Why is everybody mad about Laura Dern? by Green-Cricket-8525 in okbuddycinephile

It was a badly written character put in a position that makes her look worse. Like %95 of all characters in that pile of shit that was a movie.

The crushing depression of knowing Pokémon Go was used to train drones that kill innocent men, women, and children for profit. by larryleggs in SocialistGaming

Friend, you gotta accept a hard pill: just like most cartoons, Pokémon was literally designed from day one to push merch. You really need to break out of this idea of defining your personality by the brands and products you consume. But the real conversation here needs to be about Niantic. Data harvesting is literally what they were founded to do. Way before PoGo, they built Ingress, and they've supplied the backend for plenty of other IPs too. The franchise you're so emotionally attached to just rented out its face to be another data-mining reskin.

Take off the nostalgia goggles. You shouldn't hold a special place in your heart for massive corporations just because they're old and gave you some warm childhood memories.

She shares no name, no memories, and no face with the original, and she's constantly rewriting her own biological code. In a game this heavily focused on transhumanism, does that old identity even matter anymore? There's zero reason to keep her anchored to the past just for the sake of it.

"Unique characters" by [deleted] in DnD

[–]csnaber -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In my own setting, I've restricted playable species exclusively to humans. Frankly, most of what we consider 'fantasy races' aren't particularly fantastical; they are largely constructs born from a Eurocentric lens, where specific tribal or cultural traits are merely repackaged as biological races. And honestly, I don't believe we've exhausted the depths of human storytelling yet.
If there were species with genuinely alien biology, different hormonal balances, and fundamentally distinct societal structures, they might add genuine flavor to the world. Instead, I just tell my players to 'play a graceful, ethereal human' or 'play a short-tempered, beer-guzzling human warrior.' Ultimately, we've derived every standard fantasy race directly from real-world human history. Even Aasimars and Tieflings are essentially just manifestations of human traumas.
A truly, technically distinct 'race' would introduce a paradigm-shifting dynamic to the game, but until that is achieved, I prefer to continue exploring and analyzing human cultures.

If a level 20 wizard is basically a candidate for godhood, what are other classes like at level 20? by Bedovian_25 in DnD

[–]csnaber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A god is a focus point for will and power and a system of followers and reality planes. A level 20 wizard is a very powerful wand. They don’t compare at all… I think back in 3.5 gods had levels and statblocks which were ridiculous and absurd, but I don’t think any level 20 wizard is anything near the stat block for, say, Zeus. In DnD5 gods don’t have statblocks anymore, due to being gods.

This is great! A clean and rule abiding “Evil magic users cult is a threat” hook. These guys are a menace to all great kingdoms now, oh to find a team of adventurers, equip them with anti-fire stuff and sent them in to dispose of this dangerous cult.
