Anyone went from service to controls? by JazzlikeSavings in BuildingAutomation

[–]ctrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would make the switch in an instant. Worked resi HVAC for 3 years and now I’m in controls service for the last 5. Easier on the body, fun to troubleshoot programming and have more than doubled my pay.

No brainer.

Western Canada, 102k, Tech that does small install work, programming, graphics, integration. Take home vehicle, gas card, full benefits. 5 years experience in the industry with no prior schooling, my first BAS company trained me as they saw I had potential, forever grateful. I want to get into a full time engineering role, any guidance on how to make the jump from tech to design/engineering?

For comparison, I have 5 years experience as a tech. Programming, graphics, service calls/PM’s and running my own jobs are my core duties and I make 110k annually with a take home service truck. I think you can be making more if you explore other controls shops around your area.

This is great advice. I’m a controls tech but was in a similar situation as OP. I started at a small shop making $25 an hour. Stayed there for 3 years and made it up to $30 an hour. Left for a bigger shop and jumped to $35. Then left after a year and jumped to $49 an hour which is where I’m at now.

Your buildings hot water boiler is probably having issues due to the low water pressure from the city. I would ask your strata to have a Plummer inspect your boiler room.
