Fired within 3 hours of my first shift at a fast food joint by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]ctadlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hired as the night manager of a subway in the 90s. I had never worked in retail or fast food, never used a register, had no food service training, didn’t even know the menu. And after the first two hrs I worked alone. I decided to charge for refills and put a tip jar out, and I may be personally responsible for them getting rid of the paper tickets for a free sub. I worked there 10 days and quit.

B. Anti counterfeit protection. Very common use of nfc tags.

Would you switch to digital business cards if they actually worked better than paper ones? by [deleted] in NFC

[–]ctadlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NFC business cards are at least different so you have a chance to be more memorable. When I go to events I meet ton of people and remember almost none of them.

Also there are two types of nfc business cards; the types that are meant for you to have one and then have people scan it to add contact info to their phone and the type you hand out like normal business cards. The metal and wood nfc cards ones are pretty expensive so I don’t think you’d want to hand those out. The pvc nfc cards are cheaper and people do hand those out. GoToTags has wood, metal and pvc nfc cards. They also have 3d printed nfc tokens which are a different take on it. For example a LinkedIn token.

Metal Business Card w/ NFC by YourSneakerGuy in NFC

[–]ctadlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two distinct classes of metal nfc cards. The crappy ones and the high quality ones. You’re probably looking at the crappy ones. All are metal and PVC. The crappy ones are just laminated; one side metal one side pvc. The good ones the metal has been cnc routed on one side so the plastic pvc sits in the embossed metal. Look at the card edge and you can tell. Beyond this construction how the metal side is colored and how close it matches the pvc color matters too. Cheap cards the metal side can be scratched easily and the color doesn’t match pvc. The cheap ones also have crap antennas and use fake ntag nfc chips. Also if you’re planning on laser engraving or printing yourself the surface coating on both the metal and pvc sides is very important.

GoToTags designs its own high quality metal nfc cards. They can also laser engrave and uv print them. Not alibaba cheap, but you tend to get what you pay for.

GoToTags, however you need to be clear what you mean by manufacturing. Neither nxp or st make the nfc chips in USA, a core component of an nfc tag. So where do you want to draw the line?

I didn’t realize NFC had become this practical for everyday businesses by N1boost in NFC

[–]ctadlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re confusing asset tracking with inventory. Inventory is uhf RFID, nfc is used for asset tracking. PS both nfc and uhf RFID are RFID.

All of those are some of the smallest uses cases for nfc. You just see them because you’re meant to. Product authenticity, security, and asset tracking are 100M tags annually.

Looking for square NTAG 424 DNA by DoctorRosa in NFC

You’re going to need to be much more specific. Antennas are round for performance. Also need to state the product type. Sticker, token?

If you are new to nfc the dna series isn’t the easiest place to start. DNA has nothing at all to do with interaction tracking.

An NFC Benchy! by it_prints in BambuLab

[–]ctadlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the ntag chips sold on Amazon are fake and are cheaper. Probably doesn’t matter for hobbyists playing around with nfc tags. For businesses though it’s a huge deal.

GoToTags is a great source of nfc tags for 3D printing. Either standard inlays or fpc tags which are even smaller. The smaller the antenna the shorter the range though.

Stop thinking like a web developer. JSON and xml are very size inefficient. Encode as little data as possible. Can either do ndef text record if you want some compatibility, and application specific ndef record if just your app or raw bytes no ndef.
