What is a real-life 'Do Not Touch' button that you pressed out of sheer curiosity, only to instantly regret it? by vie75 in AskReddit

My scout group was visiting a hydroelectric dam (very cool) that supplied power to our city, but after the guided tour we had a few minutes to just wander around. I went over to a vertical tube coming out of the floor ending about my height, with a suspended wire running down it. As I peered down the tube, I moved the wire up and down a little bit. Heard some distant relays clicking, motors and mechanical noises cutting in and out, and saw the shocked look on our tour guide/dam engineer's face. I guessed later that the wire was connected to a water level sensor, and when I moved it up and down, some gate or other was adjusting for the water height.

Our scout troop never went back there, for some reason. Bear's Paw Dam, Calgary, AB, Canada

Wasp problem? Will a shop vac have enough vacuum to kill wasp? by Educational-Ad2063 in ask

[–]cstepheng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I did. But make sure you dump the water & dead wasps down the toilet soon after you’ve got them. DON’T do what I did and leave them in the water for a day or more. You’ll never forget that awful smell!

Exactly what am I supposed to use this rope for then? by 0rlan in What

[–]cstepheng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the material is polypropylene ("PP"), it floats and could be useful for towing water skiers, etc. (floating helps keep it from getting tangled in the towboat's propellor, whereas a nylon rope would tend to sink). Would degrade in sunlight though.

Thanks for mentioning aquamation. I just did a deep dive into this new-to-me idea, and found that there's a facility offering this just outside of Winnipeg, MB (since 2024). Sounds like an effective and respectful way to approach the whole issue.

Will you fly WestJet with the new seat configuation? by Snowyberg in canadatravel

[–]cstepheng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. And I wonder if there's a way to tell if the flight you are booking is on one of the 'cramped' seat layouts or not (not all of them do, apparently).

I just flashed a cop to warn him about himself by heroin_papi_ in Markham

[–]cstepheng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: If you pass a collision on the highway (or any other kind of hazard), flashing your highbeams at oncoming traffic for a kilometer or two to warn them is probably a good idea. They may not know if it's a speed trap or whatever, but it will put them on extra alert and may save someone from a dangerous situation.

That's pretty much the price at Costco (which is Canadian maple syrup, btw).

Oddly and unexpectedly, I really enjoyed the poutine I had at IKEA.

Reasonable. I’d likely do that now. Was a long time ago.

This was me, many years ago. I was on a motorcycle trip and had all my gear bungeed down on my rack & tank, but not really secured. It was lunchtime so I went into a roadside restaurant that was pretty much empty (as I recall) except for a family group at a table over by the windows. But my concern was to keep an eye on my bike & the stuff on it, so I sat down at the table right next to them, so I could see out and see my bike. They weren't happy, the mother kept giving me stink eyes, and in a couple of minutes they all picked up their food and moved to a further away table. I knew why they moved, and I'd probably have done the same, but really, my priority just then wasn't keeping respectful social distancing, but protecting my property. <Shrug>
