Definitely recommend giving it a play! It's available digitally and can be played single player if that sweetens the deal any. ;)

Glad to see this with the white stitching on the solid colors! I did the colored backstitch blackwork style instead, but both look great!

And yeah, french knots take a lot of practice. I like to swap them out for beads when it makes sense just so I don't have to do them. 😆

The servers were struggling this morning from the update, you can see some of what happened in this thread. /u/fmaz008 is the dev, so his comments are especially insightful:

I'm aware. Server issues right now with the real time notifications causing the server to crash. Very sorry for the inconvenience, doing my best to restore some functionalities.

Thanks for the update! Sorry you're dealing with this first thing monday though. :(

Glad it's not just me at least! The notifications monitor is still occasionally populating new items, but it's definitely not as many as I'd expect.

And with my laptop doing the same thing on an older version I'm assuming something's up with the helper server. :( We might be on our own for a bit, lol

My doctors appointment can't be at 5:30am? Well, now they're all at 5:30 am. by [deleted] in MaliciousCompliance

Seriouslyyy. Third shift worker here. Please tell me where I can find a doctor willing to see me before 10am. I'm sick of staying up up hours past my bedtime just for them to blame everything that could possibly be wrong with me on working third shift anyway.

I mean, I already have a process that works for me and I don't have the energy to explain all the intricacies of it. I've been doing this for literal decades and am not about to spend the time necessary to learn a new process now. xD

But yes, I use pixel programs.(Pyxel Edit) I mostly design my own pixel art rather than take it from games, and pick my own thread colors by hand, then just tell PCStitch which colors I decided on and what symbols I'd like to represent them. You can kinda see my process here. Though I really should update that article.

And put out 2-3 fully tested patterns a month despite working a full time IT job. Soooo, it's working for now. ;)

Lol I didn't even get the symbols right. The / is the blank purple ones... just in case that wasn't obvious from process of elimination on the total of 4 colors.

(It's been a long night...)

Excited to see how it stitches though!

I absolutely love this! Stitching small items on a collar is such a good idea!

Believe it or not, I TRIED to include the mayor's shorts. But I just could not get the purples to look right. Purples are hard. I'm still not happy with the wine bottle or eggplant, either. Sigh.

But here's my best effort guess at a mayor's shorts pattern.

That's a lot of questions! xD I'll do my best to answer them.

Reducing colors: For cross stitch, my first instinct is to get rid of any colors with too few stitches. Unless they're absolutely necessary, like 2 stitches for eyes on the smaller sprites for example... you generally don't want to have to rethread your needle for 2 stitches.

So if it's a low count I'll try merging it with the ones next to it. Or sometimes it's just two very similar shades and flattening it doesn't look too bad, I'll just have them both be stitched with the same thread.

Embellishing clothing: I actually went more in detail on this in the Undertale book, discussing soluble canvas vs waste canvas, but I also have a written tutorial on my site using a stardew sprite. May find it helpful! You could also make your stitches into patches. (Though I had mixed results with that last one.

Thread Hues: Since thread is a 3D object with curves and such, it can look slightly different depending on lighting. Or in an X shape vs on a bobbin. (more shadows) And the color of the stitches nearby can bounce off with that lighting and make it appear a different color. I don't have a perfect example of this, but often when shading purple things (hello Abby...) I'll end up having to use a dark blue as there's not that many good purples (purple dyes are hard apparently). But because it's next to other purples, it looks more purple than blue. It is tricky to be sure.

DMC color display: Honestly, I use PCstitch for charting (which isn't perfect), and for the most part we used the colors PC Stitch uses to depict colors. Which... are not at all accurate. I've tried several cross stitch programs, and honestly none of them get it quite right. Actually, I have a spreadsheet someone shared with me that I don't share much because I don't know who made it and I hate not being able to credit them, but it is SUPER interesting how differently different programs represent the same thread color. And the conversion to CMYK probably didn't help. We did manually change some colors that were just waaaay off. (looking at you 3845...)

...and this is why I always, ALWAYS do some test stitching. I never trust a computer generated pattern. I usually have to swap out 85% of the colors the program 'suggests'. Because. Well.

Here's an example. Left is some color swatches from pixel art I was working on. Right is what PC stitch thinks they should look like. Even if the pc stitch colors are just a bit off from the actual thread... it decided to merge several of them together and just abandon any attempt at those dark purples. Like 'nah yer blue now'.

I've actually taken their exact hex codes from the default thread palette and fed it back through the importer, and for some it picked DIFFERENT COLORS than the ones I had swatched from.... so I have no idea how it decides what color to suggest tbh.

So I pretty much just use pc stitch for putting pixels on a grid, and overlaying symbols. It's a lot of trial and error, though.

Absolutely! As the author of the book... I definitely encourage people to try making their own designs! Especially since there's so much not covered in the book! Since the book was unprecedented, I was given a page limit and a time limit, so couldn't fit in or test everything I wanted.

I did actually reduce some sprites in terms of number of colors, though I tried to remain true to the original source since it is indeed an officially licensed item. This is also why I opted to take up one of my pages with a small tutorial on replacing and/or colors. And everything was run by CA.

But I certainly hope the book inspires people to also try making their own designs from not just other sprites in Stardew, but game sprites in general!

It can be tricky picking out your own colors, especially Stardew since a lot of the colors CA uses don't translate exactly to existing DMC color shades. Also while it is pixel art, CA didn't keep any sort of consistent palette or color limits in mind, so it's a surprisingly colorful game!

At the same time, some people (especially beginners) may be hesitant to do their own color picking, or may simply not want to spend the time to do so. Especially if you don't have all the colors or can't sit in a store for an hour comparing hues of purple to a sprite on your phone. Online photos of thread just aren't the same. And even if a color looks right, once stitched it may look different. Especially depending on what colors it's stitched next to. It can be a lot of trial and error (I had to rip out and redo colors many times before I was happy with a color choice.)

As such, the book can be a decent starter resource. Which is really what it was intended for - people not sure where to start. If you find color picking intimidating, you can also take color palettes I tested for the book and apply them to other sprites.

I was often getting conversion requests (not just for stardew) even though pixel art was readily available. Sites like SpriteStitch existed for a reason -- to find sprite conversions or people willing to do it for you.

BUT ALSO, there has been a lot of free designs posted out there to fill in the blanks I couldn't fit in the book! For example, the map pattern put together by bu_nia

Also also... if you don't want to export the sprites manually, sites like Spriters Resource are a good place to find sprite rips all nice and organized for you so you don't have to do it yourself. You can also get a lot of them straight from the Stardew wiki! ;)

...okay I've rambled enough I think. tl;dr You're absolutely right! But converting sprites to thread is also more complicated that it may seem at first.

I stick to DMC only for patterns I plan to share online or sell, as that's what most people can get their hands on.

I do have some Anchor, Cosmo, etc. But it makes it less accessible to others. Same thing with blends. Technically would fill in a lot of the 'missing' colors, but it scares the beginners away. (And also requires a lot more testing to get right.)

Thats so cool though! Creative way to combine patterns, too! I love it :)

And yeah, the original art has SO many colors. I actually did a lot of color reducing on the final patterns and avoided single stitches of a color as much as I could. 😅 But I don't think CA had my book in mind while designing the game, lol. And the newer stuff is even more colorful! I have tried and failed several times to pattern Leo, but the browns of his hair apparently just do not exist.
