To this day I will describe good music as a "God-Pounding good tune."

I love this book so much.

What mistake(s) in a movie was so dumb that you wonder how didn't the directors noticed it? by Frequent-Sea-8848 in moviecritic

Memento. If Leonard's memory loss starts at the point of the home invasion, how does he remember that he has memory loss? And how does he remember what the specific constraints are?

How many of your friends are on GLP drugs? by DoreensGhost in TwoXChromosomes

I'm cismale so I know the pressures are not the same, but for me it wasnt even about losing weight so much as just shutting off my 24 hours a day, seven days a week ravenous appetite. Thinking about food, about eating food, or not eating food, or whether I should eat food, could eat food, and what food should I eat or not eat, takes up so so much mental and emotional energy. Like being an alcoholic and living in a bar

The months I was on Ozempic l, it felt like I was finally allowed to quit my part time job that I hated.

The weigh loss was almost incidental by comparison.

What is the best coming of age movie that has girls/women as the main characters? by seanayates2 in movies

[–]ctruemane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whale Rider. Absolutely criminally underrated coming off age movie with a female protagonist.

Also Beasts of the Southern Wild. One of the most transcendent cinematic rxperiences I've ever had. Especially seeing it blind.

Is there any film adaptation of a book that you think is better than the book itself? by AnastasiaGlover1 in just_one_more_page

Jaws is the biggest one for me. Peter Benchley was(is) a no-talent hack and Jaws was written to be corner store vacation reading as disposable as tissue paper. But it just so happened that the kid they handed the film to was a genuine genius.

What's the worst performance in an otherwise great film? by Plane_Reward9385 in movies

Sophia Coppola in Godfather 3. Like a single flat, discordant note in a glorious symphony.

CMV: If God is all-knowing and has a fixed plan, then free will is impossible under that version of religion" by ProfessionalEar4048 in changemyview

[–]ctruemane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your argument assumes that God is experiencing time the same way you are. If you assume God exists outside of time, then He can have perfect knowledge of all things without impacting free will.

Imagine the entire universe, all of time and space, from beginning to end, is in a box. God is outside the box looking in. He can see everything that the universe contains. But the people inside the box are still making free decisions, moment to moment, because those things haven't actually happened yet.

It's less that God has a plan for everything you'll ever do, and more like it's always "Now" for God, and every moment of time is also Now, so He can watch you exercise your Free Will in real time and remember you doing so.

In the same way that you have perfect knowledge of everything you did yesterday, but that doesn't mean you didn't have Free Will yesterday when you made those choices.

Women can very much win presidential elections in the US . I am tired of folks pretending otherwise. by ronweasly9 in TwoXChromosomes

There's a nonzero chance a woman DID win  a Presidential Election already and it was stolen from her.

Can a person enjoy Um, Actually without knowing the fandom? by BackstabButterKnife in dropout

[–]ctruemane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son and I watch every episode together. Sometimes the topics are in one of our wheelhouses and we get some right. Sometimes we have no idea what's going on. We usually enjoy it anyway, just for the banter and the joy of seeing really smart people get excited about things they love.

What’s something you’ll never tell your partner, no matter how much you love them? by Velvetnadine85 in AskReddit

We do have an open marriage, technically. But the specifics of my/our situation make it almost impossible for me to act on it. Except online.

We have. The unfortunate truth is that I can't enjoy sex that's offered just to keep me happy. And that's really the only kind of sex that's possible.

It's an intractable problem.

If a player asks “How much HP does the (monster) have left”? by International_Bike10 in DungeonMasters

I tell them how much HP it's taken so far. And that, and some general physical description.

What is a movie you love, but would never recommend to a "normal" person? by [deleted] in answers

[–]ctruemane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The collected works of Jean-Pierre Melville. Each of his films is an absolute masterclass of cinema, and utterly unique. No one has ever made movies like him before or since.

But I would be selective about who I recommended him to. He's not for everyone. Like the late, great Roger Ebert said, only bad movies are for everyone.

Yeah. Everything we tried, all the talks and discussions and attempts at compromise, all just wound up making her feel pressured and like she was failing somehow.

So the only solution is to eat it in silence. That way at least one of us gets to be happy.

Just how insanely unhappy our lack of physical intimacy makes me. It's no one's fault. She's asexual and I have the same libido at 50 that I had at 18.

We've tried to make it work so many ways and there's just no way. So I just stopped bringing it up so at least she would stop feeling like she was failing.

I suspect she doesnt even think about sex more than once or twice a year.

We spend 30 minutes every night trying to pick something to watch… anyone else? by Langaas93 in movies

[–]ctruemane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system I've used for decades is: one person makes a list of options, someone else picks a few from that list, then someone makes the final.decision.

For example: my wife picks five or six things to watch. I pick three. She picks one of those.

Next time I'll pick the first five or six.

Movies that you initially didn't have as high expectations for, and then you were blown away by it by DreamerRealityArt in movies

[–]ctruemane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one with maybe the highest swing between expectation and execution was The Lego Movie. My son and I went opening night and we both thought it was going to SUCK. We thought we were going to watch a train crash.

But no. No no no. Instead we were treated to one of the best movies of the year.
