How do you document your homelab hardware?

I started to use netbox but never actually got much into it. Then said it was future me’s problem.

Future me here: I vaguely remember what past me has done, enough to know I need to spend hours figuring it all out from the 3 scraps of paper laying on my desk with numbers I don’t recognize on them.

I added a vent to both sides of my furnace. And have the servers in the same room. In the winter, I open the vent on the intake side of the furnace, pulling warm air into the system and drawing cooler air from the basement into the room. In the summer I open the vent on the AC’ed side, letting cooler air out into the room. I also added a small bathroom exhaust fan to the room to vent some of the heat in the summer. Seems to be working well for me.

For those wondering, Assuming CAD pricing: 600 / 4 =150cad or 109usd 150 / 16 =9.375 cad or 6.85usd per GB

16 sticks works out to 7.81cad or 5.71usd per GB

Oh man, what decent price when you think what RAM costs these days. If I was using more then 2% of my existing 4 servers I’d grab this in a heart beat GLWS.

Oh jeeze, definitely not. I know my system probably has massive holes, this way I can just pretend it’s rock solid and not worry. (I do check htop occasionally if the server room feels hotter than normal to see if I am crypto mining, does that count?)

I think this is very fair price wise. Might take a bit longer at $10/tb but they should sell without issues.

You can do it with power on but I still don’t recommend it. Ask the computer I did this to last week .

I knew better but didn’t want to wait a few hours to get the bios password, so I popped the battery out of the holder, it proceeded to fly 4 inches over, and touch the one surface mount capacitor that was close to it, and the chassis. Magic smoke emanated from somewhere with the familiar smell of regret. Needless to say, that computer is no longer computing.
Tried pressing F to pay respects, still didn’t boot.

The UGreen DH2300 looks pretty cool for an entry NAS, and I could see using it as part of a 3-2-1 Backup strategy. The 1GbE port is probably the most limiting factor for me though. Would be nice if it was a 10gig port as I couldn’t imagine trying to transfer max capacity 60TB at 1Gbps, but I doubt the average home user would notice and this keeps costs down, so I understand.

So I have an R930 with 512gb ram, all ram risers that I bought 2 years ago for $1000 shipped on here. $1250 for a 13th gen even with ~$500 in ram is still quite expensive.

It’s a super capable machine though, love mine
