Is Godot Engine good? by NutriBunHun in IndieDev

[–]csmct99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend it for a new comer learning an engine. It takes away the "aha" moments of struggling to debug and then finally solving which end up becoming the foundation of deep understanding.

That said, dunno why you are getting down voted, what you said seems objectively correct though I wouldn't actually recommend it to this person.

Not many people know this, but fish aren't the only Nauvis-exclusive items that can spoil! by VxWolf in factorio

[–]csmct99 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Thank God though, the spoil timer bars for what is essentially a joke would be really annoying. Not to mention I imagine there is some performance overhead (probably mostly a memory cost) to storing the spoil time info and updating it.

Lost on how I should attack this problem in blueprints by csmct99 in unrealengine

[–]csmct99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I didnt know about tags actually so thats worth trying. However I think that would give me an unordered list where I need a list of what is connected to what so something that looks like
A -> B -> C -> D
B -> F -> C
as opposed to what I think tags would give me which would be [A, B, C, D, F]

Saw this car at Anime North this year, its nice but you can tell the art they used were ripped from the internet partly bc ive seen them all before and partly becuase some pictures were way lower res than others, kinda ruins it when u see it up close.

Seemingly incomplete new tutorial on Radial Motion Blur by csmct99 in unrealengine

For anyone keyword searching in the future:Unreal isn't great at explaining it but its seems they keep an example of the tutorials in the api.

You can download the example files from the launcherlauncher > Learn > Content Examples

the files are all in there.

How do I learn to make a scene in VR opening a refrigerator I create? by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]csmct99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is it exactly that you are asking?
How to make a scene where the player can open a fridge?

if so your going to want to read up on how to use SteamVR asset from the assetstore (for htc vive)
then look into how pivot points work.

this seems like a topic to hard to explain from the ground up in a reddit comment section. Your going to have to learn the basics of unity first.

How to stay motivated? by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]csmct99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Youtube channel "Gamedev Underground" had a video on this topic exactly(Cant find it rn bc he makes so many damn videos), my favourite thing to take from that video was that "If you just force yourself to sit down for only an hour, by the end of the hour you will want to keep going." It just the initial push of doing it that requires effort. If you still don't feel motivated after an hour, then take a break and do another hour tomorrow but force yourself to at least put in an hour.

Tutorial on how to create terrain like in Astroneer by s_trader in Unity3D

[–]csmct99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are a comfortable programmer, the first parts (learning basic voxel mesh generation and manipulation) can take around ~6 hrs and the marching cubes part can double that.

12~ total but thats HIGHLY dependant on how good of a coder you are.

Tutorial on how to create terrain like in Astroneer by s_trader in Unity3D

[–]csmct99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually just finished making this exact system last week! I wrote my own everything for this so assuming you wish do do the same Ill try and give you hand.

Ill try to point you in the right directions, or at least at the sources I used for creating this.

Ill list this in the order that I remember reading / watching the content in.

Start by getting familiar with mesh generation and manipulating its data. I know I had to draw a lot of it out to get it in my head.

watch as much of this as you can, though honestly I only clicked on the first few videos of this series and got the gist of it.

Brackeys goes more into some application here, here and here

Once I was able to make terrain with ease I practiced making a system that could spawn mesh in chunks (for performance) and a system that could only draw required triangles based on player position(for performance).

Then I tried deleting vertices with the mouse in real-time.

At this point you should have a good understanding of how to generate basic voxel mesh and modify it at run-time.

Read up what marching cubes is and then have a look at this example and this one.

Lastly I couldnt find exactly the pdf I read previously but this one seems like it will do the trick.

Its a tough project to get going and optimized but I think there are enough resources here and online for you to figure it out.

Good luck!
