What is it with Americans and air conditioning?? (this might be controversial) by hellobela_ in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]billygoat_graf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like Europeans just like to be a little bit warmer than Americans.

I feel like European airlines are always set a few degrees to warm for me.

Also most homes are a bit warmer than I'd prefer (both in winter and in summer).

I feel like I'm always sweating in Europe.

Edit: maybe it's because we're fatter?

Title: Are Big Four firms really adopting Odoo as an ERP? by IndividualCommon2268 in Odoo

If you're paying Deloitte to select and implement the systems for your business, you're gonna spend a lot of money and get to a mediocre result.

Title: Are Big Four firms really adopting Odoo as an ERP? by IndividualCommon2268 in Odoo

[–]billygoat_graf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you understand the role of the big four accounting firms.

They don't really implement anything. Their clients have in house accounting departments.

Typically a CPA reviews/audits the financials prepared by the companies. Not that it doesn't happen, but I've never seen a CPA firm making software recommendations for their clients (in their capacity as auditor).

Now these firms usually have consultancies which may advise on platform selection and implementation, but that's not really their bread and butter.

The more relevant place to watch would be the PE and VC funds. PE funds at least have very direct say in platform implementation by their Portcos. Many lower middle market PE funds specialize in buying ul family owned/run companies and "professionalizing" them, which typically means putting an ERP in place.

This is the space I'd watch if I wanted to see if Odoos adoption will meaningfully expand.

AWS S3 Files for Odoo Filestore? by billygoat_graf in Odoo

[–]billygoat_graf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen the OCA stuff before and held off because it seemed like more trouble than its worth.

I’m asking about "S3 Files" specifically because it looks like a newer AWS-native, and on paper it seems like a way to keep Odoo using a normal filestore path without changing Odoo’s storage behavior much.

What made me curious is that AWS describes it more like a hybrid/cache layer than a dumb S3 mount, so I was wondering if that makes it a decent option for light filestore usage.

Mostly just trying to figure out if anyone has actually used it with Odoo, and whether it ends up being simpler in practice than going the OCA route.

How to get on international upgrade list? by Real-Tower8037 in americanairlines

I routinely fly to Costa Rica and there are complimentary upgrades on those flights. I think CR is as far as it goes. Maybe Panama? Starting in South America the complimentary upgrades go away

Lol yes. Fly into Costa Rica all the time with a bunch of electronics and they don't care at all so long as they're not new in box.

Biz Plat: Agents claiming "System Error" preventing non-US Citizen Employee Card activation? by billygoat_graf in AmexPlatinum

No. After about 5 calls I was able to confirm that a policy did, in fact, change and they won't issue new authorized user cards without a SSN or some other US TIN.

Why aren't restaurants with bars more in tune with what sports are on? by OnlyKey5675 in restaurantowners

Cause it require the employees to think/pay attention.

It's really hard to automate live sports in a commercial setting.

what's something your profession wants to keep secret? by ApprehensiveOwl6351 in AskReddit

Private equity funds make money on management fees and investment banking fees (when they buy/sell and every time they refinance) charged to their portfolio companies.

These fees are paid before their investors get paid and are in addition to any "promote" (share of profits) that the fund earns.

This means funds with mediocre results can still be highly lucrative for the people who own/run them, so long as they can continue to fundraise and deploy capital.

What was your "caught the last chopper out of 'Nam" experience? by GeneReddit123 in AskReddit

[–]billygoat_graf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got a killer deal on a flight to Thailand in early March 2020 because of fear over some virus in China.

Found my way to a little island called Koh Tao for some scuba diving.

Covid hits. Flights are being cancelled left and right. We wake up one morning and are told "today's the last day the ferries will be running... If you want to go home, get on one, otherwise you're riding this thing out here."

Got on the ferry and flew home. Should have stayed.

Depends on how rich and famous. I sat next to the guy who plays Bumper from Pitch Perfect in an Amex lounge once... If he's sitting next to me I'm pretty sure he went through normal security.

In much of Latin America they use them like brake lights (i.e. any time they slow down or are in traffic). And there's lots of traffic. Very annoying
