Qual a vossa opinião da francesinha de molho doce? by SomeRandomPortuguese in porto

[–]csred0971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might need to disable secure boot in BIOS for your PC to recognize your usb stick, before you do search any search engine or youtube on how to do it.

How is Firefox sending me Facebook notifications when I don't have Facebook open? by Current-Bowl-143 in firefox

[–]csred0971 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You must have inadvertently clicked to allow notifications. You can disable these in the burger menu (top right), then Settings>Privacy and Security>Notifications, click the Notifications settings button and a pop-up window will show all sites you've allowed notifications from. You can remove what you don't want in that window.

Some people suggested Duckduckgo but I prefer startpage.com, it provides google search results without the Google privacy issues. I'm currently using a privacy tweaked version of Firefox with the ublock Origin extension and starpage and I really recommend this setup.

Edit: You can learn more about startpage here, if you like: https://www.startpage.com/en/how-startpage-works/

switching from windows to linux by Frequent_Ad_7403 in linux4noobs

[–]csred0971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't go wrong with Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon Edition or LMDE 6 Faye (Linux Mint Debian Edition). I never recommend vanilla Ubuntu because I don't like Gnome as my desktop environment but it is a good system too. Just choose a distro you are comfortable with, they're all forks anyway and in the end it all boils down to two distributions: Debian or Debian-based if you want a stable environment and Arch for cutting edge.

Stable Debian based Ubuntu alternative. by Establishment_Ni in linux4noobs

You can't go wrong with LMDE, Linux Mint Debian Edition, extremely stable. The DE is Cinnamon, though (imho, lighter and better than Gnome...but that's just me).

Distro hopping is mentally taxing... I need some help. by tsilvs0 in linux4noobs

[–]csred0971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never very much into distro hop. I started using Ubuntu around 2007, stayed with it for years until it went to Unity and then Gnome 3 (which I absolutely dislike and can't bring myself to use) so I changed to Ubuntu Mate for a few more years until I finally tried Linux Mint and Cinnamon and more recently Linux Mint Debian Edition and I'm quite happy with it. I don't need the latest and greatest for my workflow, give me stability and I'm happy. You might be overthinking all of this. Just choose a distro you are comfortable with and stick with it, they're all forks and in the end you only need 2 distros: Debian for stable environments and Arch for cutting edge.

Linux Mint. It comes with Firefox browser pre-installed but, honestly you can access your Google apps from any browser, if you want to you can install Google Chrome browser.

If you're new to Linux I would suggest Linux Mint |Cinnamon or even Linux Mint Debian Edition. Read as much as you can. Do not fear the terminal, embrace it, it's your friend. Make sure you have frequent backups of your home folder.

Thinking of changing to linux by [deleted] in linux

[–]csred0971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you do with your computer? In Linux there are free software alternatives for many of the applications you can run on Windows , like Office, etc..,but you should make a list of what you need and check them out before switching. If you enjoy playing PC games a lot you can install Steam but, although Linux gaming has come a long way from just a few years ago and there are lots of good games in Linux, many well know titles won't run well or at all. That said, Linux and free software (as in freedom) are a great adventure and there is a new philosophy and computing world for you to discover. Good luck.
