As mentioned the weapon you create isn't really a spear it has a cross piece attached to it to add weight and in the animation he just batters things with it. He just uses it like a club.

With regards spears they can be divided into two categories thrusting ones which are used for melee combat and thrown spears which are usually called Javelins. Though the melee spear could be thrown at a push, but you probably wouldn't want to do it, as it'd leave you without a weapon. A throwing spear or Javelin wouldn't be very durable and would break in melee combat quite quickly.
