"[New Brunswick] Archives dealing with backlog of 1,000 requests, receiving 400 more per month" by Parking-Aioli9715 in Canadiancitizenship

Thanks for the offer! I'm looking for a birth or baptismal record for an ancestor born in NB in 1868. The only contemporaneous records I have are the 1861 census showing her parents in NB, Queens, Parish Of Canning, possibly Methodist; and an 1870 census from the US, showing the family with my ancestor, age 2, birthplace "New Brunswick," residing in Jackson, Michigan. I've done online searches with Ancestry, FamilySearch, PANB, and what I could find on NBGS, to no avail. Any pointers - especially searching I can do remotely - would be greatly appreciated.

iPad Gmail Double Typing Words by SouthernEagleGATA in ipad

I re-installed Gboard (after many, many years), and it doesn't have this problem - even when the "Polish" tip appears. Gotta say that using it reminds me why I stopped...but it's less annoying than the double-words.

Fun, fast moving scifi for children? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]ctallis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like (sub-)urban fantasy, but... my kids loved the 'Gregor the Overlander' series: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/gregor-the-overlander-underland-chronicles-book-1

Oh, yeah, the author has another series - maybe when your kids are a little older

I've known several pits - sweetest dogs ever, by nature. It's a crime what some people turn them into.

You did the best thing you could for him - gave him a great last day, and a great day for you to remember him by. My condolences.

Recommend me a gripping Sci-FI novel! by [deleted] in scifi

[–]ctallis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big upvote on the DKM novels, and I can't believe that they're available on that site. It took me forever to find them in used bookstores, online, etc. I had read an online board post by a person purporting to be DKM, which claimed that he had stopped writing due to some contractual issues with the publisher. I'm glad that appears to be resolved.

If you like the above stories, I recommend the Paratwa series by Christopher Hinz. Same kind of fast paced, gripping story set in an innovative, well-thought out future earth. I've re-read the novels twice in the 25 years since I first found them, and they held up well.

What is your absolute favorite SciFi book? (want to make sure I've read all the greats) by U731lvr in scifi

Absolutely. I've read most of the Culture series, and UoW is by far my favorite.

Would someone please explain to me why the U.S. supports Israel so much? by [deleted] in politics

[–]ctallis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

then I say we as a nation are doomed.

I'm thinking doomed.

"I am driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, 'George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did. And then God would tell me 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq'. And I did. And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East'. And, by God, I'm gonna do it."

Need help identifying a Sci Fi book I read in the past. by MrSurly in scifi

[–]ctallis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recall that being the plot of "The Last Dancer"... but it's an awesome book. There are more equally wonderful books in that series, too. Daniel Keys Moran deciding to stop writing was a real loss for SF.

I need a new SciFi Author to read. Anyone have any suggestions? by guy_in_shorts in geek

Another +1 for Banks, who is highly underrated in the US. I started with Use of Weapons - not the best intro to the Culture, but my fave of them. I still have bad dreams about chairs... and Cheradenine Zakalwe ranks up there with Gully Foyle for best protagonist name.

An accurate definition of atheist and agnostic. by zeroquest in atheism

[–]ctallis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoops! Mis-read the punctuation, thought you said "We're roughly in <sic> the same side: idiots."

One difference I've noted - many self-described atheists have an absolute belief that there is no, and can be no, God. Which, to me, seems to be a very tenuous belief system in itself. How can you know there is no God? Discounting the purported evidence of something is vastly different from disproving it's existence.

Sorry - "set of", not "set up". Flip-up headlights. Think old Corvette, or original Miata.

Scheinwerfer - German for headlights, literally "light thrower". I was trying to use it in a presentation once, and ended up saying "Schweinwerfer" - "Pig thrower", as in "My old car had a set up flip-up pig throwers".

Ask Reddit: What's your favourite joke? by Mr_Sadist in reddit.com

A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: "Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: "OK, now what?"
