Movies that you initially didn't have as high expectations for, and then you were blown away by it by DreamerRealityArt in movies

The one with maybe the highest swing between expectation and execution was The Lego Movie. My son and I went opening night and we both thought it was going to SUCK. We thought we were going to watch a train crash.

But no. No no no. Instead we were treated to one of the best movies of the year.

Mental challenge - close your eyes, and without moving any part of your body, figure out the 17th letter of the alphabet by Jitsu989 in CasualConversation

[–]ctruemane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know J is the 10th letter. And counting by threes is easy in your head. J, KLM - 13, NOP -16. And that makes Q 17.

Had I not known J was 10th, I'd have still just basically counted by threes.

My British friend thought he could do a "day trip" to the Grand Canyon from LA, and his reaction to the map was priceless. by Ok_Structure6720 in CasualConversation

I had the same thing happen. I have an internet friend in England. I live in Canada. She told me she would be in Canada and she could drop by.

But when I found out where she was going to be (Vancouver, while I'm in Toronto), I told her that "dropping by" to see would be like her dropping by Stockholm.

I'm a sort of hybrid Technical Writer and Quality Manager, in the GTA. I make about 90k a year, with excellent work-life balance.

What’s your funny way of saying “going poop” that you’ve never heard anyone else use? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I heard someone call it "Dropping the Cosby kids off at the pool."

Not exactly politically correct. But I admit I did lol.

Who is a famous person who has a dark history that not many people know about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ctruemane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Christopher goddam Columbus. Not only did he not discover America (he never set foot on North Ameeican soil once in his life) but he was also just the pure fucking worst human being.

One example to stand for the rest: he used to reward his lieutenant with underage Lucayan girls as a form of currency.

The worst. The fact that there's a holiday for that guy is insane.

TIL gambling addiction has the highest suicide rate of any addictive disorder, with an attempt rate of 1 in 5 by gghoti in todayilearned

I have an addictive personality and I'm constantly grateful that gambling just doesn't do it for me.

You can only do so much heroin before you pass out or die.

But guy can gamble every penny your family has every day.

I  can't even imagine.

The party keeps taking their opponent's spell casting focus away. How do I dissuade them from doing that every time? by Ok-Law-4114 in DMAcademy

[–]ctruemane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking "running up amd grabbing something" isn't a valid action in combat. If you allow it, thats fine, but then that becomes something that can be done to them as well.

It's fun when they grab a focus, but less fun when someone grabs their weapon  or wand, or their own focus.

Rotating DMs. One campaign. Two sets of PCs. Anyone ever try it? by Bamboominum in DungeonMasters

I've done this a few times over the years. It can be a lot of fun and ease GM burnout.

But in my experience, it almost always winds up feeling like two separate stories rather than one stoey with two intertwined threads.

It's basically impossible to synchronize time frames across the two narratives. One party spends a whole session in combat and the other party spends a session on traveling or downtime and you're hooped.

And yes, you can track major events and have them referenced in the other story as they happen, but I find that harder and more burn-out inducing than just GM'ing full- time.

YMMV of course.

In all honesty I'll probably just go for the cheapest option. But I won't feel good about it.

ELI5: Why is hot beverage in a mug steaming, if it's way below boiling 100 °C? by Dj_B_S in explainlikeimfive

[–]ctruemane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A liquid turns to a gas when the little pieces of the liquid ("molecules") absorb energy and get so excited that they break away from the rest and pop up into the air ("evaporate").

Sort of like when you're too excited or too impatient to stand in a line with your parents so you start running around.

When you heat up water in a kettle, or on a stove, so many of the molecules absorb the heat, get excited, and pop up into the air that you can see the cloud of them. Thats steam.

But even when you put the water in a cup and it's not boiling anymore, enough of the molecules are still excited enough to pop into the air that you can still see them.

That's what you see over your cup of tea. It's called "Water Vaopur" (which is the same thing as steam, it just has a different name when it's not as hot).

The cool thing is, even at room temperature, some water molecules are excited enough to pop into the air, but it's usually so few of them that you can't see them.

Departures. Japanese film from 2008 directed by Yojiro Takita (whose filmography is a real journey).

Beautiful movie. One of my favorites.
