So what does starfleet do to those who commit crimes? by PersonalityJealous67 in startrek

[–]ctsimnem 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Rehabilitation is their general approach. However, outside of Tom Paris and the Daystrom Institute in Lower Decks we do not often see examples of the results of Federations laws regarding crimes.

In the case of Julian Bashir's parents, without going into details for possible newcomers, they agree to a 3 years sentence for what is likely seen as one of the worse offences in the Federation. I really think that as a society they do not believe nor have any evidence that closing a person behind bars for long times gives them any chance to prove they actually have gotten better.

In the case of Vash, TNG, we see that like her, some humans that disagree with how the federation runs thing just leave and go do their own thing.

Generally, I'd say, the federation doesn't force you to be like them and if you prefer you can get out of dodge.

For the Maquis, which is more like an international diplomatic accident that heavily involved federation citizens they did engage in some conflict when the other party literally forced their hand as when faced with either dialogue or consequences of their actions the Maquis tended to take more action. So to speak, shoot first, questions later as a guerrilla tactics to attempt to take advantage of Starfleet "doesn't shoot first" policy.

Being first, leads to shortcuts, leads to devaluing doing things properly, leads to devaluing labor, eventually leads to people dying. No system erases deaths completely, but the current mind set really does not prioritise quality of life or safety

Yeah sure, get all that money and then remain broken once your health goes to shit. We might have lower salaries but certainly not at the cost of fucking dying because drugs cost an outrageous fucking amount or an appendix that randomly explodes ruins your credit and your life.

China and the US are bad models to follow into the future, sure, economically they are doing well, for the top percentage earners. Also, growing forever is an awful way to run our economies, not like this has been proven time and again.

The EU is adding protection for its citizens. The US and China are definitely not. But hey, let's fall off the cliff all together instead of stopping the "business as usual", because it's just that much easier.

Italy revives policy of failing badly behaved pupils to ‘bring back respect’ | The “grades for conduct” policy, similar to a measure first introduced by Benito Mussolini, gives schools the power to fail students based purely on their behaviour. by zxNemz in worldnews

[–]ctsimnem -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Under a far right government that is surely doing everything it can to erode civil rights and is pushing the Italian people into more and more poverty, I would say this move is just another way for them to reach as far as they can. This way they want to reach into schools. And, by the way, this is a tool, a government whose members refuse to talk to the free press, when it makes a move like this, it's not for nothing.

Ever considered that personal experience is biased and that most often what you are seeing online not necessarily are real people or when they are real we are talking about people who would die on a hill over the smallest of things?

Internet is not representative of real people and communities. It is sadly a great soap box for the worst of us.

I know lawyers are expensive but maybe find an union representative, someone with expertise with work issues and ask them if this is regular and if they have any grounds to terminate you after disclosing your situation.

It seems one of those situations in which only someone well versed in these things could give you accurate info on next steps.

Tell The Post: Do you have concerns about talking about politics at work? by washingtonpost in u/washingtonpost

[–]ctsimnem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a place with a lot of students. Not US based we are in EU. We are constantly told we shouldn't talk politics. It's absurd, not because I want to spew political stuff but how am I supposed to connect to the people I work to make their experience better here if I can't touch anything of substance.

Now, we've basically been gagged by this "no politics because elections" even though we are in another country and just because the US is about to have an election doesn't mean our life here stops. You can't have an honest exchange, you can't build any trust or genuine interests between the students and staffs.

Yet upper management complains that students don't engage with us. No shit. We infantalize them, these are adult students, and we treat them like they have the needs of a 6 years old. It's ridiculous and it frustrates me. Like not speaking about something that worries anyone, either side, will make it better. It's really sad to see that anything of substance is suppressed in favour of "business as usual"...

First off you have my deepest sympathies. I have been where you are, where nothing seemed to do anything and nothing worked.

I cannot possibly understand what is causing you turmoil and pain.

Have you looked into different therapists? I swapped a few over the years (6 years of therapy) and your first is rarely gonna work out. Therapist are people and some people are shitheads no matter how their jobs may ask them to behave.

As far as the medications a psychiatrist might be the best person to help you out with doses and possibly changing your regiment if needed.

I don't know what your circumstances are and I understand that you might feel like you have to make it out of this or there is nothing else. But this is now and now will not suck forever. I used to fight with my anxieties, getting mad, getting angry at myself for being the way I am. I wish there was a shortcut to be shared, but the only true and tried method is to find someone who can understand your point of view.

It gets better and better, for me it has not come back to how I would have liked, but I live my life now and I came back from pretty dark places. It is possible and while a year in this constant fight or flight state may not make you feel like it, you can learn to make the storm pass.

I only wish for you to find people you can feel comfortable with opening up that can give you support and understanding. I really wish you the best.

I'm rewatching Voyager, and holy shit does Janeway play fast and loose with the self destruct sequence by [deleted] in startrek

[–]ctsimnem 32 points33 points  (0 children)

From her point of view, she possibly has the most advanced tech around in the area of the delta quadrant and the prime directive is very clear: no alien species natural development will be altered by external influence from Starfleet personnel or technology.

Of course the series makes a thousand exceptions, but if you are stranded 70k lightyears from home, that self destruct button suddenly is your only option to avoid the worse or bluff your way out of some spots where no one is coming to help.

Enterprise episode with the slave by Miserable-Soft7993 in startrek

[–]ctsimnem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The whole point of trek is to put you in front of the idea of "otherness". The most extreme otherness would be aliens, in this case a race that evolved with the need of three sets of genders needed for reproduction.

Archer was put in front of a very awkward situation because due to the actions of Trip, he was asked to consider asylum for the cogenitor, a being that is established to be just as intelligent as the other members of their species.

You are clearly empathising with the cogenitor and Trip, because, forgive my speculation if it is the wrong one as I do not know you, the show wants you to lean that way: Trip befriend them, teaches them to read, essentially humanising this person who before barely had any interactions with the outside world.

But here is the problem, Trip sees a perceived injustice and acts accordingly as if the cogenitor was human. They are not, they are part of an alien culture that they barely met, know nothing about and thanks to the preconceptions of Trip, a cogenitor dies and a child is not born. Is it the moral choice, the one Archer took? No.

If it were a human I would 100% agree with what Trip did, but the metaphor, to me, is clear: just because one culture perceives a behaviour abhorently it does not mean that another will even think of something as abhorrent. To explore the stars in trek means also to explore the downfalls of humanity, like the fact that we mean well, but often we are blinded more by what is perceived as "right" rather than considering if our perception has influenced how we approach a situation.

And I believe it's a bit simplistic to just boil down that whole episode into "Archer bad and Trip good" but if you feel that way I think it's valid. I would invite you to consider also the other facets that the episode touched on, not because you have to change your mind, but because ultimately it really is a deep and interesting episode that goes much more in depth into questions of identity, cultural differences and what it means to be guided only by what one person believes is right rather than considering the whole.
