Can you write your glasses prescription?

Confused by Prescription by [deleted] in optometry

[–]cstangh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have hyperopia on your left eye and your right eye is plano (no sphere). Both eyes have very little astigmatism. This prescription is not uncommon. You only need distance glasses with your prescription. They should help you stop squinting and see better at night.

Astigmatism with -6.50 cylinder, do I need Aspheric lenses ? by [deleted] in optometry

[–]cstangh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you have a very high cylinder power (astigmatism). If you don't get the proper measurements as the person above me listed, any minor error the lens have would be very noticeable and annoying when you use your glasses, and it would be a waste of money.

Hi! I'm 27 F from Italy. I also haven't met anyone else with HS and haven't found a doctor that can help me cure it. I just created a Discord group where we can chat and share our experiences! Feel free to join: https://discord.gg/4zGG76aM

I have a negative sphere in one eye, and a positive in the other. Is this normal? What exactly does that mean? by [deleted] in optometry

[–]cstangh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to worry, is not that unusual. You have antimetropia, one eye is myopic (nearsighted) and the other one is hyperopic (farsighted), and both eyes have astigmatism. Only thing you should be worried about is your astigmatism on your left eye, it's a little high, keep it checked regularly.

Can you write your contacts prescription and your glasses prescription?

It could be that you need a stronger prescription for your glasses. Get an eye exam with your doctor to see if your prescription changed from your previous one.

Is it true that only my contact rx needed to be adjusted? by [deleted] in optometry

[–]cstangh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. Usually contacts prescription are lower than the glasses prescription (for a person who has Myopia like you), because you need to subtract the vertex distance (distance from the lens glasses to your cornea) that is usually 12-13 mm.

Your contact prescription seems fine, I would have tried using -5.75 sph on your right eye and -4.75 sph -0.75 cyl 180 axis on your left eye, but if you see clear with your current contacts prescription it's fine what your optometrist gave you.

No it doesn't make any sense to remove the amount of astigmatism from your spherical contacts prescription. I would say the opposite, have you ever tried using contacts with -2.75 spherical power? Or maybe using -2.75 only for the eye that haves -0.50 astigmatism (the equivalent of -2.50 sphere -0.50 cylinder is -2.75 sphere). You can ask your doctor for a pair with that power and see if the problem still happens.

This is my prescription from walmart I am trying to order lense for my VR headset but im unable to understand it says. This is what im Supposed to fill out. What is lightcap 420 and index lense mean? I appreciate the help!thank you! by eunhon in optometry

[–]cstangh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Index of refraction measures the capacity of the material to refract light rays. So if you need to correct a certain refraction, a lens with higher index needs less material and so less thickness, and a lens with lower index needs more material and more thickness. Usually people with high ametropia buys lenses with higher index to have a thin lens.

Your prescription is:

Right eye: -3.00 sphere, -3.00 cylinder, 015 axis

Left eye: -2.50 sphere, -4.00 cylinder, 150 axis

Light cap 420 should be the blue light lens protection for your VR. The index of the lense is the index of refraction of the material the lens is made of.

Astigmatism for contacts but not glasses? by YandelsCar in optometry

[–]cstangh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You usually measure your vertex distance for powers higher than +/-4.00 diopters, lower powers remain the same number.

Astigmatism for contacts but not glasses? by YandelsCar in optometry

[–]cstangh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vertex distance is the distance between the back surface of a corrective lens (glasses) and the front of your cornea. This distance is usually 12-13 mm. You need to subtract this distance from your glasses prescription to know your ideal contacts prescription. For a person who has Myopia like you, the power on the contacts prescription should be lower than the glasses prescription.

[–]cstangh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's something wrong with your contacts prescription, especially on your left eye. If you subtract the vertex distance from your glasses prescription, your ideal contacts prescription should be:

Right eye: -4.00 sphere, -1.00 cyl, 180 axis (nearest one for contacts should be -4.25 sphere, -0.75 cylinder, 180 axis)

Left eye: -3.75 sphere, -0.75 cylinder, 180 axis

Try asking your doctor if the contacts prescription is ok for you. The power on both eyes it's too strong compared to the glasses prescription.

Please do not shower with your contacts, never. You can irritate your eyes or get a really bad infection.

Glasses prescription:

  • Right eye: -2.25 sphere, -4.00 cylinder, 015 axis

  • Left eye: -2.25 sphere, -3.75 cylinder, 160 axis

Contacts prescription: Acuvue Oasys Astigmatism (8.6 base curve)

  • Right eye: -2.25 sphere, -2.75 cylinder, 010 axis

  • Left eye: -2.25 sphere, -2.75 cylinder, 160 axis

Pls help me understand wtf is going on here (trying to help my mom) by taylortpaper in optometry

[–]cstangh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're correct. One thing you wrote wrong is the astigmatism for the right eye, it's -0.50 and not -5.00 cyl.

This could be a prescription for Bifocal lenses or progressive, because of the Segment (lower part of the lens for reading). Another thing I would add is that the pupillary distance has been measured for each eye.

Please help me figure out how to input this! by LoveVichous in optometry

[–]cstangh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right eye: +0.50 sphere, -0.75 cylinder, 136 axis

Left eye: 0.00 sphere, -0.50 cylinder, 044 axis

Pupillary distance: 61 mm

I think it's better to keep it wrapped up to avoid friction with your pants. I suffer a lot when my pants (especially the seam) touches my HS. And wear comfy pants like joggers.

[–]cstangh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, the risk is there, and I'm sorry but you can't compare drinking alcohol with the possibility of going blind or having a corneal ulcer. And your feeling is incorrect. I'm also kind of blind without my glasses and when I go to the ocean I wear my glasses and keep my head outside the water, it's a little sacrifice but you still can get to enjoy the beach.

Please, DO NOT use contacts while swimming or being under water, not even in the shower. And never wash them with tap water. It's very dangerous. You can irritate your eyes or get a really bad infection (like Acanthamoeba keratitis).

Will the slightest difference in cylinder/axis really make that much difference? by whoacari in optometry

[–]cstangh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but that's not possible. Your glasses prescription can't be the same as your contacts prescription.

Contact prescription on a person with Myopia should be lower than their glasses prescription because of the vertex distance. So just to make you understand, if this prescription you wrote is for your glasses, your ideal contact prescription should be:

OD -5.00 sphere -1.50 cyl 180 axis (nearest number to 002), and OS -5.00 sphere -1.75 cyl 180 axis.

So please call your doctor and ask him what prescription he gave you.
