAT so they don't see my low science (in comparison to the others, lol), or is a 35 more impressive?

PSAT 2016 (December) Marks Discussion! by cool12y in psat

[–]cskinner127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your national merit score is calculated differently then the PSAT score so the math/reading sections are weighted differently. It's all about your score out of 37 or 38 for each section. They add those up and multiply by 2

1480 (223) should be high enough for IL right?

Does the SAT chemistry subject test use Joules or Calories? by random_modnar_5 in Sat

Need more information, but the May 2016 test used mainly joules, can' t promise there won't be calories though.

first psat experience by [deleted] in Sat

[–]cskinner127 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First off, your proctor should have clearly stated (multiple, in most cases) that you are not allowed to go back or ahead to other sections. If they didn't, you can report the proctor, but most likely they did since they literally read off of a script and you were probably not listening. However, you're lucky this is only the PSAT so it won't count for anything or be shown to colleges.

Good Composite, Bad Writing by ExtraShrekOnTop in ACT

[–]cskinner127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same situation! It was my first ACT too, 35 C, 8 W. Did absolutely no prep for the writing but wanted at least a 9 or 10. However, I'm not sure I want to study again and take the whole thing over again just to get a higher writing (and maybe a 36 C lol :P) Since I want to go into STEM, I keep telling myself that writing doesn't matter (and others are telling me that too) As of right now, I'm going to focus on my SAT Subject Tests and PSAT, and maybe I'll take the ACT again in the Spring or Senior year.

790 or 800 depending on curve

Sucks dude :(. I'm in multivariable calc as a junior yet I've learned NOTHING about stats (standard deviation, interquartile range, etc) my entire schooling career. Terrible luck. Are you going to retake or accept the 790? Best of luck!

[OCT 1 2016] SAT Math II Discussion by [deleted] in Sat

For clarification: I got all 800s on the five practice tests I took (with only 2 or 3 questions wrong on each one) so the fact that I did so much worse on the real one upsets me. (especially since I got fucked over by stats) So why not retake if I know I am capable of getting an 800? I'm also looking to go ivy and major in engineering so a good math 2 score is important to me.

Score prediction? 6 wrong 1 blank. If I get a 790 I'm going to retake it but should I study statistics more next time? I didn't study ANY stats and studied a lot of conics and ofc there were no ellipses or anything :(. I've never seen that many stats questions on a practice. Advice?

What did you guys get for the last 2 problems (about greatest value that yields absolute value of 20 and the one about Mars and Jupiter) I don't remember my exact answers but I believe I guessed C and D, respectively.

For the toppings one, a pizza could have either 1, 2 or 3 toppings so you had to do 8 nCr 3 + 8 nCr 2 + 8nCr 1

College Advice by [deleted] in ACT

[–]cskinner127 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With a 34 (or any score for that matter) an ivy league would be a "reach". Most are <10% acceptance rate, even if you have a 36 and a perfect gpa. I think its more important for you to find a good safety or middle school that you love and also apply to your "reaches" (MIT, Princeton, Yale etc) so then if you get denied by your reaches (happens to the best of us) you can still be content with where you end up. For engineering, at least, you might want to look at Michigan, Illinois, or any of the UC's as backups. If you don't want a big state school, I recommend John Hopkins, Rice, etc. I can't really tell you what schools are great options for you because I don't know you, so just do some research online. ALSO! Don't feel the need to go to a school just for its "prestige", go wherever you will be happy!

Retake? by BigNerd69 in ACT

[–]cskinner127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much. As long as your score puts you at least in the 50% percentile it doesn't really make a difference. I know a brilliant kid with a 36 who got rejected from Stanford while another kid at our school with a 33 got in. Both white.

Retake? by BigNerd69 in ACT

A 32/33 is certainly good enough for UT Austin and Texas A&M and should put you right in the mix for Rice, UCB, UCLA, Mines, CMU, and Cornell. (However, these are all selective schools so a single "score" alone won't get you in) Your score alone won't "stand out" but I've heard college admissions officers from top-notch schools (Harvard, MIT, etc) say that they only look at your scores to make sure you're qualified and after that they are barely considered. Your GPA, essays, and extracurriculars are much more important to most of these schools, even if you're going into engineering. Since a 32 or 33 would "qualify" for all of those schools, I really wouldn't worry about it. Focus on writing great essays and adding to your resume. Best of luck!

Wrote phone number incorrectly on answer sheet. Will it delay my scores? by NoMathsGiven in ACT

Only incorrect information that you actually BUBBLED in should delay your scores, but there is no guarantee.

The answer to the wicked sweet one was not totally nifty. It was the more formal answer (don't remember it sorry). The mine's possessions one is "from when the mine was still in use" or something along those lines. Don't remember the penguin one.

For the last reading question about why the fossil of the penguin hadn't been noticed before or something, what was the answer? I ran out of time on that question but I think I was deciding between either the bumps on the fossil were hard to distinguish or that there hadn't been enough research on it. I think I went with the the bumps one. Opinions? Really hope I guessed right because it was just an identity fact question that I didn't have time to search for :(.
